A 21-year-old Texas man is being credited with protecting his family by shooting one of three men suspected of forcing their way into their home outside of Houston.

Harris County Sheriff's deputies tell KHOU.com that the man's father was pushed to the ground by one of the suspects when he answered the door Thursday night.

When the intruders went to attack the mother, the son ran to retrieve his father's gun and fatally shot one of the suspects, the report states. The other two suspects reportedly fled the scene.

Police later spotted a vehicle with two men who matched the suspects' descriptions and took them in for questioning, the station reported.

Neighbors said the son's actions were justified. No charges are expected to be filed against him, according to the report.

"People can’t go breaking into people’s homes and not expect some sort of consequence," Harry Moulder told the station.

yes, that is a perk of the second amendment being able to protect your family. can you imagine what would have happend to those three peopel if the son had not had acess to a gun

If a gun is used, there is close to 60% that the gun will be used on oneself. They are lucky that it turned out well but I am sure there have been cases where the father was killed instead.

It's the only defense.The son is a hero. He saved the lives of his mother and father as well as his own. Without a weapon in that house those people would all be dead.

Guns are certainly a great deterrent, provided you can get to it quick enough. I have my weapon unloaded and keep it in one room and the clip in another - our granddaughter lives with us and this is one nosy kid, so for her safety, we are extra careful with the gun. I happen to be disabled and live in a hospital bed, which is in the living room and I have a clear and straight view of the front door.

I keep a can of wasp spray within my reach - it is an excellent instant deterrent - it burns their eyes enough to drop them to their knees and it will shoot a good 15-20 feet! Its a low budget way to keep yourself safe.

This is just one more heart warning story about guns stopping a crime in progress. During a time of an emergency a gun is only an arms length away, while a cop is 15 minutes away, when seconds count.

I do believe that dogs are a great deterrent, however if the person who wants in has a gun, they'll likely to shoot your dogs. The best part of the dogs would be their barking to alert you, so you can retrieve your weapon and call 911. The most well trained dog is no match for a jerk with a gun.

I don't know. I have three German Shepards. They will come at you from different angles. A single intruder would not be able to take them all out before one reached him. (and it only takes one)
My money is on my dogs.

How many people do you know that are fast enough to take out three attacking dogs? They would only have a couple of seconds to get off three shots in three different directions. I know guns sometimes make the wielder feel invincible, but they aren't the greatest protection in this instance. Well trained dogs and locked doors/windows will go a lot further.
Most people who commit these crimes will by-pass a house just knowing there is a dog, just because it isn't worth the hassle. These crimes are rarely very well planned.
