We've heard of drinking cough syrup, huffing compressed air, snorting "bath salts," and smoking synthetic spice, but this is a new one. Teens are reportedly filming themselves downing hand sanitizer because of the 62% ethyl alcohol content (hard liquor is typically 40%-45%) and posting the videos on YouTube. Six kids have already landed in the emergency room because of it.

Dr. Young-jin Sue, a pediatric toxicologist at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, told The New York Daily News, "Teens don’t have access to ethyl alcohol so they resort to crazy things. It's very concentrated, just a few ounces can make someone sick." Doctors suggest parents buy their hand sanitizer in foam form if they're worried, but even then, the teens can buy it themselves. The "story" is incomplete Soda Head "reporters"....First off...how many teens are we talking about? ...3, 4,,5, 10?... or several thousand? Not expecting any answers. Cuz it's only a 'sensationalist story' anyway. Strictly for the purpose of 'marketing news'.

Most likely some You Tube is showing a few kids doing this, but of course it becomes:
"Teens are reportedly filming themselves...."

So far it seems to be right up there amongst the stupidest. What the world needs now [that was a good song] is more moral education along the lines of "getting high on life" itself, period. This business of getting high on various substances is really dumb. I don't understand the need to escape life when there is so much to see and do and so little time in which to see and do it.

this story has been a little over blown. All it needed was a warning to parents that some children are reducing hand sanitizer to 120 proof alcohol. There was 1 teenage last year that did drink way to much of the alcohol and that 14 had minor problems after drinking it.

There are a lot of really dumb ways to get high, this is just one of them. I'm a recovering alcoholic and never did I drink hand sanitizer. If I didn't have my liquor I would go to the bar and find some guy to buy me a drink. I really hope my kids don't ever do something this stupid. And you can't really blame it all on parenting. You could be raising great kids until they meet that one or 2 kids at school that are "so cool", and next thing you know your kid is snorting something weird up their nose to fit in.

No, glue and fly sprays are probably worse and there may well be others even more ridiculous. This nonsense can largely be blamed on the stupid war on drugs that continues to deprive people of safer recreational highs at reliable doses as well as adding mistique to the whole idea. Dangerous experimentation with inferior alternative substances is only a small aspect of the harm caused by the war on drugs. The loss of many fundamental freedoms as governments continue to wage this stupid war is a more significant harm, as is the loss of respect for authority and law and the civil mayhem this is increasingly leading to.

Terrifying. It upsets me the way the news media gloms on to stories like this and sensationalizes what was probably a fairly isolated incident. How many kids now,nationwide,would never have come up with this themselves but now have the idea?.....as for YouTube, again a way of spreading bad ideas and becoming famous for it. :( ..... I am embarrassed to admit it, but many years ago,when I was in boarding school,we tried to get drunk drinking mouthwash....to this day I cannot stand even the idea of creme de menth cocktails! Kids think they are invincible. There is even scientific proof now that part of their brain is not yet fully developed in adolescence ...this is just anecdotal proof that it's true! Intentionally drinking POISON! ???

Not the sickest high, but it is defenitly not wise. There are other ingredients in that stuff that can cause blindness, liver and kidney failure, and all sorts of problems that can be life long. What really bothers me is that 33% at the time I'm posting this say no..... I can only hope that's because of how this is worded.

Anyone who has said Yes is really out of touch with what goes on today.

Theres always stupid kids willing to try everything because they cant get there hands on conventional drugs (which are usually safer compared to what these kids try). One of them is spraying large amounts Lynx (aerosol spray) into your mouth with a sock over it, this is probably deadly.

Idiots have tried putting everything into every part of there body, but to be fair to them, thats probably how we found out we could use the drugs we do today, human Guinea pigs.
