Microsoft's forthcoming Surface tablet is the iPad rival that businesses have been waiting for, according to CIOs around the world polled by ZDNet and TechRepublic.

The CIO Jury groups from Asia, Australia and the UK and US all voted 'yes' to the question: "Will Microsoft’s Surface tablet provide a real alternative to the iPad?"

Image credit: Josh Lowensohn/CNET NewsThe CIO Jury is ZDNet and TechRepublic's quick response panel of tech leaders around the globe. The first 12 CIOs from the pool to respond to a yes or no question become the 'jury' for that question.

All three groups voted yes, albeit by different margins, reflecting the Surface tablet could be a genuine challenger to the iPad, Apple's hugely successful tablet that has not faced much serious competition until now.

I may have read about it but if so I forgot about it and I suspect most of the market will forget about it too. All tablets compare themselves to the iPad for a good reason. As for Microsoft, well... no thanks. I gave up my Bill Gates virus magnet and my Apple products still work as good today as the day I bought them. Sure I could trade my iPhone 3 for a 4 or soon a 5 but don't really need to to. Same for my iMac and Air. I was replacing my virus magnets routinely. Saving money now....

Poor Fawkes below.... he and I disagree routinely about politics but it looks like we are at opposite ends on this too. I use to be all about PC's and when the hardware was doubling in power every two years, it was great to upgrade and carry my software apps with me. Soon the hardware advanced less quickly while the Internet became the primary function. Then I had a credit card hacked and I increased my security which brought my internet connection to it's knees. It seemed that the computer was spending more time scanning for viruses and worms than letting me read email. Switched to Mac and knew I'd never go back.

However I do have a radio control simulator program that won't run on Mac (yet) so I ran the reinstall disk on my PC and install that particular program on it but it is NOT connected to the internet. Best firewall ever is to disconnect the internet cable.

It amazes me how all my Apple gear works seemlessly together. This is what I was looking for all those years I was running Windows. Fawkes complains that the Apple gear has planned obsolescence but the same thing applys to PC's. I think Apple would have to make some great strides for me to feel the need to upgrade any of my gear. It could happen... who knows what the future holds?

Technology in general has planned obsolescence. I'm on a 4 year old white
Macbook. This Macbook has run flawlessly. I have a pile of useless PC's.
My wife has a much newer supposedly more powerful HP laptop.
I loaded my audio software on the HP and took it for a spin. It took me less
than a minute to lock it up with midi programming.
The much older Macbook blows the much newer HP out of the water.
This Mac screams with Ableton Live rewired to Propellerhead Reason.
Plug in the midi controller and the sound cards and the old mac says
lets start having fun. Plus I can have multi syths and effects running tons midi programming while I'm giving the Mac real time midi commands.
If this Mac died tomorrow I'd be buying a new one the next day.

No one can compete with the Ipad apps. If you're into music, art, or just loads of
super cool fun apps, Ipad rules. Plus Ipad can run as a midi controller for
a DAW on your Macbook. COOL COOL COOL.

Apple products have historically been an exercise in planned obsolescence. Example: Anyone out there want an iPad I? Right now I'm typing this on an old Microsoft Product - A Pentium M running Windows XP. Sure I upgraded the memory and Hard Drive and put in a better display adapter, but it does everything I need it to do just as fast (and sometimes faster) than another brand new PC I have that runs Windows 8. Lets see a 10 year old Apple product keep up with today's programs and internet demands.

I heard something about it but haven't looked into it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I have the Ipad and love it.
