Completely unconstitutional. SCOTUS cannot institute a tax, neither can POTUS. Bad law, worse medicine. Welcome to the USSA, comrades!

I would have preferred this remain a state issue personally ~ Certain states have it certain states dont- gives the people much more of a say the more 'local' it stays especially on an issue like this

only slightly because even though this allows Obamacare to stay it will eventually need to be overturned to allow universal healthcare like the Canadians have. Although the obvious loophole is allow universal healthcare for everyone and increase the cost for those who opt out of the insurance.

It won't have to be overturned, just replaced. There's nothing in the law that prevents a better one from existing.

Not since the 1973 Roe v Wade decision has the US Supreme Court so miserably and utterly failed in its duty to uphold the Constitution and protect the rights of individuals. Whereas Roe v Wade was the death knell for over 50 million pre-born people, the Court’s decision to let stand Obamacare is the death knell for the American healthcare system and, ultimately, life as we know it in this country. Eventually private insurance companies will go bankrupt by being forced to accept those who for instance, have just been diagnosed with cancer. That, in turn will lead to a single payer (government) program, further eroding our freedom to choose our health care providers and services. Our economy will suffer (even more) as billions of dollars get sucked out of the private sector in order to feed the already bloated pig that is the Federal government. And, let us not forget the fact that now the Feds can “tax” us for not eating tofu or not joining a health spa or not buying an electric car or whatever the nannies in Washington conger up.
The ultra-left in this country has found a way to further deprive us of our freedom, either by forcing us to purchase something against our will or by taking our money if we refuse. There are two main groups of people who will opt to pay the pen...

There are two main groups of people who will opt to pay the penalty rather than buy insurance. Conservatives, Tea Partiers, Libertarians and the like will not bend to this type of tyranny. So the money Leftists can’t get through union dues they can now get through draconian penalties while at the same time depriving many who are opposed to their ideology of the resources to fight against them. Then there are the ones who will pay the fine because it is cheaper than insurance. And when they need expensive healthcare they will simply buy insurance at that time (remember, no refusing coverage for pre-existing conditions). As I mentioned earlier, this will at once drive private insurers out of business while at the same time fund an inefficient, impersonal, one-size-fits-all, big government system.
So, what’s a country to do? Fortunately, our system is not totally broken (even though it may be broke). We can now set our sights on the coming elections in November. We can hope and pray and fight to bring our nation back to some semblance of sanity. We can pick up the ball that the US Supreme Court has so supremely dropped. We can shake off the bonds of tyranny by ousting those in Congress and the White House who would subjugate us rather than support our freedoms. We can raise our voices in outrage and indignation until this evil is repealed. We can turn this temporary setback into permanent good by finally waking up to our responsibilities as citizens of a free country and furiously fight for and tenaciously hold onto our liberties. And in the months and years to come, after the dust of this epic battle has long settled and our rights have once again been restored, we can remember what we almost lost. And we can vow to never, ever let ourselves come this close to the brink of destruction again. We can. Yes, we can.

Those private insurance companies deserve to go bankrupt, for raping the american people. It should have been single payer from the start, but of course, the retardlicans wouldn't let that happen, so we get this. Screw the insurance companies. You must enjoy paying for the mansions of the corporate officers, don't you?

Ah, so let's have Big Brother rape us instead? Of course, no one ever forced you to buy private insurance (until now). So, you of all people should be outraged that the US government will be FORCING you to patronize those rapists at the private ins cos. Then again, being a liberal, you'd rather your neighbor pay for your health care. Typical.

typical, yet another right winger without a clue. the new regulations will minimize the rape, and will soon usher in single payer healthcare. the most ludicrous part about all this right wing hysteria is that this is YOUR PLAN! the heritage foundation created this in the 90's, in response to hillary care. then it became romney care. your hypocrisy is laughable.

I wholeheartedly disagree. There are parts of the Act that are worthwhile and should be used for reform, however, fining people for not having it is basically having your Government dictate to you that you should buy something or else.
Also, as of right now, there is nothing stopping anyone from going out and shopping for healthcare insurance, it's only the BS clauses that a lot of companies add in that prevent people from getting it.

Where was this screaming over Citizens United? GE is now 'person'. Can it get a speeding ticket? Have a baby? No. Can it anonymously donate all it wants to Super PACs.....yes. Elections will now cost billions, with everybody kissing corporate booty for their cash, and tying on the strings.

You'll be paying higher taxes all right, because the super wealthy and corps won't, and you can't lay that on Obama, as much as you'd like to. Another great SCOTUS move.

-Now the government can force you to buy an electric car by GM or pay a massive tax.
-Now the government can force you to work out at a gym or pay a massive tax,
-Now the government can force you to eat foods they approve of or pay a massive tax.
-Now the government can tax you based on the out dated Body Mass Index if they think you are too fat. They now can force you to diet!
-Now the government can control what you grow in your backyard veggie garden.
-Now there is no end to what the government can do to you as long as they tax it.

Justice Roberts is a coward and a spineless weasel. He has just opened the door to even bigger government intrusion in your life and less individual liberty . He has now voted for the biggest judicial mistake made by the SCOTUS since Plessy v. Fergusson.

Enjoy the tax increase and the fact that the IRS is going to be a much more powerful agency to the point they will be the New Gestapo.

Not how I see it. At least I hope that you are wrong. Ann Althouse is a law professor with a blog who says:
"Let's not be distracted by the breadth of the taxing power. The American people exert tremendous political power against taxing. Look at the Tea Party. A political price will be paid — both for the tax and the deceit about imposing a tax."
    http://althouse.blogspot.com/...

By making it clear that this is a tax, Roberts makes it clear that government can not do this under the Commerce Clause that liberals think apply to everything.

The Supreme Court has Ordered us to live by NoBama's ideologies, now we need to demand the they and the government supply ours.

They better provide employment pay raised 30 percent so we can afford this damned health care. I'm a college graduate and companies don't hardly want to pay anything.

Justice Roberts just did the Republicans a huge favor. He insured a win in November. Now we will have the POTUS, House and Senate.

You see, the TAX mandate is not collectable or enforceable and the single biggest, least wanted tax to ever be created. 70% of Americans DON'T want the mandate and as a tax they will HATE IT.

The States don't have to comply with expansion. SO they will get their funding even when they refuse to expand medicare and medicade. There goes the ability to make States comply and kills the funding issue.

Thanks Justice Roberts, you just became my new hero.

This makes Romney a shoe in for POTUS.

You don't understand. The law was ruled constitutional because it is the equivalent of and enforced through the tax system. There is NO ADDITIONAL TAX for those who have insurance. And there are subsidies for those who can't afford it. The penalty/tax is only for those who can afford it but refuse to do so.

The law itself didn't change due to the Supreme Court ruling.

It's the principle. These people now know that power can be taken from the people and that's what is going to be our undoing, this is no small matter.

The fact that the government and high court systems can impose laws against the people's wishes is what will compel them to go even further in their aggression towards us and the U.S. Constitution. When we cease to have power of self determination we are setting ourselves up for an undeterred dictatorship or socialist society where we have no stock in American/global going-ons, and our vote nor opinion matters.
