Teacher Tells Student it’s a Crime to Criticize President Obama

The First Amendment was mandated by the states to protect political speech. The colonists wanted the freedom they didn’t have in England to speak freely about what political leaders were doing. They also wanted to be free to write about what they believed were wrong-headed policies without fear of reprisals. In addition, they insisted on the freedom to “petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

The First Amendment was a freedom breakthrough, but you would never know that if you were a student in one North Carolina classroom.

I am not sure she is the example of the majority. However, I will concede that most High School classes, at least, leave very little room for a good debate on such issues. It is generally verbatim textbook teaching. I am very glad to see a group of High School students who are showing an interest in, and some knowledge about, our current political climate. It makes me consider re-evaluating my thoughts on today's youth.

I agree that there are still those who will question what a teacher tells them, but the majority just take whatever the teacher says as fact, without checking things out for themselves. That give the teachers enormous potential to influence what their students believe.
