I get 250 minutes a month myself. It is a life saver since I AM DISABLED and not able to work. I'm thankful for this. I use it for talking to my doctors mainly and an occasional short chat with family members in the state I'm originally from.

And yes they are free minutes I don't have to pay for. Because of the fact I can't work. Whoever doesn't like it can get over it.

u people must not know how to read. how many times have people told u and showed u that it is not funded by the gov. so relax no one is stealing money out of ur pocket to pay for a cell phone with 68 minutes on it.ever try to call a dr. and ur put on hold how many minutes are eaten up? there are no more pay phones where i live. and i am putting my self through school and am a single parent that may need to get a call from the school about my child.or have to call emergency care for someone. lets see u live with 68 minutes.i have no money for a cell phone they cost too much and they are called SAFELINK safety!!!! as for a drug dealer they can afford a better phone than you. and once again NO money is coming out of ur pocket. god forbid u ever find yourself down and out and havent a phone to give a potential employer a number u can kiss that job good by.how can one without a job get one to better themselves without a phone, or that u are in need in any way. not everyone is as fortunate as u r Ed. let the poor stay poor right? turn ur back on ur mankind? and once again since u still dnt get it it is not funded by the gov. non of ur precious money goes to the phone that helps many. i know this was talked about along time ago but i got fired up and had to say a few things

you Americans are nuts. Has it ever occurred to any of you that by being conned into cutting each others throats every day in some social-darwinian competitive dystopia, you're sending your country down the gurgler, and American global hegemony into the garbage bin of history.

Surely more people able to use phones is good for business, and isn't it supposed to be that what's good for business is good for America? Does the US military operate on a user-pays basis? Don't your taxes pay for, among other things, the imprisonment of 2% of the men in the US, with much of that money going to private corporations with a vested interest in ever greater levels of imprisonment, and who, going along with the general tenor of corporate operations in the states, elevate the non-payment of taxes to the level of a guiding principal, shifting that burden onto you. The rich seceded from the US 20 years ago, now they're only citizens when they need your help. That's something to complain about.

Besides, giving $2 trillion of public funds to bank shareholders is not socialism. You'd be better off with an Obama who, in some parallel universe, was a socialist.

i am not sure when a cell phone became a right. i jokingly told my husband next they will be giving out dog food stamp cards for those who can not afford a dog but deserve to have one

It's for people that can't afford a land line or a cell phone that has health problems that keeps them from working so they can be in contact with Doctors and Doctors can be in contact with them. I wish people like you would come down with half the health problems I have so you will see and feel what it is like to be struggling on a daily basis not to die!!!!

First and formost this program was passed in congress back in September 2008 before Obama was even elected. Not Sept 2009 as you suggest. The safelink phones have nothing to do with Obama. They are provided by tracfone and have been around before Obama was even in office. People are mislabeling the safellink product for something it is not. People need to get their facts straight.

Safelink "wireless" is new, not the same program from Ronald Reagan era to be used for emergency by the elderly and disabled to be able to dial 911 etc.

From what i understand, the program is funded by Telecom fees. I believe it is one of the cell phone fees we pay, but am not 100% sure. I know for a fact, it was started prior to Obama even being elected and is NOT funded by tax dollars. Its a pretty basic program that has great benefits. I mean, it helps individuals who cannot afford cellular devices to own a phone for emergencies and the such. I think its a great program with a lot of potential of doing good. Definitely check it out. I am doing reseasrch on it for a project for school so I am learning as I go.
