Teacher caught yelling at a student for criticizing Obama is suspended. Right decision or wrong decision?

She deliberately misinformed her students by suggesting that people were arrested for speaking critically of a president. That's an absurd statement to make in a Social Studies class. Yes, I think there should have been a punishment.

These kids took an actual interest in her fact of the day and attempted to turn it into a genuine debate. Rather than engaging them in a genuine debate - she instructed them to dismiss facts relevant to her own and set an example of bias.

That's wrong. What she did here was fly a red-herring right in front of the students she's supposed to be teaching and worst of all - she used fear to stifle their curiosity / opinions. That is the exact OPPOSITE of what we should be teaching our kids. We should never submit to them that they should be AFRAID of questioning their leaders. It's just wrong wrong wrong.

The student probably knows more about the US Constitution than she does - he was exercising his 1st Amendment rights to Free Speech.

Do these teachers actually teach their students about freedom of speech and the right to express an opinion that isn't the same as theirs? or is that just a myth?

The school is a platform for learning and socializing with one another not a platform for debating, arguments or fighting in some cases......................... PBWY

The government run schools seem to think their mission is to churn out politically correct liberal drones, and to force teachers to pay union dues to get liberals elected.

Two things. It was the right decision if the teacher was over the top. Yet secondly, as much as I have no love for Obama and want him out of office, if that teacher is being suspended for trying to force her political views on a student, then perhaps a letter in her file would have been more appropriate.

Teachers should keep their political leanings the heck out of schools. It should be neutral ground.

SHe should have been suspended without pay. Instead she is getting paid to stay home and sit on her ass. Whats really sad is I believe they said she is a Social Studies teacher.

Teachers should never display their political opinions in a classroom. Never.

Nothing wrong with a political discussion as long as that discussion is open to ALL sides..

Right. Political discussion in the class is fine as long as all opinions are respected. However, I believe the teacher should act as a moderator and not favor one side over another. The teacher can eject facts into the discussion but not his/her opinion.

Agreed.. I might even go so far as to say that the teacher can interject an opinion,, to act as the devil's advocate,, if you will,, to spur on the debate..

But I think that we ALL agree that to express HER opinion and REFUSE to allow any other is NOT teaching.. It's Indoctrination...

He's a teenager - do you know any that aren't condescending? The fact that one of them even took notice of her "fact of the day" is a miraculous event in our school system.

They need to have a school wide assembly where she apologizes to the student, the student body, the parents and faculty and presents a report as to the importance of the First Amendment on top of her suspension. Otherwise she should be fired and thrown in prison for ever!!!

The teacher brought UP the subject and opened it to debate.. The student asked a pertinent question and the teacher freaked out..

She goes on to threaten the student??

If ANYTHING,, The punishment doesn't go far enough..

I realize our schools are teaching liberalism and so according to that the teacher did her job.

Right decision but doesn't go far enough. Someone like that should have a restraining order against her that prevents her from coming within 300 feet of anyone else's children!
