Swine Flu: Conservatives Have Suggested the U.S. Should Close Its Borders Because of the Outbreak. Your take?

Grace W. Bush April 28, 2009 17:00:36

With new cases cropping up, the World Health Organization moves closer to declaring the swine flu outbreak a full-blown pandemic. With over 150 deaths in Mexico, 50 cases in the US (not fatal), and the swine flu spreading world wide -- many Conservatives suggest that closing the borders temporary is a step closer to the epidemic swine flu. What do you think?
Yes. The U.S. should close its borders until the swine flu is controlled.
No. Keep the borders open for now.

Leave the borders alone, We must find ways to protect ourselves without going nuts, Europe didn't close their borders why should we ? Get a handle on your crazy fear and hate, I've had it with the crazies in this country. Go to Gitmo and you will be safe unless they decide to torture you as we seem so able to do.

I would love to see the border closed, even for just a few days!!! It would be such an eye opener! The schools and welfare offices in the cities near the border, like Imperial Beach and San Antonio, would be half empty.

Well I think we should secure the borders to keep more than the flu out. Alllow for lawful commerce but, the borders need to be secure.

Obama insists on keeping the US Borders to Mexico open... refuses to even seal the US / Mexican Border temporarily...

In an article in the New York Times, as Obama has tried to do with Dictator run Countries and Terrorist Countries, Obama will negotiate and / or talk to the new Swine Flu Virus to see if he can come to terms with the Swine Flu's demands, "Our US Citizens life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness is expendable... We cannot afford to be discriminatory to any new forms of life... We must give the new Swine Flu Virus a chance to negotiate possible terms".

The libbies can use the swine flu to build the wall. Obama and thugs did not want a wall(wink wink) because they needed the latino votes to win office and also Bush wanted it. But NOW that you have the swine flu noone can blame you for what you really wanted.

The World Health Organization praised Mexico for closing the schools, restaurants, public transportation and non essential business and government offices. If Mexico is doing that, doesn't it stand to reason that we close our border?

No. Keep the borders open for now.

Cat's out of the bag - too late for a border closing to help stop the flu - it would be far more effective to know what else the people who died were sick with in addition to the flu, or what made them more vulnerable. TB? Pneumonia? What? It would be a huge step in the right direction to answer that, and on the news this evening, they said that not much useful information is forthcoming from Mexico. Testing the Mexican child that died in Texas could yield some answers.

Its the flu people. I think the general reaction by everyone has been way over the top. I understand that for children and the elderly, the flu can be fatal, but its still just the flu for crying out loud. A handful of people have died and the whole world is freaking out, guess how many people died in car accidents yesterday? Thousands, but no one talks about that anymore, its old hat. Lets all just step back and look at this realistically...its the flu, people will get sick, some will die because they didnt take care of it or couldnt, it is a terrible thing, but lets not shut down every school in Texas because of it. Sheesh.

Swine flu doesn't appear to be any more 'deadly' than the garden variety flu that happens every year.

But hey - close the damn border anyway.

I think it's idiotic. In the US, you have the resources to deal with the disease. 150 deaths out of the whole population of Mexico isn't even that high, plus they don't have the same medical resources. The media has blown this bloody thing waaay out of proportion. Conservatives are just falling for the fear tactics.

No, it really isn't. Explain how it could possibly be a reason to avoid having nationalized health care?

My point wasn't that at all, I was merely saying it's idiotic to think it's much of a threat. And idiotic to close the borders because of an illness that wouldn't end up doing much harm.

And idiotic to think that this isn't what happens with Socialized healthcare. The first lady to die went to 11 hospitals before they diagnosed or admitted her. Didn't you see the cartoon???

THAT is the problem with nationalized/universal/social... healthcare. It SUCKS...so epidemics like these get out of control when they shouldn't.

I live in Canada, darling, and the universal health care system works just fine. No one's died here yet, despite there being at least 13 confirmed cases.

Swine flu isn't an epidemic here, in fact, it's just as harmless as the regular flu. The only people likely to die from it are infants and the elderly and other such people with weaker immune systems. In Mexico it's a problem because they don't have the same medical resources, that's all.

It has absolutely nothing to do with universal health care, and universal health care is hardly the reason epidemics get out of hand. Blaming something like that on one thing doesn't work.

EDIT: And, honey, I don't get my news from the cartoons.

You know that is absolute nonsense.

The people with money go to private doctors for a REASON. In Canada, in Mexico and in ALL other socialist countries.

You obviously know very little about my country, darling. Do your research, we quite like our universal health care.

You make assumptions, sweetheart, and that's just not a very good thing. You think only rich people deserve medical attention? Then I'm glad you think what I wrote was "absolute nonsense" because you are obviously a very selfish person, and not worth my time.

Didn't say you said it, I asked the question.

And I'm saying not everyone has enough money to pay privately, without the government's help, many people would not be able to afford medical attention, myself included. And here's the thing, it's not just lazy people with no jobs that have little money, no, it's people like me that work two jobs so they can pay for school and make rent every month that can't afford it. Just because a person works hard doesn't mean they have money, does that mean they deserve less? Does that mean their health doesn't matter? No, if you think that, you're a moron.

And, honey, from what you've written, it's quite evident you think people should pay their own way, there-by me thinking you're selfish is hardly a wrong assumption.

Oh, and sweetheart? I'm not the one being the ass here, you are.
  • StarSpa... running... May 01, 2009 00:25:30
    StarSpangledGirl...A
People that can should pay their own way. And people that can't should rely on PEOPLE'S CHARITY...not the government.

However...charity should be a CHOICE...not an obligation. Most human beings are very giving...but try and take from them and they become selfish.

    HUGE DIFFERENCE.

Try studying BEHAVIOR and then you might get it.

    ;)

Honey, people are going to be selfish no matter what, but in our country, we believe in helping our fellow man, not every man for himself, as you folks seem to believe. I just finished an essay discussion how selfish the American society really is. Just because a person cannot afford medical treatment hardly means they don't deserve it, and you don't seem to understand that.

People's charity would never cover the costs of the medical care that most people couldn't afford, and that's the truth. Most human beings aren't nearly as charitable by choice as you might think. Most don't give a shit, but at least here we figure we may as well pay slightly higher taxes so that everyone benefits, instead of just a few.

This country shares EVERYTHING with everyone. We are extremely giving so where do you get off saying we are selfish Americans????

You are completely wrong. Look at ALL the charities we have and if we had more to give (if we paid less taxes) we would.

Giving? No more than any of the rest of the western world, hon. You don't even take care of your own people.

The number of charities hardly shows how generous a group of people or a society is.
