Part-Time Economy: Only 47% of Americans Have Full-Time Work

part-time economy 47 americans full-time work

An alarming aspect of the jobs report released this week is just how few Americans are working full-time. “Of the 144 million Americans employed last month, only 116 million were working full-time,” reports Breitbart. “Friday’s report showed that 58.7% of the civilian adult population of 245 million was working last month. Only 47% of Americans, however, had a full-time job.”

The number of part-time jobs in the American economy surged to an all-time high of 28,059,000 while full-time jobs fell 240,000.

If you’re wondering why the Obama administration decided to delay the implementation of the Obamacare employer mandate, this is why. That mandate provides a heavy incentive for businesses to move their labor to part-time work by exempting those working less than 30 hours per week from a requirement for health insurance coverage.

Also, the labor participation rate continues to hover at a 25-year low:

Labor Force Part June_0

And the underemployment rate, people who want full-time work but can’t find it, is at 14.3%:

20130705_U6_0

But what’s troubling about our part-time economy is the heavy burden American workers carry in terms of government. Looking at the federal government’s revenues, 41.6% comes from income taxes. Another 40% comes from payroll taxes.

As the expense of the federal government, and massive entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security, grows heavier the load is falling on the backs of fewer Americans who are working less hours.

Indeed a job killer in more ways than one. It will increase the deficit, it will raise insurance premiums, it will cause doctors to quit en masse and it will increase the cost of health care all things the president promised would not happen--if that isn't deception I don't know what is?

I believe it is sad that so many people are underemployed and having a hard time making end meet. Look on the bright side, Obama is getting credit for low unemployment numbers, and they are BS.

Never fear! Corporations are adaptable; they're already finding ways around this! Work 'em 29 hours calendar week one, 11 hours on calendar week two followed by two days off and repeat. Thurs- Mon for example. Books are good, employee gets 40 hrs, and you need offer half or no benefits at all! Sweet deal...

I heard on the radio that there is or will be an amendment to the Obamacare law that puts limits on how many part time employees a company can have compared to full timers.
Have any of you all read about that?
It just sounds like more authoritarianism to me, but I haven't yet seen the details.

Private sector union contracts often have something similar in their contracts. They compare how much overtime hours regular employees are having to work and extrapolate how many additional full time employees that would constitute.

Death by a thousand cuts. This is just one aspect of the overall plan to destroy America. I am sure BO and company are wondering what else they can do to 'kill' America and I am sure they are surprised that she just won't die !!

Remember back during the presidential debates, the main topics were jobs and the economy? Has anyone heard that four-letter word 'jobs' come out of BO's mouth since?

    (silence) I thought not.

Just putting Americans back to work would cure so many ills... unemployment benefits, down .. food stamps, down.. tax revenues, up.. medicare payments, up .. etc.

Does this take into consideration the number of those polled whom have more than one part time job? That may effect the overall totals extending out to a person to job ratio..also may have an effect on an actual unemployment rate. I'll have to read this all over again, AFTER i drink my coffee. (Good Morning!:)) at any rate this healthcare crap will have a tragic effect on the economy, it will be horrific to the healthcare industry...the government cannot even do IT'S OWN damn job, and now its gonna try to muscle into the healthcare platform..*slaps-forehead* Need...more...coffee...

“Lawlessness Is The New Normal.” No Hope On The Jobs Front - Paul Craig Roberts

Do you remember the promise of the New Economy that was going to replace the lost “dirty fingernail” manufacturing jobs with innovative highly paid New Economy jobs? Well, the promise was just another deception from the elites who have stolen Americans’ future.

For the umpteenth consecutive month and year, the June BLS payroll jobs report (released on July 5) shows that the US economy has created no such jobs. The same old tired categories account for the same old lowly paid new domestic service jobs.

Of the 195,000 new private sector jobs alleged to have been created, 75,000 or 38% are accounted for by the category “leisure and hospitality.” Within this category there were 52,000 new waitresses and bartenders, and 19,000 jobs in “amusements gambling, and recreation.”

Retail trade added 37,000 employees. Is your local shopping center that busy? Wholesale trade added 11,000. (Perhaps the New Economy’s inefficiency requires more people to sell less.) Professional and business services added, allegedly, 53,000 jobs, which are largely building management services, janitors, employment services, and temporary help.

Local government, despite severe budget cuts, added 13,000 jobs. The BLS news release points out that the number of involuntary part-time workers (the number of people who are unable to find full-time jobs or whose hours were cut back) increased by 322,000 in June to 8.2 million.

This deplorable report provided the cover for the market riggers to take the stock market up and the gold market down. Remember that economic theory about “rational markets”? Another deception.

The trend of part time employment started about 30 years ago so that employers did not have to pay for benefits. Unfortunately most of the job where people worked full time have been shipped to China.

Except for modest financial services gains and some highly sought skill areas, virtually zero high-quality jobs were created.

The average workweek and overtime hours were unchanged. Year-over-year hourly earnings rose 2.2%. At around 9% based on 1980s calculations, inflation is multiple times higher than official numbers.

According to economist John Williams, full-time June employment plunged by 240,000. "Economic issues accounted for 75% of" part-time jobs. "Payroll gains were warped heavily by inconsistent seasonal factors."

Discouraged workers rose by 197,000. Involuntary part-time ones spiked by 322,000. Real unemployment's 23.4%. The headline 7.6% figure is fake.

    More LW lies!
