“A beefy looking fellow told me, ‘It’s top secret,’ said Cooke, director of the Energy Policy Center at the Independence Institute think tank. “I said, ‘I’m a taxpayer and I want to see what you’re building' and he said it was it was ‘top secret so we can bring Americans a better future.’”

I don't believe these are taxpayer funds as the NREL operates as a public/private cooperative. The article does not say these are taxpayer dollars, and implies that they are not. Your claim that this is "welfare" falls flat.

The article DOES refer to taxpayer funds being used to pay these salaries.. Now,, I WILL admit that this has NOTHING to do with the Government's Official Welfare program but the USE of the term " welfare" to describe Taxpayer Funded Government Corporate and Business Subsidies BEGAN with the Left..

AS usual.. The LEFT makes DISTINCTIONS as they see fit,, NOT as they are..

Dr. Dan Arvizu was appointed by President Bush to Director and Chief Executive of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory. NREL is operated for DOE by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC (Alliance). Dr. Arvizu is President of Alliance. I don't believe that taxpayer dollars are allocated for his salary. Alliance is a private company. Isn't privatization what all you tea party types keep demanding?

Now personally I would prefer that the DOE run the NREL directly and pay the executives directly. That way there would be more accountability. It is the right that keeps pushing for the use of private companies to do government work, leading to the kind of abuses that are inherent in this type of arrangement.
