Sweden's Twitter Experiment: Good Idea or Recipe for Disaster?

For the last nine months, Sweden's official Twitter account (@Sweden) has been handed over to a new citizen each week as part of a social media experiment. But this week the experiment took a turn for the worse when 27-year-old Sonja Abrahamsson took the reigns and began tweeting about Jewish people, circumcision, nazis, and the holocaust. Yeah...

Abrahamsson wrote, "I just don't get why some people hates jews so much. Where I come from there is no jews. I guess its a religion. But why were the nazis talking about races? ... Once I asked a co-worker what a jew is. He was 'part jew,' whatever that means ... Whats the fuzz with jews. You can’t even see if a person is a jew, unless you see their penises, and even if you do, you can’t be sure!?" Needless to say, there was some outrage. But does this reflect poorly on Sweden's experiment, or does it still have value?

Clearly the results of the experiment will vary. And when participating in an experiment true data is the most valuable. Perhaps Sweden will utilize their findings and make the appropriate adjustments to education, culture, etc.

A great idea that could have its days of disaster. Would be very interesting to see it rolled out across more countries...

If you can't handle the fire get out! This is indeed an experiment and sonja is a very blunt woman who's not afraid to say what's on her mind.

What is the fuss all about??? Following the stream of conscious, this writer has a few valid points, even if it is presented in a vapid manner. Are we really surprised by her lack of knowledge? Of course, she could open a book to answer her own question. However, what makes this a 'recipe for disaster'? That hyperbole is out of order...

Any country would eventually be embarrassed by what some of their people have to say when given the chance. This is a dramatic change from being embarrassed by what their leaders have to say.

If we ask if this was a good idea, I say it was a GREAT idea. Great idea in terms of twitter measurements. Frankly, I don't know or care what they were trying to accomplish but in twitter terms it was a massive success. Here we are, talking about it. WIN!!

Interesting. And she is apparently asking questions she does not know the answer to. Did a "part jew" actually talk about jews as well educated rather than as a religion? I don't see what she said as malicious; maybe naive but then she is probably not alone. So kick off a dialog about it. That's good.

Why is there such an over the top reaction when someone asks why do people hate Jews? Maybe she just wanted an answer as to why they have been thrown out of this many places.

Can, at least, be a good idea... might lend a different perspective on a service such as Twitter from the people who use it... and one person holding the reigns and screwing up shouldn't bring disaster...

...yet, can bring disaster.... when a whole bunch of offended people react and take action... Non-professionals don't necessarily know the legal ins and outs of such a position.. that is why so many execs have PR people working for them... a group that writes their public statements, and people that know what should be said and what shouldn't be said... what statements are good for business and which are not...

Perhaps I should rethink my vote? LOL...

A gut, off the cuff response obviously is, how can a 27 year old be so ignorant? Yet, we are all ignorant about something or other, and there is at least a whole generation who have been taught not to talk about differences (gender, ethnicity, race, religion, and so on), and therefore are ignorant as to the very basics of other people. Some places are worse than others of course, as some places have swallowed political correctness whole.

This woman, Sonja Abrahamsson, whose last name is certainly a tip of the hat to the Old Testament, knowledge of who Jewish people are is limited to penises, and her understanding of the National Socialist German Workers' Party that dominated continental Europe during her grandparents' lifetime is completely absent. The only way she is going to learn is by asking questions, and being given answers, and by having dialogues with other people. Belly aching about her ignorance does not fix the problem. So, this was a move in the right direction for her, and perhaps people in her country.

    However...

POE == "Parody Of Evangelical" iirc. That term is based on a very American (US) bigotry -- the idea that Evangelicals==uneducated (among other things). Does Sweden have a similar cultural idea? We may even be projecting the idea of parody...

Sometimes it is hard to admit that people really are incredibly ignorant.

She is Swedish an does not know a thing about the National Socialist German Workers' Party. How is that even possible? Did she receive a formal education, or did she grow up on a fishing boat? That said, I would also believe she knows nothing about Jewish people either if that is the case. Abrahamsson does not reflect that she is in anyway of Jewish descent. It looks similar, but is not related in the way you are suggesting.

    What is a POE?
