Student Kicked Out of College After Watching 'Glee': Fair or Foul?

Chris Peterman, a 23-year-old senior at Bob Jones University in South Carolina, was reportedly kicked out of school for watching an episode of "Glee." And he wasn't watching it in class, in his dorm, or anywhere on campus. He was watching it on his laptop at Starbucks. According to Jezebel, he had accumulated a handful of write-ups for 1) trying to start a group "aimed at ending sexual abuse," 2) showing up late to his dorm and 3) not shaving. The school says "Glee" was not the reason they expelled him, but Peterson says it was the last straw.

glee

Bob Jones students are not permitted to watch television on campus, and while off campus there are still guidelines they must abide by. The handbook reads, "Students are to avoid any types of entertainment that could be considered immodest or that contain profanity, scatological realism, sexual perversion, erotic realism, lurid violence, occultism and false philosophical or religious assumptions." Do you think it was fair for the school to kick Peterson out?

    What 'Glee' are they watching?

Pretty much any episode... Not that I care, but if you have't noticed that it's a primarily sexual show you aren't paying attention.

I wouldn't go that far. There are plenty of sitcoms and dramas that are far less sexual in nature than Glee. There are also some that are significantly more sexual.

Oh come on, this is Bob Jones University! You can be kicked out of that school for almost anything. Why would anybody want to go there in the first place? I am a fan of Pat Summitt and the Lady Vols. Would their uniforms be considered "erotic"? When the girls collide when trying to get the basketball, is that "sexual perversion"? LOL !

Candidate Georgw W. Bush gave a speech there when he was running for President in early 2000! The news media looked into it and found out the the school still had a rule on the books prohibiting interracial dating. An embarrassed Board of Directors quickly repealed it.

I'm not really qualified to judge, since I'm not part of the organized-religion demographic. Insofar as the incident in question is typical of their approach, then I would agree with you in that amount. I don't think a religious school necessarily _has_ to be an authoritarian mess. :)

Rules are rules. You either stick to the rules or leave. It was his choice to go to that school knowing well what the rules were. I guess maybe he should have learned so common sense before enrolling.

I looked up the school on the internet and although it is a religious school it also stated it is a LIBERAL ARTS college. Need I say more? You can't have it both ways. If you are a Liberal Arts college you need to be a bit more open minded as you are dealing with literature and humanities...art, poetry....all an area that involves creative thinking. There are MANY people that field who are faith based and still watch TV shows about theatre. Seriously????? Also, if it is such a good school, then how come the student is 23 and still in college??? I guess they are keeping kids longer than the usual University??? Most kids go from 18 - 21 or 22 . "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark...."

True, but I was actually referring to the standard definition referring to literature. You HAVE to be open in minded to read the classics. Art, music, poetry....all created and written by some of the most controversial geniuses of all time. It should state just Biblical studies if they are closing the doors on everything else. But, my niece has her doctorate from Columbia University in the field of religion and she is the most liberal person I know. Religion and religious text is studied in detail the meaning interpreted very differently around the world. But, I did find it funny that that was the first line in explaining their school had they word liberal in it.

Not really. Just because the Right wing associates Liberal with some sort of economic system such as Socialism or Communism, it really doesn't have anything to do with economics. It's about humanism, how we treat each other and the evolution and education of those values. Our Constitution is that kind of Liberal and is the heart and soul of American Liberalism.

True.....I think if you want to learn you can study anywhere and meet a variety of people. I imagine it is a way to keep students from mingling with people who may believe differently and therefore who may inspire students to open their minds a bit. LOL

right and even public schools are heavily influenced by christianity when i was a freshman the science teacher was trying to teach evolution some kids even walked out because they refused to learn about it and this was in central california not the bible belt! I imagine the whole college atmosphere is why ppl become so liberal is because they meet different ppl and learn that maybe theyre not so bad, really anywhere wheres there are different ppl from different walks of life are liberal too

Bob Jones has a long tradition of having absurd and antiquated rules. Some might even consider them to be un-Christian. Steve Taylor, a Christian musician, was so outraged and offended by Bob Jones policy against interracial dating that he wrote the song, Colour Code. This was way back in the eighties.

Funny, but true! I went to a liberal arts college sponsored by the Presbyterian Church. (In those days there was no federal aid to education, tuition was low and Church subsidies necessary) The rules were nothing like the rules at Bob Jones University, but there were many daughters of Presbyterian Ministers in my class. Many told me that their father's supported total academic freedom, but liked the fact that the girls had to be back in their dorms by 10:00 pm. The result was that they all lost their virginity and had their orgasms before 10:00 pm.

Presumably he knew what kind of whackos he was joining when he enrolled at BJU. While I commend his values as explained in this post, the University's guidelines as posted are pretty clear and "Glee" would be considered immodest and contain profanity and sexual perversion as BJU sees it. It is a private University, so no matter how obsolete their views, they do get to set their behavioral standards. That said, the fact that Big Brother was watching him at Starbucks is worrisome and a bit demented.

Sad to say, but it's within any school's rights to expel a student who breaks the rules. If he didn't want to abide by stupid rules he should have enrolled somewhere else. It is extremely well known how culturally stilted Bob Jones University is; if his expulsion came as a surprise to him, I wonder if he is ready for a college level education.

I can't imagine going to a school with so many superfluous rules. Thats absolutely absurd. Granted that it is a bible-belt Christian college, and one must expect a certain level of crazy, but still.... It's not even that he's got these rules so much as that he's being monitored so much that he's being caught watching Glee in Starbucks off campus.

I hope that school has dwindling numbers of interested students and eventually it has to adapt or shut down. It saddens me that people would put up with that abuse willingly.

Funny how one of the things they prohibit is not shaving, when shaving is actually one of the things condemned in their oh so precious book.

I understand that they are within their rights to expel someone for breaking the code of conduct, but their rules, and the place in general, sounds like a pile of crap in the first place.

And how did they even know he had watched it? Spying isn't exactly upright moral behaviour.
  • Michael ELLAELL... 2012/05/01 20:02:12

What is kind of ironic is that as a Christian School the Old Testament specifically has a vow about not shaving in Numbers 6:5 so Sampson would of been kicked out too! I guess God changes his mind on what "rules" to follow.
