A New York City teenager said an attack by bullies at his school has left him unable to see in one eye.

Bullying and beating up people - in this case a hate crime - is inadmissible and must be punished by law, especially in case of bodily injuries. As to the claim of 16 Million, it is exaggerated. In diverse European countries, they would claim the full medical cost or damage repair, including a compensation for pain and suffering, and, in case of invalidity, a calculated loss of salary. The amounts paid are far lower than in the USA. It is also true that there is a certain number of frauds and abuse with accident, car and other insurances, which increases the insurance rates.

Its sad that this happend, is the level of compensation fair that is what we should ask.
A woman in the UK got £500,000.00 for repetitive strain injury to her index finger, a UK soldier has his legs blown of and gets £100,000.00.
There are people who supplement their pay by a whiplash, a fall here and a fall there,a twisted angle here a twisted a sprained wrist there.Bad back is alway a good one, and depression hard to prove.
There should be compensation for geniune cases, but i know, you know, of people who are having a jolly good time with these compensation claims.
I had a friend whom i new for years, walked into a building, saw a small amount of water on the floor, saw it walked over it and slipped on purpose, put a claim in for £250 k and said his life had been changed. He now cant understand why i do not want to speak to him never again. He done it on purpose, he even told me that he done it on purpose, good little number. He still repairs computers( he gets paid in cash no comebacks)
Its these claims that are hiking our insurance up every year, with the help of the vermin scum pond life lawyer he is now much better of than he was before and yet he done it on purpose, and there are loads of these cases slowly, slowly killing the system.

Drove to Manchester yesterday, a car driving 40 mph on a 70 mph limit, what they were looking for was someone to come to close, slam the breaks on and claim for whiplash and other claims, good idea, buy a car for £500.00, and then claim anything from 2 to 5 k in compensation.
The lawyers do know that these scum, done a scam, but a lot of these lawyers are from the same pond.

Yes that might be the case, what would happen if i had my head kicked in in the streets on NY,
should i take the NY Police to court, because they were not there to protect me and that is what they shold do.
What they SHOULD do and what they CAN do is are sometimes and very often unachievable.

WHERE were his parents, family, teavhers, ADULTS IN CAFETERIA ?? He probably endured some kind of problems that led the bullies to believe they can get away with this kind of "behavior?" " THE POLICE" OR SOME GUARDS need to be in some schools !! What are these "children" going to be like when they come of age?? What are their parents REALLY like ??

This is starting to get really out of hand. He's blinded in one eye? The amount of draw-backs that could case in his life...that's not even bullying, that should be violence and/or assault. I say let him sue them, they deserve it.

$16M is pocket change in comparison to what he should get. $16M after taxes will be around $8M. Then divide that by living for a minimum of another 50 years - he will get $150,000 a year. Add to that medical expenses and ancillary issues - such as possibly not being able to drive, pain and suffering... $16M is nothing.

That is really bad. I think he has a right to sue. What about these kids that did it? And I agree, it was a hate crime. They were saying he is gay and stuff.

This kid has lost his eye. It is physical and he can sue. The damage done to me inside is way more severe than the loss of one eye from my school years. I have been damaged for life. I am 45 years old and still suffering.

Good luck to this kid actually seeing 14 mil. I think the kids that did it should be strung up.

I'd say it will be very difficult for a jury to ignore a blinded young man sitting in front of them. IF it ever gets to court the school district will LOSE big time.

This has gotten out of hand. The attack here, assaults on girls and autistic children, and the berating of the grandmother school bus monitor need to be dealt with seriously. I'm sick of the excuses that an = > 12 year old is just a "kid" who doesn't think about consequences. Bs. I wasn't born an adult. I remember being that age and knowing damn well actions like this were wrong. By this age the human brain can comprehend right and wrong based on what is taken in by the senses. Having vermin for parents is no excuse either. Violent crimes committed by anyone 12 or older should be tried as adults. Incarceration should be in a juvenile detention facility until their 18th birthday on which day they go to an adult prison for the rest of their sentence. Maybe then these young people will think twice before committing these crimes.

Ulysse's parents should certainly be suing the parents of the attackers too. The bullies should be charged as adults with assault as a hate crime. Sentence them to the maximum to keep them from hurting anyone else.

As for the $16 million this high amount is meant to grab attention. Likely they will get less. But these school districts need to get serious about student safety. There have been more than enough violent incidents by students. At this point every school district in the country should be making student safety their top priority.

I am so sickened by these kinds of stories, since it is due to learned behavior, which could change if new generations make the effort to end it. As long as older people continue to influence in (some) homes that it is okay to be this way, it will continue. If only it were possible to wipe the brains clean of hateful adults and then start fresh, teaching young people the right way to be.
