Teacher Helps Students Cheat Because She Says They’re ‘Dumb As Hell’: Do You Blame Public Schools or Kids?

Public school teachers may want to blame kids and parents for their poor performance, but public school teachers -- and their unions -- have their share of the blame. CBS reports that math teacher Shayla Smith didn't act alone in her unsavory behavior.
Smith’s case was part of a larger investigation that implicated approximately 180 public school teachers in the city, sparked by investigations performed by the newspaper.
Parents do share part of the blame as well, but cheating to help kids goes beyond acceptable for a teacher. Cheating teaches the wrong values and ethics, which hurt more than just bad grades -- it corrupts the students and their future children.

ATLANTA.CBSLOCAL.COM reports:
A local former fifth-grade teacher implicated in a cheating scandal reportedly offered the students the illegal help because she thought they were "dumb as hell."

This 'idiot' is an example of the worst kind of teacher. I am a credentialed Connecticut K-12 teacher who opted for industry. However, during my short time in the classroom, had developed some strong opinions. The enemy of American public education is the union. Too many teachers have become robots, having succumbed to union handlers (NEA). Recent actions in Chicago are representative of the K-12 system; to hell with the students, community, and nation. Typical teacher interests are: salary (break the bank), how many days off or how many days must we show up in the damn classroom, how little we must perform, who can we blame for lower SAT scores, when I/we can retire, and at what salary, and and and. Just today, another swamp is being entertained; dropping the four year high school to two years. And, so goes American education... Our kids are drowning in the sea of incompetence and bureaucratic scum.

I have a cousin who is a retired School teacher who would disagree with you after spending time i St.Louis Public schools where the parents got mad at you if you sent there sick kids home, you were a babysitter, not a teacher.

I know this too, and should have made comment. No idea why your cousin would disagree with my comments, but parental attitudes do play a huge part in the educational system. Throwing the baby out with the bath water is brutal; but I've witnessed too much damage by the NEA and surrogates. I too have family members who are outstanding K-12 teachers. In addition, my younger brother earned his masters and doctorate at USC where his now an associate professor. Sort of been there and done that. The equation is complex, but no one seems to stand up and take a stand. Our kids and nation are token interests of the friggin' K-12 establishment resulting with everyone losing.

You left the biggest problem out, Mom and Mom, Dad and Dad, or just plain old fashion Mom and Dad. It gotta start at home. Come on parents, at least go to Parent/Teacher meetings.

Just meant for not commenting about the importance of parents working with the school and teacher; rather than assume the attack mode because their brat was out of order.

What I said, after thinkin about it, was disturbing. It's great that over the last couple of decades people have learned that they can stand up to authority. I think the problem is, people have chosen the wrong targets. The teachers are in the line of fire because their the first authority figure most people really remember. So instead of working with teachers, people find easy targets. What to do about it, I don't know. It would be nice if we could spread a little humility out there and relax a little and get some important things done. Like the education of our kids.

Get rid of teacher tenure & boot out unions and make children the center of education. The teachers ,unions and the democrat party are solely and totally responsible for the decline of public schools. The main criteria for teacher recruitment should be the deep desire to teach. . Why should anyone including students respect a tardy ,obese, froth dripping teacher for a role model. Teaching profession is a life time dedication.

I should have teachers hit kids but didn't really start thinking about it till after I voted.

Its a mix of both. Schools are constantly getting their funding cut more and more and parents are to scared to discipline their kids so they grow up to be spoiled brats. I remember my parents telling me how if they got bad grades or talked back when they were kids they would get a whooping when they got home. Often times with a belt or wooden spoon. But in today's day and age if you were to do that you would be jailed for child abuse and most likely have your kids taken from you.

If you ask me teachers should be allowed to hit students again and parents should be allowed to use a belt on their kids as long as its under 5 licks, on the butt, and not with the metal end. Oh and I know what its like to be hit as a kid. I remember learning the ABC's and my dad smacking me upside the head every time I made a mistake. I had a bloody lip and a cut on my head by the end but I learned the ABC's in one night.

    This should be allowed.

Interesting thought with regard to punishment of students. There were times.... The city of New Haven had hired me on the spot. My academic credentials were very good (honors), but equally I believe one area of interest was my six years active duty with army ground pounders. Kick ass mentality! But, then the world of the ACLU and liberal progressives would ruin city coffers.... No win scenario. Catch 22.... We're in a horrible mess and one person's comment about TENURE was right on. I failed to mention this important facet. Thanx to the party who threw this important and relevant missile.

The blame must fall on many shoulders, I'd have to say. Media rarely hypes anything of cerebral value. Parents care less about what their kids are doing, as long as it's legal, etc. Kids don't see "down the road" enough to realize they should be reading REAL books instead of playing video games all the time. Public Schools are drooling mindless curricula out of their slack mouths.

Parents must instill the value of knowledge upon their kids.
Kids must learn to recognize and pursue the knowledge put forth.
Schools must start to teach things we can actually use. And they should start early.

Public schools are the problem ever since the creation of the department of education... Kids will continue to be the product of this poor educational environment with this one size fits all approach. If anyone ever gets the chance to watch a documentary regarding this subject check out "Waiting for Superman" It will make you both angry and sad about our pisspoor educational system...

Public schools that continue to pass kids on to the next grade, knowing that they don't/can't meet the criteria. Horrendous for a child, who already feels lost, and a "don't bother me with this" from the teachers who are forced to clean up each others errors in judgement.

I'm not sure it entirely the schools themselves that are the blame. It is more the coddling attitude that we can't punish those that fail to perform. The kids that do poorly, still get to go out to recess and on field trips. If they can't pass the test, we make the test easier. It's a race to the bottom!! If the student doesn't do well in a subject, they direct them towards a subject that is less demanding and more subjective so they can show their diversity and creativity... Its time to instill a little discipline. Reward the hard workers and punish the slackers. We need less creative, sensitive little darlings and more people prepared to work and make something of themselves. The teachers need to label failure as such and the parents should back them up.

We have paid more money on education than any other country on earth "It's a fact"... Whenever there is a problem with education the liberal politicians throw more money at it to try to fix the problem. "WE RANK 27th IN THE WORLD IN MATH AND SCIENCE" Another fact is that the department of education is ran by the liberal democrats who are beholdened to the teachers unions... Our colleges are now for the most part indoctrination centers as for your comment, I can see that they've done a bang up job on you!...

But I blame their parents more than anyone else. It's a parents responsibility to ensure their kids are prepared for life and that includes their life at school.

Let's keep passing the personal responsibility of parents by when it comes to their kids and their schooling. It's much easier and more convienient to make their failures a political issue than it is to accept the truth.

I blame the system not the teachers. Our system is outdated. Kids need to be SHOWN why they need to learn the things they are taught. My daughter is a straight A student but that is only because I have conversed her that math and science are just an intelligence test and if she gets a C people with think she is stupid when she grows up. Telling her she needed to know it didn't work because she wants to be a writer. Why does a writer need to know calculus? I am a mechanical engineer and I have NEVER had to use calculus on the job! The just need to teach them to read and write and then kick them out in the real world. If they find they need come back and learn calculus or whatever then do that. We make school a once in a lifetime shot. Shouldn't be like that at all.

NEVER LET SCHOOL INTERFERE WITH YOUR EDUCATION.

The pressure is on teachers to pass the little kiddies whether they learned or not. Giving a bad grade any of them could also be considered racist. What the teacher did is wrong but I understand her frustration.

Teachers are no longer allowed to discipline kids at school on any level. The kids are disrespectful, and the teachers have no choice but to take it. Parents are no longer disciplining their children, and it shows every where you go. When the government stepped into regulate education, that is when all the standards began to decline. Without discipline, respect and a free hand to teach, our education is doomed. And the No Child Left Behind debacle, well, that is another question here on SH. It began what was a bump in the road and worked it into a crater.
