A teacher at Eustis Middle School in Florida resigned this week after the school launched an investigation into how she handled a student's "boobage" -- that is to say, how she apparently handled a student's excessive cleavage. According to the Orlando Sentinel, 53-year-old Joan Bannister pointed out a student's cleavage in class on January 30 and proceeded to measure it, eliciting a complaint from the student.

Bannister admitted to addressing the issue in the middle of class and measuring the "boobage," but denied using that word and claims she never touched the student. The district recommended a five-day unpaid suspension, but Bannister requested a hearing. On further consideration, she resigned prior to the hearing, which was scheduled for April 2. Do you think the teacher did anything wrong, or were her actions over said "cleavage" acceptable?

Apparently, teacher Bannister was trying to make a point as to who was the "biggest boob" in her classroom. She won hands-down!

Students are there to learn, not to show their various body parts. A female dressed as such would be a distraction to the male students.

How did that child get out of her home in the morning wearing inappropriate clothing? Once again teachers are required to do the job of parents. Sounds like the teacher did not deal with it very well, but if the parents would have done their job, the teacher could have done her job...that is TEACH! Too much of a teacher's job ends up with policing student behavior. It's sad that our society forces adult behavior on children too young to handle it through the bambardment of media.

You talk to the student after class, not by doing this and you definitely do not touch the student.

Then what the hell does "except able" mean? And my wife, who was a teacher for 7 years, said, "Oh yeah, i definitely have done that to a girl who had repeatedly worn clothes that revealed too much."

she went over the top with measuring it, but other than that it is perfectly acceptable for a teacher to call a girl out on too much cleavage.

Should have been handled privately, with parents and school leaders.

I think teachers have the right to tell a student they're dressed inappropriately; however, they do not have the right to touch the student, do I guess this all depends on what actually happened.

She "measured" them? Nevermind awkward, how about
"wrong?" I could see her maybe mentioning something IN PRIVATE, if the students attire was not appropriate. But, again that should be done in private and measuring them is definitely wrong!

If the parents don't teach children what is appropreate, then the teachers have to, simply because if they don't others will come to feel it is acceptable. Seriously, parent who let their kids go to school like they are going to a Meat Market, should be fined and punished for not taking care of their children.
  • Maiko Tom 2012/04/02 14:25:43

Agreed, however it still doesn't make it right for the teacher to measure them. Plus if she was not dressed appropriately she could have spoke to the student in private.

Well, how many teenagers do you know that will argue the point? They say, it's not exposed much, so the teacher show her 8 inches is over exposure. THe teacher did that instead of sending her to the principle's office and/or sent home and likely beaten by the parents.

I don't know. I don't think it really matters as long as she does her work and is not loud or disruptive in class, unless her boobs are spilling out of her top. I only finished highschool last year, and we wore uniforms, but the teachers still seemed more concerned on our hair, clothes and us chewing gum than actually teaching us something or helping us understand something they barely knew about. I think they need to get their god damn priorities straight.

While the cleavage issue should have been addressed rather than just leaving it alone (especially if it's against school dress code), that sort of reaction is just plain beyond acceptable.

i can definitely understand why she might measure it. In my school, to clarify acceptable dress, there are measurements that must be followed.
Shorts: no greater than 3.5" above the knee
Pants: no longer than 1" below the cuff of a short top sneaker
Hair: Cannot touch the collar of your shirt in a pullover OR no longer than 3" below the back of the head. (bobby pins, buns or braids may be used to prevent this no matter the sex) Whichever is longer.
Button ups: no more than 2 buttons undone OR no more than 2.5" below the collar may be exposed, whichever is shorter.
Every teacher had a ruler with them....

That's fair, some have expressed that a measurement is not the way to define the dress code at my school, but then what would you do? It's a tough issue.

    what would I do ?
well, first off , I hope I was not googling the minor's boob's in the first place.

but for any type of intervention with the young lady, I think it would be out of the classroom ( principal office ? ) and done by a female .

    just saying..
