BLAZE EXCLUSIVE: TX HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS MADE TO RECITE MEXICAN NATIONAL ANTHEM, PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

Posted on October 17, 2011 at 8:56am by Madeleine Morgenstern

Students in a Texas public high school were made to stand up and recite the Mexican national anthem and Mexican pledge of allegiance as part of a Spanish class assignment, but the school district maintains there was nothing wrong with the lesson.

It happened last month in an intermediate Spanish class at Achieve Early College High School in McAllen, Texas — a city located about 10 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.

Wearing red, white and green, students had to memorize the Mexican anthem and pledge and stand up and recite them in individually in front of the class.

That didn’t go over well with sophomore Brenda Brinsdon. The 15-year-old sat down and refused to participate. She also caught it all on video:

“I just thought it was out of hand, I didn’t think it was right,” she told The Blaze. “Reciting pledges to Mexico and being loyal to it has nothing to do with learning Spanish.”

She said she was particularly offended because the presentations in teacher Reyna Santos’s class took place during “Freedom Week,” the week after the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, and on U.S. Constitution Day — the same day as Mexico’s Independence Day.

“Why are we doing their independence when it‘s Freedom Week and it’s also Constitution Day?” Brinsdon said.

Brinsdon said she complained to the school principal, Yvette Cavazo, who told her it was part of the curriculum and that she should participate. Her father, William, also got involved, calling the school district superintendent to complain.

If this had been an American History class and the teacher had made everyone wear red, white, and blue and recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the National Anthem all the bleeding heart liberals on this thread would have been screaming to high heavens about it. You just can't get past the hypocrisy that is the leftist in this country. Good for Brenda for standing up for her convictions.

What the he!! does reciting the "Mexican" national anthem and pledge have to do with "Spanish" class? I commend the young lady for NOT going along!

I think she made the right call. She chose to work against indoctrination when her fellow students just gave in and let it be. We need more people like her in this country. As for the situation I find it highly inappropriate given it's timing, and I find it irrelevant to the curriculum, and from the video it seems to be a clear agenda in the teacher's mind.

They weren't "forced." It was part of a Spanish class; what language would you expect them to speak in a Spanish class?

When you were a kid, were you ever allowed NOT to do an assignment?
The very fact that this was an 'assignment', ie to LEARN the pledge and the song tells me that the teacher meant it to happen one way or another.

In every class, there are requirements. No student has to do an assignment or homework; of course, there are consequences. Whiny-ass Brenda probably shouldn't have taken Spanish; it appears she really didn't want to learn how to speak the language. Balking at this assignment is just an indication of what she may have heard about Spanish speakers at home.

There was nothing wrong with this assignment.

I have no idea what the hell white people in this country will do when they're no longer the majority. Maybe, at some point, they'll understand the need for diversity or, better yet, maybe we can just ship their sorry asses back to Europe. Of course, I doubt they could survive in Europe.

It was a Spanish class; apparently, there was only one student who objected, namely whiny-ass Brenda whom I suspect wasn't doing that well in her Spanish class and/or brought some of bigotry she learned at home to school that day.

I would walk out of the school run home and get a flag and parade it around in front of those traitor teachers siting the Pledge of Allgiance in English!

I think it is time to liberate our schools from all this PC bull crap as well as our nation. PC is not all it is cracked up to be. After all just because you don't say it out load does not mean you don't think it or believe it. PC just covers up the truth with a lie.

Looks like little Brenda got her 15 minutes of fame...too bad she chose Glennis' Blaze.

Fact: ALL students had the choice to opt out and get another assignment as was little whiny Brenda. Obviously her classmates are much more mature and less insecure then her.

For people who are appalled: If you go to the Olympics what do you do when they are playing another country's anthem? Throw tomatoes?

Oh, and for my middle school Spanish class we were offered to actually GO to Mexico. Bet those damned liberal teachers in their sneaky ways were trying to get us to defect from America and become Mexicans! *sarc*

No, we don't 'throw tomatoes' but we don't sing along with them and then pledge to their flag.

And if I had kids that young, I would NEVER allow them to go to Mexico.

Good for her, and sticking to her convictions. I would've done the same. I'm not sure why mandating students stand up and pledge allegiance to the Mexican flag or sing it's anthem is required. If it's spanish class then the job of the teacher is to teach spanish, not to teach them mexican social studies. Students are there to learn a second language not to embrace and entire other country.

As an American citizen I pedge no allegiance to any other country except American, I will bow down to no other country.

As so common in todays schools, this is an example of a teacher forgetting her place and her job. In this instance, she directed her teaching students of a second language to teaching them of social studies of Mexico. Not her job and this teacher needs to understand that as an American citzen we are not to pledge allegiance to any other country...she should know this if she is an American citizen herself.
