The National Debt is whose fault?

periscope 2010/05/03 12:45:06
I know the Tea-baggers and other misinformed miscreants want to blame Obama for everything from the Crash of 2008 to the rising U.S. debt, even though he inherited an avalanche of debt that was falling due to his predecessor, including a $1 trillion annual deficit, and although Bushboy bailed out Wall St. and the bankers with $700 billion, when Obama got the same amount to bailout working Americans - you know, the victims of Wall St. and big bank greed - the right-wing hypocritcally screamed about "rising debt."
For those who really want to know who created the monstrous U.S. debt, all they have to do is go to zfacts.com and look at the historic national debt curve. If after looking at the curve, you still want to vote Republican, there's a bridge in Brooklyn I want to sell you.
You!

So how did Obama vote as a Senator on TARP? Did he argue against it or was he in support of it?

Which branch of government is responsible for spending? Here's a clue - it's in the Constitution. You might want to read that document.

And Obama's $700 billion for Americans - why did that include bonuses for AIG? How'd he do on his promise to keep unemployment under 8%?

Your criticism is misplaced. It belongs squarely on Government, both parties.

it's all our faults; we have continued for years to elect and re-elect representatives who have refused to address and resolve the spending issues. It was understandble to run a defecit during WW2, but after that there is no excuse.

Yes, It's all Obama's fault, he started the wars, spent billions and trillions on them, and then he ran the economy to a screeching halt, people lost jobs left and right, houses became almost worthless, businesses too big to fail were failing.... OOOOps, my mistake, I meant to say DUBYA, it's all his fault, he slept through his presidency, trashed the nation and left Obama one big train wreck to clean-up.
meant dubya fault slept presidency trashed nation obama train clean-up

Are you STILL BLAMING Dubya??? After all, he has had... um... two years to undo the horrible mess that Dubya did in EIGHT years... Oh, I guess maybe you might be right. Let me go watch Faux News and see what they say. Then I will tell you.

Obama has had less than 16 months.... boy, I would not like to be in his shoes. What a mess he was left.

What a disaster Dubya left. Obama inherited a terrible mess. I agree with you. I almost felt bad to vote for him knowing that whatever he did he was going to be terribly unpopular. The LuniCons have a very short memory. Even so, do you buy their rap about Dubya not being responsible for the economy? We were in terrible shape when he left office. We had been led to believe it was all just fine, remember finding out it was MUCH WORSE than we suspected? What did they do? Fall asleep one night and reboot their brains??? Woke up and suddenly it was Obama's fault?? I am amazed at their denial!

The GOP woke up and realized our economy sucked, and realized if they ever wanted to get elected again, they would have to rewrite history.... so they have been working hard at the revisionist theory. Too bad most of us are not so easily brain washed like the simpletons that make up the GOP base and Tea-hadists!

The GOP learned long ago that about 20% of the people are suicidally stupid and will believe any lie they tell them. These are the Tea-baggers and assorted other RWNJs.
Another 33% are Independents who sometimes pay attention and sometime don't.
So whenever the GOP can scare the Independents (which is often) or blame the Dems for problems the Republicans created, the fascists can win.

You were an adult at the time when Carter lost, right? You recall that Reagan was sworn in and the hostages were released. You recall that Republicans were more than happy to take credit for the hostage release. Even though it was negotiated by Carter and his people.

The amazing part is that they lied about it and ignored it. Obama is elected and lets us know that things really suck. Because he was honest they decided to shoot the messenger. Must be his fault 'cause we found out it sucked after Bush left. I guess being a cretin is easier.

If you looked at the chart of national debt on zfacts.com and still maintain that both parties are responsible for the debt, you probably believe that Fake News is "fair and balanced," too.

What zfacts.com doesn't inform you of who who was in control of congress during those times. Congress controls the purse (that's from the Constitution - you should read it) The president doesn't even have a line item veto that could be overturned by congress that almost every state has. The president has to accept a whole budget, or reject a whole budget.

You really can't tell me you honestly believe Democrats are fiscally responsible?

Zfact only goes through Feb 2009. Let's use the CBO to project that out and show how bad things are with both a Democrat as President and Democrats controlling both houses:

zfact feb 2009 cbo project democrat president democrats controlling houses

And that is before Health Care, which the government is saying now will add to the deficit.

Zfacts didn't show the projections, but the facts are that Bushboy left two costly wars behind as well as a collapsed economy and a $1 trillion annual deficit. To turn all that around will take five to ten years. To blame Obama or the Democrats for the insane and irresponsible spending and tax cutting of the Republican administrations is not only dishonest, it's stupid!
  • Dan D periscope 2010/05/05 01:09:58
    Dan D
To turn it around you have to increase government spending while you take more money from an already stressed economy?

I realize that liberals don't have a good understanding of economic theory, but does that really make sense to you?

Ever hear of Lord John Maynard Keynes? How about Keynesian economics? Guess how we climbed out of the Great Depression? It was government spending, including the spending for WWII.

All of the above proved that government spending can turn an economy around.

Meanwhile Obama is doing a couple of other things to increase revenue to the U.S. Treasury. One of them is going after tax cheats, which is something Bushboy and the Republicans would not do. Expected revenue? $300 billion.

Obama is also allowing the Bushboy tax cuts to the richest Americans to terminate. Expected additional revenue? $400 billion.

And when the economy turns around, there will be additional revenue coming in.

The problem with Republicans is that they don't know how to add, subtract or enforce tax laws.

You mean like Geither and Rangel and Daschel? They were all conveniently let out of the tax fines you and I would have had to pay if were too stupid to understand the taxes we owe.

And if you think the government taking money from the economy, filtering it through a corrupt and inefficient government and putting it back into the economy through poorly managed social programs and give a ways to unions will help us out of the recession then you really don't understand economics.
