The federal government has grown WAY beyond what the founders envisioned. Just how big do you think it should be?

I think we need to shrink it back to what was originally outlined in the Constitution. It will be a very difficult task, but it must be done.

It was supposed to be small and now it's out of control and keeps growing like a malignant cancer. First to go the useless Depts of Energy and Education.

Needs to be slashed down to 0.1% of current size.

This is NOT what the founders wanted. They are turning in their graves.

The Federal Government would be about 10% of the US economy. That would include the military!

Protect soveriegnty of nation foreign (defense of borders), and domestic (non-tyrannical police force). Enforce Justice. Coin our money (not fiat Federal Reserve currency). Repeal: IRS; Federal Reserve Act of 1913; 16th amendment; 17th amendment; Dept of Energy; Dept. of Education; FDA; FAA. Reclaim the Gold from the Federal Reserve in trade for Federal Reserve notes and deduct from debt accordingly. Then abolish Federal Reserve notes as currency and that only Gold, Gold certificates, Silver and Silver certificates from the US treasury are currency. Force the US Treas. to perform a static audit of gold to certificates on a 1 to 1 trade value at 32 troy-oz. New locked rate sales tax at 18% in trade for all current federal taxes (state that the rate cannot change and that no other federal taxes can exist). Abandon Keynesian Economics in trade for Austrian School of Economics. ....That would be a good start for the first year.

    Could you repeat the question?

Do you think the "Founders" could have envisioned a population of 330 million persons, the Internet, nuclear threats from lunatics, fighting religious nutcases half a planet away, and a handful of very wealthy persons with enough power to loot, pillage and plunder the entire nation and world? They couldn't envision even a "standing army", and now we have one consuming half of all the revenues our Government can collect and commencing wars
and rumors of wars every few days. I don't think the Founders could have imagined such things even in their worst nightmares, so their imaginations or visions may not be relevant to the 21st Century.

It has definitely overstep the bounds of the Constitution in many ways.

    Its about right.

Well, it's hard to say. How do you measure the size, for example? Employees? Agencies? Budget? Legislation?

And in any event: the American society is so radically different from what it was in those days, so who knows what the Founding Fathers would have deemed appropriate today?

Do you think the Founding Fathers intended for the federal government to regulate every aspect of our lives?

No, but I don't think it does. I imagine you might disagree with me on that one -- but there are entities I worry about more than the federal government.

What aspects of your life are free from federal regulation?

I have freedom of speech. I can read what I want and think what I want. The Second Amendment is still in effect, to name a few.

Which regulations prevent you from living your life the way you want?
  • Rusty S... daehados 2012/01/09 09:40:04

For one, the federal government regulates everything that I put into my body. This includes ALL food, ALL medicine and ALL medical procedures that I am "permitted" to purchase.

My rights that are supposedly protected under the second amendment are HIGHLY regulated, they regulate every firearm that I own and prohibit me from making modifications to the weapons I already have as well as prohibit me from purchasing others without their prior permission.

Freedom of speech? The Federal Communications Commission is expanding it's powers to control every aspect of your communications. They already have the power to shut off your TV, your radio, your telephone and your internet. I have been unable to locate the article of the Constitution that gives them this power.

Just so we're on the same page, I remind that my question was about how you *want* to live your life.

I don't know about you, but I actually *want* someone to QA the food I eat, the medicines I take, and the health care I get. I don't particularly care to be poisoned or mutilated.

And you still have the right to keep and bear arms, don't you?

As for freedom of speech, there mere fact that you are here on SH, expressing yourself freely, is a pretty good indication that the FCC hasn't infringed on your liberties, is it not?

They smoked uncured tobacco, drank crude alcohol, slept in their wool clothes in winter, and had a life expectancy of abour 40 years, and a child mortality rate of about 50%. I'll bet they would have traded their "freedoms" to freeze in winter and die young for what we have today, in a flash.

Not nice, Rusty. Not even conversation of an adult. You need to grow up before engaging in conversations about adult things. When you reveal the limits of your ability to carry a conversation or discussion, you are revealing the limits of your education and experiences. That is why children are sometimes asked to "sit quietly and learn". Advice to you.

Even though he may be swearing, rusty's right, the founding fathers came here to become free, and they certainly wouldn't trade being free for pretty much anything.

I hate to point out the obvious absurdity in your argument, but perhaps you have never confronted reality. If the "Founders" were of an opinion that being "free" to do as they pleased, why did they risk their lives and fortunes to FORM A GOVERNMENT???? If you take time to carefully read the letters and writings of these "founders, you would realize several things about them - First, only a couple of them "came here", all the rest were second or third generation offspring of families that "came here"; Second, they realized that a Government was absolutely necessary for a civilized society to exist, even then when the population was spread across almost unlimited space and the organized threats to their safety were practically non-existent; Third, their motive was greatly directed toward escaping from the tyranny of the wealthy Royalty of Europe, including the "Crown", which oppressed them much in the same manner as the Reagan Banks and Wall Street's billionaires oppress the mass of citizens today.

The "Founders" were not escaping Government, but FORMING A GOVERNMENT TO PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM THE OPPRESSIONS OF AN UNJUST ACCUMULATION OF WEALTH AND POWER BY A FEW, JUST AS EXISTS TODAY.

Those of you who have been captured by the propaganda of the oppressors are much like the "Tories" of old, given to either having an interest in the oppressors, else just afraid to think of being rid of them and again free to govern ourselves for the benefit of "WE THE PEOPLE". Read the rest of that opening to the Declaration of Independence and then come back and tell me some story of
how those who signed the document were trying to be "free" to do as they pleased without a Government to protect themselves.
