Student Kicked Out of College After Watching 'Glee': Fair or Foul?

Chris Peterman, a 23-year-old senior at Bob Jones University in South Carolina, was reportedly kicked out of school for watching an episode of "Glee." And he wasn't watching it in class, in his dorm, or anywhere on campus. He was watching it on his laptop at Starbucks. According to Jezebel, he had accumulated a handful of write-ups for 1) trying to start a group "aimed at ending sexual abuse," 2) showing up late to his dorm and 3) not shaving. The school says "Glee" was not the reason they expelled him, but Peterson says it was the last straw.

glee

Bob Jones students are not permitted to watch television on campus, and while off campus there are still guidelines they must abide by. The handbook reads, "Students are to avoid any types of entertainment that could be considered immodest or that contain profanity, scatological realism, sexual perversion, erotic realism, lurid violence, occultism and false philosophical or religious assumptions." Do you think it was fair for the school to kick Peterson out?

While I agree to a point, the rules stipulate off campus activity. How does one think they are going to police off campus activity? Via teachers and students who want to uphold that code of ethics. One must realize this when they agree to that set of rules. The only part of the world that embraces diversity of culture and thought is the part that exists in your own mind. If there are no standards or ethics, then the party that believes opposite of you is going to get slighted and persecuted. As an example, if you believe in a pro homosexual movement, then you are against and will persecute people like Jews, Christians and Muslims that believe Homosexuality is wrong and a sin or at the very least seek to silence them and vice versa because you follow your moral conscious. No one can exist in a morally ambiguous world. You either hold to an objective moral code, or you are in a constant state of flux depending on which side has the majority of support. Anarchy and Chaos seem to follow suit historically. The great empires of our time rarely were conquered by force or over ran by revolt, more often than not, they became morally neutral and apathetic and their empires crumbled from the inside well before invaders from the outside got near their gates.

If those are the rules then, ok. HOWEVER! This is the most ridiculous college. Since when does teaching me include controlling my life? And who do they think they are to have the audacity to even make rules that restrict off campus life? Really anyone who attends this college knowing the stupidity of it is asking for trouble.

Actually, a LOT of private schools do just that. They're just as interested in training individuals for more than just 'work' areas, but for real life as well. This is more and more found in religious schools... Students KNOW the rules before they go.

That's a private university, and, like most private institutions, they happen to have rules. These kinds of things wouldn't be allowed in a government institution, but they are in private ones because those are selected. He chose to go to that college, knowing all it would entail. Are the rules a little ridiculous? Maybe, but they're the rules, and you can follow them or leave.

Are you kidding? Is this Cold War-era China or the U.S.A.? Don't these guys care they're setting themselves up for uber-massive lawsuits and (probably) Federal charges over kicking someone out of school just for receiving communications from the outside world in any detectable way? Not shaving? Does he not have the right to the growth/decoration of his own person? This is "Legalized Kidnapping". I can understand the "being late" part, but the rest is complete horse-flop such as getting angry at a public service group aiming at ending rape/sexual abuse. Are you nut-jobs for real?

Don't go to a private college if they have rules that you don't want to obey. There are many other choices with less strict rules.

Say what you want, but Bob Jones University is NOT a public institution, it's a private one.

This has nothing to do with 'racism', this has everything to do with values, EVERYTHING to do with values. This school actually sits down and teaches students certain values. As long as the student (and teachers, and faculty) live by them, everything's kosher. The minute they stray from them, not so much.

Glee would most certainly violate this school's values system. NOT that I'm in agreement with the school, but the reality is that you have to live by the rules that are set forth. Yet another case of "I'll do what I want and whine like a little girl when I'm called on it".

I honestly hate the show glee, but I wouldn't say expel kids for watching it. It's an utterly horrible show, but if the world says that they can expel students for watching it, then what's stopping them from expelling people for other stupid reasons? Like what music you listen to, or makeup, or if you wear the wrong brand of shoes or shirts. It's stupid.

Bob Jones is a private religious school The administration can do as they please. Fundamentalists don't agree with homosexuality or overt sexual references. GLEE is full of that. So yes I agree with their ruling. That student should have figured he get booted for watching a show that just oozes sex and homosexual references.

Actually yes they do. If they want to maintain good conduct amongst the students they are allowed to publish any rules deemed appropriate by various counselors and such. It's the school's right to prohibit their students from doing anything they regard as unacceptable. He knew the rules and chose not to follow them.
