One of the biggest reasons the cost of health care in this nation has skyrocketed, and made the United States by far the most expensive industrialized nation in which to get health care, is corporate greed. Unlike every other country, which have outlawed the very concept of a for-profit primary care system, the American health care industry has been based on a fatally flawed model from the start - they are an industry which can only make a profit by denying its customers the very thing that they pay the industry for. By denying coverage, the industry profits.

The Health Care Reform Law does not solve the problem. But it does force the industry to change their m.o. and actually spend most of their money on the service they are supposed to provide, and that is a very, very good thing. This year alone the American public will receive more than a billion dollars in rebates because of this provision.

exactly right. the real genius of the aca was the option to develop an in state system that's better than the aca. along with the percentage requirement, it is designed to bring us incrementally, into a universal single payer healthcare system. the stateS begin having the right to start their own healthcare systems in 2014, and the will signal the end of for profit health insurance as we have today. and GOOD RIDDANCE.

Pure economic naiveté. Price competition is a constraint on premiums.

One of the correlations employers discovered more than 3 decades ago, was the better the coverage they provided, the 'sicker' their employees got. This behavior has been applying constant upward pressure on the cost of medical services, and the rise in premiums. Over the last decade there has been increased pressure by employers to pass these increases along to the employees.

As costs go up, there WILL be rationing of health care. Either price will lower demand, or regulatory rationing will control the supply. Take your pick.

For every dollar you send to Washington, administrative costs absorb more than half. What actually gets to the patient in the form of care is a mere fraction of the cost.

In spite of all the government's claims, they cannot nor have they the incentive to spend your money better than you. The only good riddance you are assured is the riddance of your disposable income.

The bottom line is when insurer's are making huge amounts of money by cutting peoples insurance off once they NEED that insurance so that their CEO's can get bonus's thats just plain BS. Hopefully this will bring insurance back where its priorities lie. That is with US and not with bonus's.

The missing time bomb is to the US deficit and quality of care. So you think government can do it better--WHAT HAS GOVERNMENT EVER DONE BETTER< CHEAPER< OR MORE EFFICIENTLY. What a joke! The GAO has already before this damn obamcare starts says it will cost double what the liars obama, pelosi and reid said it would. After full implementation it will probably be more like quadruple the deficit. So we move quicker ti insolvency and quicker to rationed care, poor quality, death panels and so on! I will be the first to say we need reform badly but the first place to start is cutting cost like Peru. Peru has excellent government regulated health care and the cost for all is reasonable!

Medicare adminstrative overhead is about 3 percent. Private insurance is around 20 percent, when you include shareholder profits as overhead.

The US government won WW-II and the cold war, created the internet, and got us to the moon. And try sending a letter by FedEx for 47 cents.
  • Don Leuty Steve 2012/07/05 04:19:04
    Don Leuty
That is a gross error. Only about 47% of every dollar makes it to its intended purpose, irregardless of the program. As the Civil Service roster begins to well, that component will shrink, not improve. YOU are the US Government. The US Government did not create the internet, our allies across the pond hold that distinction. Your tax dollars supported its expansion.

Even your 47-cent letter is a sham. Operating without a budget tends to camouflage a number of things. If you look just below the radar, you will find your tax dollars are propping up that price. Postal bailout funding added to that 47-cents considerably change the true cost.

Your taxes are supporting the premium services as well. The three percent overhead may be the departmental charge, but the cost of getting that dollar to medicare still must be paid by you, the taxpayer... unless of course, you don't pay taxes, as most of us do.

Completely false. Medicare does run on 3 percent overhead.

The postal service is self-funding. It's actually subsidizing other government retirement funds at the moment.

And the internet started as ARPANET, created by the Defense Dept.

Vaticancare not Obamacare... proven fact our government from President on down are working for the Vatican. We have 6 Catholics and 3 Jews on Supreme Court, so is gun laws next? Everything that they are pushing in this country is what the Pope wants for the World and his One World Order. Our government has been taken over with them even our judges and other politicians, whose last resort is to do the will of the Papacy.

National Healthcare, Earth Warming, Illegal aliens Dream Act who are over running this country and others, open borders, World Unions, Wanting all countries to come under U.N. authority, Worldwide wealth distribution, why you are seeing jobs leaving the U.S., so we will become equal to the other World Unions, which will change to a One World Order with he Pope ruling the world from Jerusalem. Who made the U.S. the policeman of the world, one guess.

The Pope told Western Europe to come unite under their Christian heritage and go over to Socialism, which Fascism was the pet of the Pope which started WW2, and this Social Reform or Justice was started by them in the 1800's, and that is all you hear about today.

This is just a drop in the bucket to what is really going on not only here but in the whole world at this time.

Taiwan has demonstrated that government health care can be successful and efficient. This particular provision involves the government stepping into the private sector without solving the real problem: the ability to market health care plans across state lines. This from the same crowd arguing it has the right to regulate interstate commerce! Bottom line for me is, 1) I don't want anyone or anything to come between me and my doctor; and 2) a plan that creates a dozen new taxes and over 100 new federal agencies cannot possibly hope to be efficient in the long run.

I am no more trusting of or a fan of the insurance companies than I am of Washington Mutual, B of A, Chase, Wachovia, etc..

Crooked organizations who are in business (or were) solely to screw over the people.

    Why should I trust them?

Agreed. I think they and credit card companies are nothing more than legalized scams, providing an unncessary product at exhorbitant rates. Obama has already done good work to rein the credit card companies in... hopefully this is the necessary first step for private health insurers and leads to universal health care.
