Steves Government idea: after the next president is elected, allow each state to have a "ruler" called a governor, in each city, a "ruler" called a mayor? what do you think?

I like it, however let's add in there that the Federal Government has to do away with any department that the States already have; Commerece, Education, Health and Human Services, Transportation, Environmental Protection Agency, etc. Sound good?

This is a lot like what we have now, isn't it? Except for the fact that the states are all "ruled" by the federal government.

It could work. Especially if they were elected regularly. Interesting concept. The president wouldn't have to micromanage.

Actually what you describe is DEMOCRACY at least until we the people of this nation allowed those we elected to represent us to become our DICTATORS, and make no mistake that is exactly what they are! When the Federal Government dictates to the states and it's citizens a law or course of action in defiance of the will of the majority
of those citizens they no longer represent a free and Democratic government, they are dictatorial. Misdirection, Lies and Sophistry are their weapons and we are their targets.
When a government no longer represents the will of the Majority of its citizens it can no longer call itself Democratic, when a government deny's its states their freedoms it can hardly be called united, and when we the people fail to rise up and fight for those freedoms how can we call ourselves Americans?

While I'm not a US citizen, I would have to disagree. A ruler implies 'monarchy' and that isn't currently or in fact has ever run in fact the USA was created in direct contradiction to monarchistic rule.

Now as far as I am aware the people choose who they want their representative to be and therefore the people rule...they might have their opinions condensed (this is why I don't like republics) but even still their opinions are put forward and laws are brought about. This is called a bottom up approach.

What you are proposing is a top down approach. Unless you want a dictatorship, it's going to fail. We've seen it before time and time again. The only country that has chosen to effectively elect a Monarch I believe is Venezuela. Also these 'rulers' would be able to do things without checks and balances. Very very bad idea.

Your democracy is not a new one, it is gone through all trial & methods. Still if felt for any additions and substrates can always be done the democratic way.

Damn, that sounds an awful lot like what was practiced under the Articles of Confederation and became our Constitution.
It was working fairly well until some guy named Honest Abe thought he knew more than the founders, collectively, and decided we should have another fight over how the nation was governed.

Good idea....now we just have to get the federal government from interfering with foolish mandates like NCLB.

This plan works if each piece understand their parameters of authoriity. When one gets tooooo totalaritan there is a major mess-up.

It was set up that way a long time ago and worked until the federal government decided it trumped states rights on every issue. I would prefer no government involvement, but that's not going to happen.
