A new hacking trend is surging within the United States and Canada and it’s proving to be more costly than ever.

Called
“Swatting,” the latest hacking trend involves hackers breaking into
people’s phones to make prank 911 calls that sound violent enough to
dispatch a SWAT team. The SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team
arrives to the address provided by the hacker and breaks in just to find
people shocked, confused, and extremely terrified for having various
men point automatic weapons at them.

One incident involved a
15-year-old boy from Naples, Fla., Hunter Gelinas. According to ABCNews,
he had his X-Box hacked by swatters who sent a message to the police
saying Hunter was stabbed and his family members were being held
hostages.

When the SWAT team had finally arrived to the scene,
they found Hunter coming out of his room. When the teen noticed all the
guns, he thought “I’m going to die.”

These prank calls do not only make way for innocent people to suffer accidents but according to ABCNews, they can be costly too.

The media outlet reported that costs of dispatching a SWAT team at one location can average $10,000.

There are reported to be several dozens of swatting prank calls made every month in the U.S. and Canada.

In this day and age of expert hackers, track the SOB's down and make them pay dearly for such foolishness. Dangerous foolishness at that. Generally SWAT teams are well trained and disciplined; however, you cannot predict what a civilian will do. I know if I were ultra scared and had a weapon available and they came breaking into my home, I might shoot first and ask questions later. Somebody could get seriously hurt or killed. What is the matter with these jackasses these days? There is not one thing funny about this particular "prank," nothing at all. So what "reward" do the bums get, I ask you.

This is a favored tactic of the lefties now and they use it against conservative commentators.

Interesting. I never cared for pranks. Don't like humor at someones expense. And involving law enforcement is stupid and should be punished.

The man behind the trend is Obama....

If the AG and Obama can flaunt the law, little punk hackers subconsciously feel they are above the law too... it's the Obama lawlessness society.

How in the hell can dispatching a SWAT team cost $10,000??? Do they put new uniforms on and use brand new weapons every time they get a call? If so just goes to show government waste runs deeper then you think.

"How in the hell can dispatching a SWAT team cost $10,000???"

Maybe they are including the cost of calling in an air-strike from the cobra gun-ship hovering just down the street.

Over Kill? Nah…You gotta have that kinda firepower available when dealing with some punk kid making prank calls... or his 80y/o glaucoma patient grannie that may have a couple of ‘ganja’ roach's stuck down in the bottom of her bong pipe in her living room. Ya' never know when the kid making the prank calls might get violent...or his drug crazed grannie attacks the swat team with her walker or cane! We can’t tolerate such threats like this to society!

And if the gunship isn't sufficient in eradicating these criminal prank callers or drug crazed law breakers...

SWAT's normally do have some form of air cover, be it a tactical helo or a standard SAR, or police helo.

Obviously this is a troubling trend and should be further investigated. But really, $10k for sending a van w/4 guys with assault rifles? Are they shooting 24kt bullets?
  • Lanikai BlueRep... 2012/07/10 15:39:15

They vehicles barely get 8 MPG. It is normally at least 8-10 responders, PLUS a host of local police and sheriffs and ambulances and para/fire/rescue staged nearby-also about 8MPG, plus manpower and overtime for some. Plus the helicopter.Locally, if SWAT is deployed, a helicopter is always up as well for air support in case the criminals run or flee.

    VERY expensive.
