Teachers forget to teach basic civics because their political agenda interferes.

I remember teachers repeating the phrase "Dissent is Patriotic" during President George W. Bush's two terms in office.

Last Monday, a high school student in North Carolina engaged his social studies teacher in a heated debate about politics and the two leading presidential candidates. During the exchange, the teacher (an obvious Obama supporter) got very angry with the student and accused him...

The Salisbury Post reported:
In response to the Romney story, conservatives have recently been pointing to a passage in Obama’s book, “Dreams from My Father,” in which the president writes that while in grade school he shoved a little girl, the only other black student in his grade, after other students called him her boyfriend. When the student tells the teacher that Obama admitted to bullying a girl in school, the teacher goes on the defensive.“Stop, no, because there is no comparison,” she says. Romney, she says, is “running for president. Obama is the president.”When the student says they’re both “just men,” the teacher continues to argue that Romney, as a candidate for president, is not to be afforded the same respect as the president.

I am responding this way because this was a high school student, on the assumption that he/she was mature enough to have an actual "debate" with the teacher.
Younger children SHOULD be taught respect of authority. In the world of a grade-schooler, the Presidency is the ultimate symbol of authority and the nuance of politics is mostly beyond them. Any negativity they pick up is more likely to instill a general negativity toward the Presidency, or anything else they associate. Of course, glorifying a particular man, as in the case of the students chanting Barack Obama's name, is going overboard in the other direction. Children don't just repeat what they hear, they internalize it and build their ultimate world-views on those foundations.
Still, that assumption of maturity in the high school student goes against a lot of my experience. I hope that the student was being an intelligent young person, frustrating some tenured idiot who was spoilt by authority, rather than just an unruly kid spouting personal attacks (sure, there are plenty of adults doing just that, but that is no excuse).
Sounds more like a hysterical babysitter than a teacher, doesn't she?
which was this teachers only point.
she's right, its not equal.
yes, he's a public figure just like Romney and as such subject to the same free speech assaults as any public figure under the law,
But he IS the sitting POTUS which, if we value the office, deserves a higher level of respect while in office.
I did not like Bush, I disagreed with nearly everything he stood for, but he was (especially after 9/11) the POTUS and deserved the benefit of the doubt.... which I gave him.
he's since proven that he did not deserve that treatment, nor my respect, but at the time it was the right thing to do.
yeah there trying the same B/S here in my sons school ....
he said the same thing ,,,I've been called in many times ,,,and defended him ...then cant do anything about it ..
he's not saying anything rude / vulgar ,, just he's useless ,, and a liar ..
.I said a few things worse than that ....!
this is where this education system as gone to "indoctrination " not teaching !
My english teacher showed us campaign videos (we had to figure out was persuasive technique they used). She showed five that were for/endorsed republican canadates and one that dissed Obama (which was a Romney ad).
YOU TELL ME.
The public education system is a wreck; this video proves it.
Also, what are they even doing in that classroom? The video reminds me of my middle school days. Too many teachers are just baby sitters with agendas and bad attitudes.
you'd be surprised ....
FIRE THIS CLOWN.
