The Right-Wing’s Favorite New Conspiracy: The U.N. Is After Your Guns

ProudProgressive 2012/07/10 20:14:09

Another day, another vast conspiracy theory from the empty heads on the Right Wing. Today's episode - back to the "Obama Wants To Take Everyone's Guns Away" nonsense, with a dash of "New World Order" thrown in for good measure. Never mind that President Obama has not made a single proposal that would in any way restrict the rights of gun owners, they KNOW that he really wants to take everyone's guns away.

How pathetic can the Right Wing get?

The Right-Wing’s Favorite New Conspiracy: The U.N. Is After Your Guns
By Zack Beauchamp
Jul 10, 2012

Call it the conspiracy theory that won’t die. The U.N. has been working for years to produce a final text of the Arms Trade Treaty, an agreement to regulate the global arms trade (right now, international banana and bottled water sales are more restricted than weapons sales). The negotiations have just restarted and, with them, a massive round of panic on the right about the U.N.’s nefarious plan to undermine the Second Amendment. The NRA frets that “global gun banners have markedly stepped up their attack on our Second Amendment freedoms.” Roughly 130 Congresspeople speculated that “the ATT is likely to pose significant threats to…our constitutional rights.” The Washington Times led an editorial with the screaming headline “The U.N. is coming for your guns.” There’s just one problem with this narrative: it’s totally made up:

The Obama Administration required language in the initial 2009 General Assembly resolution acknowledging “national constitutional protections on private ownership, exclusively within their territory.”

The State Department rules out provisions restricting constitutional rights and sovereign control of domestic weapons regulation in its ATT “Red Lines.”

Since the Supreme Court has held that individual gun ownership is constitutionally protected, and international law cannot override the Constitution, the U.N. could not take American guns even if the Administration and Senate wanted it to.

As Naval Postgraduate School arms expert Diana Wueger points out, the ATT isn’t even intended to regulate domestic arms: “The Arms Trade Treaty will not regulate domestic sales of firearms. Its focus is instead on the control of the legal, international trade in conventional weapons.”

Conspirators seize on a recently leaked U.N. paper’s suggestion that “arms trade must therefore be regulated in ways that would…minimize the risk of misuse of legally owned weapons.” Even setting aside the ambiguity of the line in question, the paper (inaccurately portrayed as part of a press kit) is playing no role in the negotiations over the text of the ATT. ThinkProgress confirmed this with U.N. Office for Disarmament Affairs Information Officer Ewan Buchanan, who said “The negotiation is being done by the member states of the U.N., not by the Secretariat. It was an information paper that does not form any part of the negotiation process and the member states of the U.N. don’t have it.”

While the NRA and its allies scream about UN plots, the global arms trade continues to kill people in conflict zones around the world.

Yep, they're idiots on an organized scale.

No matter how many facts are put before them, they'll still believe that Obama is coming for their guns.

Since 2008 Obama has made no efforts to take away our guns. Even Clinton was thought to do the same thing when he was in office. The old saying goes when a Dem is in office gun sales profit, when a Repub is in office guns sales plummet.

And yet so far we still have the second amendment and still have rights in many states to allow gun ownership. Just look at other places where laws banning guns have drastically changed their countries crimes and even our leaders know we would not put up with this.

These Tea Party kooks are really out of control. First it's the crazy birther thing, then it's the Fast and Furious. they hold Holder in contempt when they don't even do a real investigation. They say Obama started Fast and Furious, to take guns away from everyone. Now it's this conspacy by the U.N. I don't see how any rational person could vote for these facist radicals.

Maybe all just conspiracy theory, maybe not. Gun right activists, the NRA, do stay on top of the issue speculating about anything they think could be a threat. I think Obama would if he could go after gun owners, but I think it's a fight he chooses not to get into with so many other issues without pissing off too many voters. The UN would gladly restrict gun owner rights around the world if they could. NRA and 2nd amendment rights activists have established a name for themselves as very tough advocators; jumping on anything they think the slightest threat is strategy that works for them.

This silly story has been circulating from time to time for decades. The NRA can create only so many suspicious villains before running out of names. They have overlooked the conspiracy of the Barbers and Beauticians Union to confiscate the guns of all customers.

Romney's record on gun control should worry the rethuglicans more - depending on who he is talking to his stand on gun ownership changes pretty regularly.

LOL I was involved in politics before you were born, sonny. The ATT is being discussed now, not 30 years ago. And while the NRA has been paranoid about liberals plotting to take everyone's guns away since you were in diapers they, like every other Right Wing extremist group in America, have multiplied their paranoid rhetoric by a factor of a thousand ever since they first heard the name "Barack Obama".

I would like to know what Obama wanted passed concerning guns so far in his presidency. Better yet what have the dems tried to pass so far in Obama's first 3 1/2 years concerning guns. Nothing I heard of. But if you can't win on truth lie lie and lie some more. Use fear on conservatives. It'll work every time.

Thus far the only piece of legislation which the President has either proposed or signed during his entire term which had anything to do with the rights of gun owners was a bill which EXPANDED the rights of gun owners to include all of our National Parks, so that now the gun nuts can happily bring their AK-47s with them to Yellowstone National Park in case Yogi and Boo Boo decide to go after a pik-a-nik basket.

I had to put up with some lunatic today, claimed Soros was responsible the collapse of the Greek economy and it's only matter of time before the Cubans install Communism in America. The best one is that you have to pay a $750 fine for not having health insurance or go to jail. The A$$hole really believes this nonsense.

The funny (well, sad, actually) thing is that the Greek economy collapse was more the fault of Goldman Sachs than anyone else. They helped the Greek government hide a ton of debt so they could qualify for the EU when they weren't nearly stable enough to do so. Goldman Sachs got richer, of course, but we can see every day the damage they've done to an entire continent.

Read the treaty. If you can find anything in it that restricts your right to own guns other than the very narrow items I mentioned above, please post them.

Politifact rates the Right Wing claims about the treaty as "false":

It's got to do with the sale and availability of small arms as well as larger weapons around the globe. US allows its citizens more rights in sale and ownership than many other countries, the UN would gladly close that market.

I have read the treaty. That's why I posted this. The "Obama wants to take everyone's guns away" nutjobs have been saying that since before he was elected, and he hasn't done a single thing that in any way affects the rights of any gun owner in America in a negative way. The treaty does not in any way compromise American sovereignty and in no way does anything to take a single gun away anywhere in this country. The only effect the treaty has in this country is (a) a very small number of high end assault weapons that the average George Zimmerman isn't going to buy are not going to be imported into this country in as large a volume as before, and (b) some gun registration and licensing information may be made available to international law enforcement agencies when relevant.

The Right Wing's fearmongering over this treaty is almost like complaining about an international agreement not to let private citizens own nuclear weapons. (Although the NRA would probably protest that anyway).

First of all we should have no treaty with the UN about anything that goes on in America. The UN is one of the most corrupt organizations on this earth. The UN's treaty will not keep the guns out of criminals hands so who is it really for?

The League of Nations is similar to the United Nations in some ways. For one, it did not include most of the nations (including the US) that are in the UN now. Also, it had a different way of handling things. The members of the League signed a pact that they would not attack eachother and would beat down anyone who started up a war. The UN takes a less violant approach. And does not make such bold promises to attack anyone who falls under certain catagorys.
In the United Nations, the member countries make no promises to defend eachother when under attack and each member state has much more freedom than members of the League do. The UN acts mainly as a forum to set up peace talks between countries and to avoid conflict. As well as organizing where funds go (similar to the WTO). It also provides Peacekeepers for areas who have seen disasters or attacks.
The UN is much more than the League ever was and gives member nations more freedoms than the League.
I am positive I didnt hit all the differences but those were a few major ones.
