Newsflash America...this economic downturn from the last few years has another, delayed consequence that is going to hit hard in the years to come....many of the long term unemployed have exhausted their retirment savings trying to stay alive over these last few years...they turned to using retirement savings when the unemployment ran out fro example....so there's a boatload of people out there who will not be able to retire and/or will become a big problem for society/government to have to deal with in the future....

Trying to live my life as full as I can and master something I love to do. As opposed to working for the vast majority of my life until I am old, withered, obsolete, and they say I can 'retire' to start 'really living'.

I was ...and thought I had enough........until OBAMA came along....
they claim no inflation.........yet Gasoline has almost doubled
yet all types of food have nearly doubled
My State and county taxes go up,..and they claim its because the fed isnt helping
    them enough.
My utility bills have all gone up..electricity is higher, water is higher
because obama wants to close Coal fired power plants...and go EXPENSIVE GREEN...
My health insurance at work costs much more....they claim its because obamacare
has added dependants up to 26 yrs old..who dont even have to live in the same home..
and when the rest of Obamacare kicks in ..it will go higher..

For a fact, I am not. In fact, I'm not even sure I'm saving enough for bubble-gum sometimes. Parenting two teenagers - both in JV water polo and drivers' ed, plus one in college til God dies, plus my nephew who is just starting out (also til God dies), and me with one more year of college myself? Bubble-gum might be a rare luxury...someday - lol.

In all seriousness, though - I think this failed "tax the rich" policy is really hurting a lot of people. Not only is my current employer edgy about growth and limiting raises and promotions even though she knows it could hurt her, but other employers are wary of hiring the qualified people they need because of the boogeyman under the bed Obama created. I almost don't care who is running, and would probably vote for Howdy-Doody just to get Obama out of office.

I have a 'nest egg'. By the time I die I'll probably have run through most of it, but that's not so bad. My ambition is I 'aint punching a clock on my dying day.

The stock market manipulation of 2008 ate a big chunk of mine. See I did save a little each week for years. But the banksters were smarter than I.

I am "retired" and I still work. "Retired" is just means you stop doing your regular job and start doing something a little easier and less regimented. Your sad ass was marked for "labor" while the Romneys of the world go on making more millions with there money. God bless the job makers!!!

With the cost of living on the rise & raising kids how can you afford to put back enough money to save for retirement.

Make YOURSELF priority one. That's not just words. Make a budget, stick to it and be sure you pay yourself (by savings) every pay period. Even a little helps. Everyone can cut back on something they really don't need to spend on. Eating out less, or at less expensive restaurants, clothes, entertainment, even buying smarter at the grocery store all can add to savings and it does add up.

I'm at a point in my life I don't care or need to worry what anything costs. That's because I was a cheapsake in my younger years and did without. Now when I have time to enjoy life, it is sweeter than it would have been if I had like so many do spend beyond their means when younger.

I completely agree, i do without plenty & i do have a small retirement set up currently but I also put a little aside whenever i can for later on. Believe it or not i save a $1 a day in change every day for the past number of years & have had the opportunity to cash in a few times for luxury vacations and this has nothing to do with my IRA or 401k, I have a budget for the house i try to stick with but unfortuneatley some expensive come up that cannot be avoided.

I have used all my savings trying to keep my business open in these tough economic times. SO, no, I am not. I am trying to hold onto the business we spent 15 years building and the damnable dems have spent 3.5 destroying.

I hope to die with $0 in assets. Leaving a bunch of assets on the table when you die is a waste. If I haven't given it to my kids, hopefully I've given it to charity. I have enough to live on now, my goal is to eliminate debts so that I don't need a bunch of assets that might wind up on the table.

I have been blessed financially and I have enough money to live on for the rest
of my life. I have given all my life to help people and God has rewarded me both
monetarily and in every way imaginable. :-)

This is a great post Shepard as it enlightens us all to the importance of saving money
and being prepared when the unforeseen circumstances happens in our lives.
Everyone should have a nest egg and a emergency fund to fall back on.

I started when i was 15, i don't expect many of the generation X and later folks will get anything from the government.

I could subsist off of what i have saved for the next 5 years at 30K a year and have some left over. But i won't spend any of it until i retire.

Don't worry. after stealing all your SS they will find a way to steal whatever you have left.
