Sweden's Twitter Experiment: Good Idea or Recipe for Disaster?

For the last nine months, Sweden's official Twitter account (@Sweden) has been handed over to a new citizen each week as part of a social media experiment. But this week the experiment took a turn for the worse when 27-year-old Sonja Abrahamsson took the reigns and began tweeting about Jewish people, circumcision, nazis, and the holocaust. Yeah...

Abrahamsson wrote, "I just don't get why some people hates jews so much. Where I come from there is no jews. I guess its a religion. But why were the nazis talking about races? ... Once I asked a co-worker what a jew is. He was 'part jew,' whatever that means ... Whats the fuzz with jews. You can’t even see if a person is a jew, unless you see their penises, and even if you do, you can’t be sure!?" Needless to say, there was some outrage. But does this reflect poorly on Sweden's experiment, or does it still have value?

I mean, there also was that dude that tweeted about how he masturbates in the winter. Or did we forget that guy?

But I'm all for it. We can totally see what the country's people are up to. I wish we had one, that'd be the best. If I got it, half of my tweets would be like "HAMBURGERS!!! BEEER!!!! USA USA USA WASSSUUUUP!!!" >:D

I think its a good idea but the ppls tweets should be reviewed so Sweden isnt seen in a bad light.

then what would be the point of the experiment if you have the government looking over your shoulder?

If they are concerned about their country's image , then it would be in Sweden's best intrest.

this is true I like that idea, screen them before posting. Totally and if it is successful then yeah It would be neat for every culture to do this.

but if the government is screening the tweets, you're not really getting a fair view of the cizitens, and you might as well just have some government agent use twitter. why the censorship?

true true but as with any thing lol we sometimes seem to want both sides of the fence lol. but lol I would love to see what our citizens would say.

In any other geographical area of the planet the experiment would had exposed much more extremist entries in the first week.

Even if you have a few idiots, the idea gives a display of the disparate viewpoints presented in Swedish society, while some are far from politically correct it doesn't invalidate the experiment.

She doesn't sound racist or anything. She's just asking what the big deal is. Also, that was a neat idea to let the people take turns operating Sweden's Twitter account. There's going to always be some people that lack social etiquette.

    Swedes can be dumb as all people..she's young and ignorant...Nothing wrong with Jews;
if you look at history (modern) many invented good things, smart, biz oriented..all good things..people say "they stick together" i say so? is that a bad thing? since when?..families should stick together! and most do..so why not a people? all peoples do that..but maybe not enough..Hatred usually start from ENVY..the Jews rallied, became successful, and people are envious...besides that they didn't do crap wrong..all countries had wars and bought/occupied lands..The whole America started that way..even "Native Americans" came from Norther Asia..in vessels..you're supposed to live and let live, forget the past, enjoy, live, help others..be prepared for natural disasters, don't just hope and rely on the GOVERNMENT to save you! that's ridiculous, you saw too many unrealistic Hollywood films..Be responsible for yourself, your family, friends, & neighbors

I do blame her for her ignorance, she has the freaking internet my lord all she has to do is research before opening her mouth and removing all doubt. Or go to her history teacher LOL, guess she skipped that class. I mean my lord some people think it is cute to look stupid. Even though I am a female. I will say females will do it in a heart beat. way to dumb the females down young lady. Swedens are very smart people, invented a lot of things. SWEDENS did invent things. And I say this for one particular type of people. Since I have learned all races have been blamed for stealing everything that has been invented in history from them.

Heh. Well American women have a huge problem with this. I don't get what's it with this "being dumb is in" thing. Though look at the current american generation of children. It's pretty pathetic when a teacher introduces a vet from WWII as being from "World war 11". Hell what's worse is this preppy chick behind me in my junior said, "who cares about some dead photographers," I wanted to slap the fire out of her... =_= but this is the new "normal".

Are you serious? Swedes are extremely well-read. We learn about all the big religions in school. I'm sure she was a drop-out or skipped a lot of classes. No one is that ignorant because of the government. I'm Swedish, and I bet I could beat pretty much any American at geography AND religion ;) All countries have a few dumb people, and Abrahamsson happened to be one of them.

Thank you for setting me straight on that. I've never been to Sweden, but some of the Swedes I've met weren't very intelligent.

Americans don't learn very much in school. Most of the schools in the United States are mostly focused on comprehensive testing and beating countries in that aspect than actually teaching something. In high school, my teachers were more worried about getting through the main points of the test they were preparing for than actually teaching history.

;) I bet I could at get on par with you when dealing with religion and geography.

Well, you can't judge a whole project based on a dumb or two you're going to find.

I'd also like to mention, I don't think she was being necessarily mean, or racist (not on purpose at least), but rather just asking for dumb questions. And as some said, no country is dumb-free.

I see nothing wrong with Sonja's tweets. She said nothing against Jews. Circumsition is a Jewish custom and many people have talked about it, pro and con. She said nothing to promote Nazis. Leave her alone.

Can't judge someone for being dense.
    I don't think she meant harm, she's just, well - STUPID :)

Don't punish all potential participants because 1-2 are stupid.
It happens, no country is dummy-free.

yes she does show she is dense. But again we dont know what area she lives in, Or is she sheltered growing up, could be lots of reasons. But all more reason for us to learn as a example research before putting it out there.

    Don't agree.
We always make so much more fuss abt irrelevant things.
It was a stupid remark by a girl that was clearly not thinking.
She IS a part of her country, along with her remark. It simply shows that the education sys should be altered, and if they do smth abt it - then her tweeting was a positive thing..

Or are we going to put beautiful skinny actors in front and hide all the rest, like the US does?

It's interesting, but it will never end well. You just know some idiot is going to get really offended and blame the entire country for what one person says. Not gonna lie, I don't see the point either, but if they like doing it, that's fine. Still a recipe for disaster, though. I'd like to think it'd go fine, but we all know how immature people can be :/
