The Tea Party's Light has gone out?

The popularity of the tea party movement among the US public is slumping to a new low.

That's the message of a new CNN/Opinion Research poll that asked whether Americans have a favorable opinion of various people and groups.

When it came to "the tea party movement," known for its hard line on federal spending and deficits, only 31 percent of respondents said they have a favorable view. That's down from 37 percent in mid-July, and the lowest level since the CNN poll began asking the question in January 2010.

Fifty-one percent of Americans said their view of the tea party is unfavorable, the most ever and the first time a majority of Americans have held that view in the survey. The poll was taken last weekend, Aug. 5 to Aug. 7.

The lights haven't gone out, but it is slumping. It's slumping, in my opinion, for 3 major reasons:

    1. The elected officials who claim tea party status and representation do not show a high level of intelligence, competence, or political acumen. They look like angry, distracted children, who refuse to focus on the real issues this country faces. They would rather spend time giving speeches to convince you that Obama is a socialist, than give speeches that outline how they would approach the unemployment crisis.

    2. The slogan of the tea party has been fiscal responsibility in government, but their political actions have focused on more wedge issues like busting unions, making state laws more restrictive on women's reproductive rights, voter suppression laws, and a host of other issues that work in conflict with fiscal responsibility (drug testing for welfare recipients, anyone?).

    3. The religious zealotry of a few is overshadowing any economic message the group tries to bring to light. Many people outside the tea party see them as more of a group of cultural and religious warriors bent on moving this country towards a fundamentalist christian nation, rather than a fiscally responsible one. If the tea party wants to survive (and thrive) it will need to turn this message around, instead of letting the most extreme 15% of their base control the message and the conversation.

I think it all began when the candidates supported by the Tea Party entered Congress and did not produce solutions for serious problems of unemployment, etc. Considering the type of people who joined the Tea Party, I suspect they'll continue barking loudly. But the drop in popularity shows bully tactics become tiresome, after a while.

Technically, the poll would consist of MORE then just progressives so you can't blame this one on them. Regardless of the 'calm before the storm' majority of Americans are still going to find them unfavorable..

    Here is an update
A latest Gallup poll revealed that the Tea Party has lost popularity and mainstream support since its candidates took office in January. The poll revealed that around 50% (half) of all U.S. citizens have unfavorable take on the Tea Party in comparison to a 3rd portion of the population that holds positive observation about the party.
It should be noted that the opinion of Americans on the Tea Party had been noted for less or more steadiness. In March 2010, the Gallup poll showed 41% people disapproving the Tea Party while 38% approving it. The unfavorable view about the Tea Party has made a huge jump, growing to 47% in the last 3 months.
The results revealed by the Gallup poll are in tune with what the poll respondents hold about Republicans. The same poll shows that around 47% people also hold bad view of Republicans.
