The Signers of Declaration of Independence Paid the Price of Freedom With Personal and Financial Sacrifice!

Steverno~POTL~PWCM~JLA 2012/07/04 05:15:20

Two-hundred-and-thirty-six years after members of the Second Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence, Americans will celebrate the nation’s birth on July 4 with barbecues and fireworks.

But the document that declared independence for the 13 American colonies from the tyranny of England’s King George III, signed by 56 men, was considered an act a treason by the crown and punishable by hanging. And the price for securing freedom for the newly minted republic required personal and financial sacrifice.

“For their dedication to the cause of independence, the signers risked loss of fortune, imprisonment, and death for treason,” states the biographies of the signers posted on the National Park Service website.

“Although none died directly at the hands of the British, the wife of one, Mrs. Francis Lewis, succumbed as a result of harsh prison treatment,” the websites says. “About one-third of the group served as militia officers, most seeing wartime action. Four of these men (Thomas Heyward, Jr. (South Carolina), Arthur Middleton (South Carolina), Edward Rutledge (South Carolina), and George Walton (Georgia), as well as Richard Stockton, were taken captive.”

“The homes of nearly one-third of the signers were destroyed or damaged, and the families of a few were scattered when the British pillaged or confiscated their estates,” the National Park Service site states.

The men – chosen to represent their states at the Continental Congress because of their achievements and positions – were lawyers, doctors, merchants, farmers and politicians. They ranged in education from being graduates of Harvard and Princeton to self-taught and one – George Taylor of Pennsylvania – arrived in this country as an indentured servant, according to the Park Service.

The signers ranged in age from 26 (Edward Rutledge of South Carolina) to 70 (Benjamin Franklin), but the bulk were in their 30s or 40s, the Park Service biographies state.

“Except for Charles Carroll (Maryland), a Roman Catholic, and a few Deists, every one subscribed to Protestantism,” the website says.

Two of the signers went on to be president of the United States -- Thomas Jefferson and John Adams -- and two others, Samuel Chase and James Wilson, served on the Supreme Court. Others served in Congress, as governors and diplomats.

Perhaps the final words on the Declaration itself provide the most succinct description of the courageous men who gave much more than a signature to secure the future of the country:

“And for the support of this Declaration with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”

What I want to know is that IF there is a price for freedom, who collects that price, and how are they entitled to collect it? It's especially serious if one must give one's life for liberty, then what's the point? Once one is dead, how will freedom be of value then?

The founding fathers knew what was likely to happen if we gave liberals their head, but did we listen?...No, we did not.

Thanks, because this 4th of July America's People need be reminded where we came from, and what the cost was. They need be reminded that it was never free, and thats why we are losing our freedom because we want want want, well our wanting personalities have bought us free health care, and a host of liars that want to destruct the very freedoms they worked and fought to defend. The blood of your ancestors bought us our freedom and it might just be the blood of your loved ones that pay to take it back, unless you learn its meaning and learn it soon, you may be forced to take part in the Next American Revolution. I am not advocating violence, but as one of the founders quoted "the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of the patriots and the tyrants, and that tree is withered and bare, frighteningly so, we may have to feed the thirst for blood to protect our liberties which are also our natural birth rights as human beings, some human beings get these rights when they are born, some seek them by coming to our country. Let us represent our natural rights, and why we are the best country in the world. Lets keep America great! When you celebrate today remember that "Freedom is not Free!"

The enemy within is the worst kind of enemy! It can turn into your mother, your brother, your sister, your brother-in-law etc. We are on our way to a civil war. You either comply or you might die. "We conservatives shall never comply and that is what our forefathers expected from Us!"

George Clymer, of whom I am a descendant, was one of those who placed their lives and fortunes on the line. I am indebted to him and all his fellow patriots who were so unselfish. They set in motion the possibility that ALL men might be free. The forces of slavery are rallying again. Do WE possess the same resolve, commitment and self sacrifice as they did?!

The Declaration is personally, my favorite piece of American History. Who would have thought a Declaration of War could be so poetic. They set the bar pretty high with those principles. And Americans failed them even given we were forewarned... a shame.

Unfortunately today, those individuals responsible for upholding the Declaration have construed its authority to strip Americans of the very liberties such granted. They further exempt themselves from their own freedom quashing legislation imposed on citizens and use their authority for personal financial gain sacrificing nil.

Our Founders wanted this country to be about individual responsibility and feared that the government they founded would become a massive intrusive government. This Country was founded on the believe of individual responsibility with minimal government interference on liberty and freedom. Liberals as well as some conservative have become the enemy to the Founders idea's, make no mistake the enemy is within and we must take back this country and make it what the founders wanted, a Country based on Individual liberty and Freedom and responsibility.

We have become a nation of lazy cry babies. Too many expect the Government to feed, cloth and house them. Then to have the nerve to say someone should pay more so they can get more is outrageous. Time for a Constitutional Convention so we can fix the mess progressives have made.

The Declaration of Independence will be the legal basis for all 50 States to Dissolve this Federal Government and form a New one. Spend your efforts winning your State Legislators and Governors. If you have elected States Attorney Generals they must be won also. Top priority. Forget the Federal Government all three branches are seriously corrupted. Happy Independence Day!

I haven't had the time to get my arms around this yet, but just briefly reading it I agree.

    I like your points

The problem stems from a basic breach of principle:
RIGHTS: Artificial non-living Entities such as governments, organizations, corporations, etc. can neither claim to own nor have any rightful power to negate or detract from those Natural Rights of any Man. This one principle does, in itself, refute the entire justification for EVER AGAIN creating a Government of Force.

    .
The KEY missing element from our present Constitution was banning Government Force. If we fail to include that ban in very absolute terms, do we not doom the citizens to more of the same old thing?
