The "broad brush" diversion. Effective or lame?

I've noticed how SOME ( lol ) people respond to an accusation with:

"not ALL of us are that way. You shouldn't generalize and paint with a broad brush".
They don't refute the charge, but instead try to divert and put the accuser on the defensive.

Example: "Guys are pigs and only want sex". Someone may respond...not ALL guys, but not challenge the accusation.

Feel free to insert your favorite group of people and ask yourself... is this an effective debate tactic, or just a lame diversion to answering the question?

I don't understand why typing some (lol) is so difficult? I also don't understand why some (lol) people enjoy baiting others so much?

To each their own I suppose. I am better than that.

As to your question, if you try to refute the charge some (lol) people just get dismissive and insulting, rather than debating the issue.

And yet some people are blind to the exceptions, and evem more lack common sense. When you paint with a broad brush you are giving both types fuel.

Wow. Ironic that you don't see that your own response is a perfect example ... wonderful illustration of the principle though ... thanks!

I do this sometimes, especially when talking about people from countries other than mine, If I don't put that disclaimer, I"m attacked by people also saying, not all of us are like that and they go off topic , giving the good things their country does or how bad my country is and not talking about the the main issue of the question.

I just figure I'll get that out of the way , " not all are like that"

It's irritating that I have to put that disclaimer but for me to keep on topic I'll do it.

This site is mostly American but did you notice how diplomatic I was in saying "I do this sometimes, especially when talking about people from countries other than mine,"

So I even did it on your question of doing it, Became a habit I guess
