Supreme Court Health Care Ruling: CNN, Fox News Wrong On Individual Mandate

Stupidity from Faux News and Faux News-Lite

CNN and Fox News were left with egg on their faces on Thursday, as they got the Supreme Court's ruling on President Obama's health care law wrong — and even managed to make Obama initially think his health care law had been partially overturned.

The trouble started early for CNN. Congressional correspondent Kate Boulduan read out part of the Court's ruling, which said that the individual mandate could not be upheld using the Commerce Clause. Disastrously, though, it failed to pick up the other part of the ruling, which said that it could be upheld as a tax.

"Wow, that's a dramatic moment," Wolf Blitzer said, as a chyron saying "SUPREME CT. KILLS INDIVIDUAL MANDATE" flashed on the screen.

"The Justices have just gutted, Wolf, the centerpiece provision of the health care law," John King said, adding that it was a "direct blow to President Obama."

Later, Boulduan returned to correct the initial report. She said that the Court had released a "very confusing large opinion" and that on the second read, it was apparent that the network had gotten it wrong. "The entire law has been upheld, Wolf," she said.

Anything is going to be "very confusing" when you don't bother to read it. From Fox I am not surprised at any of the crap they post. This is the network that said that Arizona "won" on the SB 1070 ruling even though most of the law was struck down and the court all but said that the remaining part will be struck down as soon as its implemented. This is also that network that has called Mark Foley, Mark Sanford and even John McCain Democrats, and just for fun moved Egypt to Iraq.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised at CNN doing the same thing, but I guess I still hoped that there was some integrity left over there. After all, they DID can Lou Dobbs. But I guess that was asking for too much.

I guess the funniest part is that we all know that if this had been a Republican President and this happened we would be hearing nothing right now except the "Vast Liberal Media Conspiracy to Destroy the First Amendment and Take Over Our Lives"

John King: "The Justices have just gutted, Wolf, the centerpiece provision of the health care law . . . a direct blow to President Obama."

so, if gutting the bill would have been a "direct blow" what is upholding it? a direct endorsement?
    just askin.

Fox news needs to be fined with every false report they put out to the public. It's embarrassing what they can get away with.

Not unusual for those two sources to prematurely call something erroneously. The urge to be first overtook their sanity apparently. Great that their momentary glee turned to a big bad surprise for Faux News though.

You do realize by using a word complicated by so many vowels like "erroneously" you'll have many a RWNJ feverishly scrambling in a mad panic trying to figure out if you just insulted em don't you? That's good, because they won't even notice my run on sentence! ;-)

Possibly because so much of the majority opinion read like the dissenting opinion and vise versa; on top of that pretty much everyone expected the individual mandate to be struck down.

I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist but something seemed to have happened at the last minute.

The vote was 5-4; Roberts was obviously the deciding vote. He voted in favor of the constitution and not corporate goons on this one.

I wondered when the right wing conspiracy theorists would arrive on the scene.

Actually Obamacare helps the health insurance companies gain more revenue by forcing people to purchase health insurance; this does very little to actually fix the problem of the broken health care system in this country but does plenty to like the pockets of insurance companies.

Giving more Americans access to health care is a positive step; the best way to go is a single payer universal health care system. We'll get there.

What evidence do you have that the national approach is the best one when so many other nations utilize a decentralized approach with the national government merely providing guidance?

Let's see; France's national health care system is often rated the best in the world.
  • kir JaguarS... 2012/06/29 13:51:46
    kir
France's system is rated high, but it's costs are astronomical and the program constantly runs deficits which adds to the already burdened French economy. Now compare that with Finland which generally ranks high in the world in all socialized programs yet seems to have lower costs; why is that?

However, not a single sane French citizen woudl trade their system for ours. It's way past time the U.S. had a single payer universal health care system.
  • kir JaguarS... 2012/06/29 13:55:10
    kir
But they may indeed trade it for Finland's. I'm not saying that we should keep our current system; I'm not sure if you're half blind or simply can't read; I want to move us towards a Finnish style system combined with community based programs.

Maybe John Roberts developed a conscience?
  • kir ProudPr... 2012/06/29 02:26:28

It's not just that it was a conservative that was the deciding vote but also the fact that it was almost certain that the mandate would be struck down and the fact that the wording sounds like items were switched at the last minute.
  • JaguarS... kir 2012/06/29 02:56:47

What leads you to believe that?
  • kir JaguarS... 2012/06/29 04:24:21
    kir
Just certain aspects of the opinions; for instance Roberts first calls the mandate a penalty rather than a tax and then later seems to change his mind calling it a tax.

Roberts' reasoning is pretty clear on this issue.
  • kir JaguarS... 2012/06/29 13:56:39
    kir
No it's not. First he says that the mandate is a penalty not a tax and then he says it's a tax. It's weird.

Either way, so much for no new taxes on the middle class; this will be one of the largest tax hikes on the middle class seen in a long time.
  • JaguarS... kir 2012/06/29 21:33:46

Nothing weird about it; Roberts was right to vote in favor of upholding the law.
  • kir JaguarS... 2012/06/30 02:00:59

I disagree, but if that's the case then Obama was wrong to lie about not having new taxes on the middle class.

It used to be a pretty good news network but, in recent years, they've gone downhill especially with Blitzer. Soledad O'Brien, today, downplayed Repubdungbagger obstructionism on immigration. CNN has become, as I mentioned, Faux News-Lite. How do you like Anderson Cooper?
