The REAL Reason Conservatives Are Ruining The Country: Star Trek!

Great Montgomery Scott! I've figured it out! Ever since I started paying attention to politics, I've been trying to answer one single question: Why do conservatives want to make things worse? And the answer is: Star Trek. No, seriously! Right now, it's blatantly obvious they are trying to make the United States a worse place to live. Just take a look at what they've been fighting for just these last three years:
Roll back the EPA – Because who wouldn't want to suck down more pollution from large factories?
Roll back the FDA – What's a little extra ground glass and rat shit in your babies' strained carrots between friends?
Invade Iran – Why the hell not? Sounds like a blast!
End Medicare – Screw old people! If they're so interested in living longer, let them pay for it themselves!
End Social Security – Screw old people! If they're so interested in not living on the streets, let them pay for it themselves!
End Medicaid – We're only pro-life until that baby is born. After that, we don't want to have to pay for it if you're poor.
Privatize public education – Edukashun shuld onlee before peeple width munny!
Expand the military – Why? So we can keep the eternal war going on Oceania. Or Eastasia. Orwell would be so proud…
Let the 1% get richer – It's been over thirty years. That trickle down has to start sooner or later!
Let the 99% get poorer – And then blame them for not being rich!
Put religion BACK into government – Because that worked out so well in the Dark Ages and speaking of the Dark Ages…
Honestly, this list could go on forever. Page upon page of things the Right wants to get rid of that have measurably improved our lives or things they want to do that cannot conceivably make things better, only worse.
So what is it? What are they after? I have come to the conclusion that conservatives hate Star Trek or, rather, the future that Star Trek represents.
I don't mean the change or progress shown in Star Trek, although they certainly hate those as well. I mean the actual future, 100, 200, 500 years from now. Conservatives absolutely hate the entire concept of the future. Specifically, everyone else's future.
It's an extension of the "steak rule" as laid out by the Fat Smug Bastard:
"A conservative cannot enjoy their steak unless they know that someone, somewhere cannot have a steak of their own."
I've simply carried it to its logical conclusion and it explains a lot! Take a look at history. There has been a slow (very slow) upwards progression from ancient times until now. Technology improves. People live longer lives. Civilization expands and cultures mature. The biggest reversal of this progression? Religious conservatives in the Dark Ages. What happened after they lost power? We made up for a whole lot of lost time. 1000 years of misery and 500 years or so later, we're on the moon!
So what's the problem? Well, today's conservatives cannot stand the idea that someone else could have a better life at what they perceive to be their expense. It's the underlying philosophy of everything they do these days. From the attack on Planned Parenthood and contraception to the decades long assault on science and progress in general, conservatives do not want to share the fruits of "their" labor.
What could be more offensive to a conservatives' worldview than a future built on their accomplishments?! Why should these future people have a better life than modern day conservatives?! Why should they get the flying cars and cure for cancer? Why should they get the clean energy and benefits of stem cell research? Why should they get to have sex with gorgeous green aliens when Rick Santorum says we shouldn't even enjoy what little sex we DO have? Those damn lazy future people didn't have to work their asses off like REAL Americans! They're a bunch of moochers and they don't deserve a damn thing!
So, to avoid this horrible fate of being exploited by lazy future people, today's conservatives have resolved to use up everything they can and leave nothing for the next generation. If they want their damn paradise, they can pull themselves up by the bootstraps out of the burnt-out husk they were left with! Let's see those bums explore strange new worlds now!

Nice exposition, sir.
I don't know about American Progressives but for me it means wanting progression aka moving forward, looking to the future.
I don't know how accurate your assessment is but it's very well written and thought out
christianity and right wing fear go hand in hand.
Republicans want to make Medicare and Social Security solvent for future generations. They don't remotely want to take it away. They're lying.
Republicans want sensible regulations and oversight that allow business to flourish while protecting people AND without using the power of government as an ideological tool.
Republicans want everyone to earn more and to grow a better life. They don't want to punish anyone for striving and achieving what they can.
They want to maintain the security we have as a deterrent. As Teddy Roosevelt said, talk softly and carry a big stick.
And they want to maintain the protections of the Founders given in the First Amendment - to keep government from abusing religion.
As usual - lies from the left. Why would you post lies like this PP?
The Republicans have made no secret of their desire to eliminate social security and medicare entirely and replace it with some nonsensical "voucher" scam that would result in no one over 65 without a hedge fund could even buy an aspirin.
Republicans have removed every sensible financial regulation this country ever had, and the disaster they turned our economy into is the result. The Republicans repealed Glass-Steagall, which turned the American banking system into Las Vegas casinos in which the house collects every time you win, but you are out of luck every time you don't.
And the conservatives have never viewed government as anything BUT an ideological tool. That's why they seek to use government to control every uterus in the United States. That's why they take a sincere and dedicated college student and call her a prostitute and a slut because she has friends who have nearly died from a lack of access to the medicine they need. That's why they constantly pass these ludicrous anti-Sharia laws to demonize anyone who doesn't share their religious extremism.
Republicans only want the 1% to earn more and grow a better life. If you actually work for a living, or even God forbid join with you...

Republicans only want the 1% to earn more and grow a better life. If you actually work for a living, or even God forbid join with your fellow workers to try to get reasonable labor conditions, you're a "thug" or just a bum who doesn't want to work but just wants to sit at home and collect welfare checks.
As for security, this nation is a hell of a lot safer today than we were under the Bush Administration. This administration views national security as a means of keeping us safe. THe previous administration viewed national security as a means of infringing on the individual rights of American citizens and manipulating public fears for political gain with nonsensical color coded charts. Not to mention spending seven years doing everything possible to assure that the world's number one terrorist would never be captured.
And the only "protections of the Founders" that the conservatives want to support are (a) the right to treat anyone different from themselves as slaves and (b) the right to shoot anyone they want to any time they want to for any reason they want to.
I don't post lies. I post reality. You would do well to start doing the same.
- Republicans have all pledged the the SS and Medicare programs would be protected in the form they are now for people older than a certain age. Thats never in doubt. So the usual left wing claims that they are going after "grandma and grandpa" is BS - an outright lie PP. They see an issue on the horizon of insolvency for those programs and are looking for a number of ways to repair or reorganize them. Vouchers have only been one suggestion among many. The point is that Republicans see the problem and want to fix it before it becomes a national issue. Liberals play politics with it and will not put forth any suggestions to fix it - which may mean that they are responsible for future cuts in programs down the line.
- Liberals had their hands in both deregulation and regulation that is more harmful than helpful. I have firsthand experience with accusatory and counterproductive regulations on both a state and federal level in my line of work. - Liberals had their hands in both deregulation and regulation that is more harmful than helpful. I have firsthand experience with accusatory and counterproductive regulations on both a state and federal level in my line of work. There are plenty of Republicans who do believe in sensible regulation that would keep businesses in check but also allow them to expand and grow. The situation we have now kills business.
- The discussion on abortion is, as usual, where people show if they are strictly ideological or if they are sensible. If you are strictly ideological then you will attempt to define it only in your terms - pro-choice people as murders and in your liberal case that people want to "control" women and their uterus. Thats a completely incorrect assessment of the motivation of the pro-life movement. Their motivation is life. They believe a life begins at conception and that that separate individual life should be protected on its own. In effect they are attempting to protect the entire body of a human from being threatened by an outside source. Now maybe you disagree and thats fine. But you can at least be intelligent enough to start understanding the other side and define it properly. Fear mongering that the issue is about men trying to control women is cheap and tacky, just as cheap and tacky as protestors that hold up signs of dead babies and call women murders. And I'm sorry but I missed where the entire GOP called someone a slut. One rabid and irrelevent guy with a mic said that. And because she was called a slut, again tacky, doesn't make her point of view valid or correct btw. Its still proper to disagree with her on principle - which I do.
- The comment about the 1% getting rich is laughable because its so cliche. Fact is that the GOP wants everyone to elevate economically. They want everyone that wants to achieve to have the abilitiy to do so, a better standard of living across the board. That includes low class, middle class and upper class. The problem liberals seem to have is that the GOP doesn't want to punish the upper class. Since they don't go along with punitive tax rates to filter money into the fed so it can be passed back along in government programs then you get the new shiny tag of "only" supporting the 1%. Its bull as usual, spin.
- The nation was plenty safe under Bush. I like how you complain about Bushs tactics while Obama has kept a lot of them in place. Patriot Act is still around. I'm pretty sure if Obama thought that was a violation of American rights that he could use the "bully pulpit" Presidents enjoy to push a repeal. Hasn't happened. So thats empty rhetoric on your part. There was no fear mongering. There was a revelation that a problem growing for decades actually has an effect on US citizens. Thats how these things work. And while the color coded charts were goofy and useless, there was nothing sinister about them. Obama has done some good. He did what Bush wasn't willing to do and insert our forces into another nation to take out Bin Laden. Bush weighed the risk of Pakistani backlash and the potential of a third front to heavy. Obama also withdrew us from Iraq in a similar fashion that a President McCain would have, sensibly and not quickly. But he has involved us in areas that one would think liberals would not have us in. And even now our relationship with Russia has deteriorated in the wake of Putins election and his anti-American rhetoric leading up to that election. I would say we're roughly on the same footing we were when Bush left.
I'm going to leave the slavery remark aside because I usually think you're better than that sort of rhetoric - certainly smarter than that - so I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you were just emotional when you made that suggestion. If not I'd be embarassed for you.
You don't post lies you say. Well, you don't post facts either. At best you post cliche fearmongering rhetoric and spin. But I can certainly see that your words have the potential for lies as you should be smart enough to know better about the opposition.
No one knows how the divorce records were leaked.
http://www.chicagotribune.com...
And it's funny you should bring up the 2004 campaign.
Controversially, in 2004, Ryan had Justin Warfel (a campaign worker) follow his opponent, Barack Obama, throughout the day and record everything he did in public on videotape. The tactic backfired when Barack Obama and others, including Ryan's supporters, criticized this activity. Ryan's spokesman apologized, and promised that Warfel would give Obama more space. Obama said he was satisfied with Ryan's decision to have Warfel back off.
But if you really do believe that it's inappropriate for people to be digging into the confidential past records of a political candidate, would you PLEASE tell that to the other birthers?
"A California judge said Monday that sealed court records relating to Illinois U.S. Senate candidate Jack Ryan's divorce should be made public to show "there is no favoritism to the rich and the powerful."
