Now these avoid.” (2 Timothy 3:2-5)
The fact of the gross sinners described here "holding a form of godliness" identifies this particular discussion of the apostasy as descriptive of the inner character of many in the apostate church of today, thus, it characterizes the last days, or last hour, as John stated. Outsiders are not primarily in view here, but those who hold a form of belief or godliness. The Pharisees were an example of this and Paul here described a class of people who went under the name of Christ even in his day (1 John 2:18-19). The command given to “avoid” the ungodly shows that the apostles treated the symptoms of the last times as in some respects present even in their times. This should not to be surprising as John stated in his first epistle; “it is the last hour; and as you have heard that Antichrist cometh, even now there are become many Antichrists:”, and in 2 Thess. 2:7, Paul also indicated that the "spirit of lawlessness" as already at work. Both of these passages indicate that Paul never expected the return of Christ in his own times.
