Sweden's Twitter Experiment: Good Idea or Recipe for Disaster?

For the last nine months, Sweden's official Twitter account (@Sweden) has been handed over to a new citizen each week as part of a social media experiment. But this week the experiment took a turn for the worse when 27-year-old Sonja Abrahamsson took the reigns and began tweeting about Jewish people, circumcision, nazis, and the holocaust. Yeah...

Abrahamsson wrote, "I just don't get why some people hates jews so much. Where I come from there is no jews. I guess its a religion. But why were the nazis talking about races? ... Once I asked a co-worker what a jew is. He was 'part jew,' whatever that means ... Whats the fuzz with jews. You can’t even see if a person is a jew, unless you see their penises, and even if you do, you can’t be sure!?" Needless to say, there was some outrage. But does this reflect poorly on Sweden's experiment, or does it still have value?

Is it a good idea only if everyones says proper things? The very energy of a national rumbling is an indication of life. It's great, vigorous, lively, irresitably interesting - of course those qualities aren't 4 every1

At least it cuts through all the PC mind control crap that the thought police media have imposed upon us. It reminds me of that wonderful quote wrongly attributed to Voltaire; "I don't like what you say, but I defend to the death your right to say it".

I don't see the problem, really. The original intention, I assume, was to get the voice of the people heard, a random sampling of those willing to put their opinions online. When you give that kind of freedom, there are obviously going to be posts that not everyone agrees with.

This woman was speaking her mind. Nothing wrong with that. And when your government gift wraps a way to speak your mind to a larger audience, what are you supposed to do, change who you are? Of course not, you continue to speak you mind. She's not representing Sweden, she's representing herself. If the purpose was to represent Sweden, then they could have done it just as well by themselves.

The point is, this experiment represents Sweden as a whole. you take the tweets and look at them on average. When you look at them individually, then you are taking it upon yourself to look at the individual, not the country. You can't call off an experiment such as this because of one person you disagree with. Even if the entire country disagrees with you and agrees with her, that's a successful experiment, and a big red light on how the country is turning out, since the government is obviously not in the best interest of the people of the time.

It was a good idea before, and it still is. Just let it run its course.

According to whom, MJM? You? As a voice crying in the wilderness, this 5-word diatribe of yours reminds me of the old question, if a tree falls in a forest with no-one to hear it, does it still make a noise? I doubt that your little, pithy comment will create the same amount of attention. Sorry...

The only true semites are ARABS and Sephardim Jews. Khazaria is situated in Eastern Europe where even AshkeNAZI "Jewish" historians can trace their lineage to. There is no link to "Israel" whatsoever. Anti-semitism is so very typically overrated. One more fringe knee jerk reaction group with a penchant for self-indulgence.

I understand WHY you named yourself with another name for Devil. I suppose you are also one of those individuals that don't believe the Holocaust ocurred, either. I think our Jewish friends have a reason to hold up the death camps, and such. Especially those who have numbered tattoos on their forearms! True, Israel IS a state, but it is also a state of mind for many Jews.

I think it's a good idea. It gives anyone a chance to speak their mind (however dull-witted) and be heard by many for a day.

Hopefully Sweden won't let one fool ruin for everyone.

So you support censorship? Because that's what you're proposing. It was supposed to be a Swedish citizen giving their thoughts, and that's what they got. The next person will have something else to say. So you think censoring by picking people who only say what the government wants them to say sounds interesting? That is probably what they will do and it will be so boring.
  • Emily B... actionjksn 2012/06/15 07:14:08

But what about if the next person who has the account is racist? Or anti-semetic?

Then I guess the world will know what they are. And that person will have to live with all the crap that they get from angry people. Take our first amendment for instance. The founding fathers didn't add that to make sure people could say popular things that everybody likes. Those things don't need protected, that isn't the type of speech that gets banned. I'm sure there will be plenty of people who will say things that you think are great and don't find offensive. While other people will find those very same things offensive. If somebody says "we need to have a Communist world government" Well I find that to be extremely offensive. But they have a right to say their opinion Even though I would like to bust their head. And would laugh my ass off if I found out somebody actually did.

I'm still laughing at this! Sonja reminds me of Gilda Radner's character in Saturday Night Live playing Rosanne Rosanna Danna going off on a different subject each week. One was the amount of "violins" on TV. This is great! Jews by the way are circumcised at a special ceremony. Muslims also believe in circumcision as well as far too many doctors in America where it is done right after birth in a hospital. Where is that twitter account for the US?! I have a few things to twitter about circumcision and the right of the person to decide not their parents or medical staff!

By the way, in case there are people unaware of the process, this is the procedure for men, for both the reason of health, and religion. However, there are some tribes in Africa that perform a similar operation on young girls. There is now a world-wide campaign to stop this practice for girls, as being detrimental to the physical and mental health of the girls.

Nothing she said was really against Jews, just that she really didn't know why all the hate and how you can even tell who's a Jew and who's not, because even circumcision isn't a sure way of knowing, lol. I say she either really doesn't know, or she was trolling the world and won.

It's not a terrible idea, good PR for them. One bad egg might rotten the whole thing though. 27? and you don't know who jews are? It didn't sound anti-semetic it sounds like a really confused 5 year old. She probably needs help crossing the street.
  • darazan moviebuff 2012/06/14 23:33:21

Well, you have to understand. This is a 27 year old woman in Sweden. I don't know what all the curricula in schools are in Sweden, or even where she's from in the country. And if you never encounter a specific ethnic/religious group where you are, all they are is names to you. If you've never seen a Ukrainian, you're probably not going to be able to pick out features of their language, mannerisms, religion, or facial structure and body type. You just wouldn't know how to tell them apart from other people.

To me, Sonja either genuinely does not know and was curious, or was totally trolling and got a really great reaction from people half a world away from her.

It will liven things up. I find this one entertaining. It doesn't seem to be anti-semitic in any particular way--and penises ARE a fact of life. It is true that if one looks at enough of them, the circumcised ones won't all be Jews.
