We've heard of drinking cough syrup, huffing compressed air, snorting "bath salts," and smoking synthetic spice, but this is a new one. Teens are reportedly filming themselves downing hand sanitizer because of the 62% ethyl alcohol content (hard liquor is typically 40%-45%) and posting the videos on YouTube. Six kids have already landed in the emergency room because of it.

Dr. Young-jin Sue, a pediatric toxicologist at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, told The New York Daily News, "Teens don’t have access to ethyl alcohol so they resort to crazy things. It's very concentrated, just a few ounces can make someone sick." Doctors suggest parents buy their hand sanitizer in foam form if they're worried, but even then, the teens can buy it themselves. The "story" is incomplete Soda Head "reporters"....First off...how many teens are we talking about? ...3, 4,,5, 10?... or several thousand? Not expecting any answers. Cuz it's only a 'sensationalist story' anyway. Strictly for the purpose of 'marketing news'.

Most likely some You Tube is showing a few kids doing this, but of course it becomes:
"Teens are reportedly filming themselves...."

I agree with other comments, too many kids left with too much idle time without supervision. What really ticks me off, is every time some idiot decides to get high off of something new, stores are made to pull them off the shelves.

Well, I already voted yes but I forgot about frog licking. That was sicker and potentially more damaging or lethal. But it wasn't as dumb. At least there was some logic behind the frog licking. The frog poison was something you couldn't get anywhere else or make yourself. But to get ALCOHOL? That's just plain stupid and lazy. I can't imagine kids so dumb they would do this just to get alcohol. What's happened to ingenuity? When I was a kid, there was fake proof, getting an older person to buy it, or with a little planning, you just bought a few gallons of apple cider a week before the party, leave it in the sun a few days. Alcohol is so easily made to begin with, yep, I change my vote...not the "sickest" but certainly the dumbest and laziest!

The children in America has life too easy & too much freedom. they have too much every gagdets, cell phones, phone I-Pads, Laptops bought for them by parents, its still not enough, they are bored so they are looking at ways to do other things, I never bought everything my children saw advertised & wanted, they did ask I'll think about it..I am still thinking about a lot of things. I took them to the movies on weekends what they wanted to see..Parents needs to engage with their children..go museums etc..

I think the teens that are doing that need to realize they could die from it. life is too short and too precious to waste it on junk like that. they should think about others before they think about themselves. if they're really that interested in getting a high or getting drunk then they should talk to their parents maybe their parents are cool I know I understand what it's like to be a teenager I have 2 children of my own and I would rather than have it in a safe environment like my home under my supervision. where they can try it once and be safe with out worry about it killing them or putting them in any harms way. I would rather not have my children in a place where they cannot experiment with what they do when they grow up then have them do it in a place where they could possibly die get hurt get sick all because they could not experiment and try to figure things out for themselves as teenagers like to do. I know from personal experience that's children do experiment and want to do things more when their parents tell them no.

Not a good idea. Teens rarely have good ideas, research has proven a teen brain can not understand consequences . They really should be supervised at all times by the parents. You play and have a kid YOU pay by keeping them in line. Besides that type of alcohol van cause blindness, the reason not even homeless bums drink it.

It may be one of the grossest yet conceived, but it's certainly not the sickest. I come from the generation that used to huff Carbona (a product you cannot really find anymore because of its caustic nature) to get a buzz. I used to use that stuff to clean carbon build-up off electrical contacts; can you imagine what it was doing to people's lungs?

If people are stupid and mentally weak enough to do these types of things, then they deserve what they get. I didn't have a Shirley Temple childhood, yet I was never compelled to destroy myself for fun, even when I was a teen. These people belong to the low- on- totem- pole gene pool club.

I've also heard of guys eating glass and bullets to impress their friends. I mean.. what the forn is wrong with these people? I don't care if they are teens. They're dunces.

Sniffing glue and turpentine is probably just as bad, which is why I marked NO for this question.

It's sick, but maybe not the sickest one I've heard of. Teaching people and kids to become lazy and dependent, give me, give me, give me, I don't have to do anything other than what I want, and big brother will take care of me. It's possibly coming now to not being able to even teach kids responsibilities who live on farms, for heaven's sakes. Between some parents who don't try and teach their kids anything, and gov't. trying to make a lazy, anything goes generation, some parents need to be more involved in their kids lives, and make sure they are taught how to be responsible and independent, and use their common sense. It won't stop all kids from trying something stupid or dangerous, but it would help, and some who do who have been brought up with good ethics, will from what I have seen, a lot will not continue doing stupid things, even though they may have experimented at first.

However, following the condom mentality, maybe Planned Parenthood ought to give them booze. I mean the top shelf stuff, not the rotgut off the bottom shelf. The booze would lower their inhibitions, which would mean more condoms would be distributed and if kids didn't use those condoms, then PP could perform more abortions. It is what is known as a Win-Win solution.
