Today Virginia became the first state in the nation to enact legislation to protect citizens from being forced to purchase health insurance or participate in any health care system against their will.
The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has identified 37 other states that have similar bills pending or have announced that they will introduce this legislation. Already, at least one house of the legislatures in Idaho, Missouri, and Tennessee have also passed such legislation.
These legislative initiatives are based on ALEC’s model Freedom of Choice in Health Care Act.
Under the legislation, any state attempt to require an individual to purchase health insurance — or forbid an individual from purchasing services outside of the required health care system — would be rendered unconstitutional. The measure may also cause a federalism clash if Congress passes a law with either of these provisions.
“Control over our own individual health care choices is something most Americans take very personally. It is not surprising that so many state legislators are eager to pass legislation to protect their constituents from any health care mandates, either from the state or federal government,” said Christie Herrera, director of ALEC’s Health and Human Services Task Force, which is coordinating the nationwide effort.
----> “It is urgent for states to take action and protect the liberty of their citizens so they can direct their own health care in the way they see fit.
Our history proves it is economic freedom that helped us reduce poverty and provide the good health care we have now. Command-and-control mandates advance destructive behavior on many levels,” said Kansas State Senator Mary Pilcher-Cook, sponsor of SCR-1626, Kansas’ Health Care Freedom Act.
The Freedom of Choice in Health Care Act has already been filed or prefiled in 33 states — Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Lawmakers in an additional four states — Montana, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and Utah—have publicly announced their intentions to file the legislation. A citizen-led initiative has also been announced in Colorado.
A complete map with links to the legislation in each state is available online at www.alec.org.

Jibaro March 23, 2010 02:46:02+4Be careful what you wish for. Without a mandated purchase of health care insurance, health insurance rates are going to swallow up our economy in the not too distant future. The average cost of health insurance is about $13,000 a year and is growing a lot faster than inflation and wages. We can't afford to keep the health insurance system the way it functions right now. If our Government had ENFORCED ILLEGALS IMMIGRATION /DEPORTION LAWS in this Country and put steep fines on Businesses for employing Illegtals , mandating DECADES AGO to STOP providing, jobs, education, and medical coverage etc to illegals our social programs today would not be in dire straights .
I will check out the web sight you provided. I do appreciate your input.
Americans have alot of work to do !~ November Election we need to VOTE EVERY DEMORAT OUT !! especially if they are not a Conservatives or who did not listen to the American people. WE need Conservatives mainly Republican Conservatives. !~Once we mix up Congresss . we can execute the order to IMPEACH OBAMA.
Pelosi and Reid wont get re-elected. and there are so many who need to go too.
Obama will try to sell this Obama Bill to the American people, Manipulate us as he did Congress /Senate in hopes Ameircans forgive and forget when they go to the Election pollls in November.
We need to vote them out !~
To Mandate Americans to "buy or sell" is not the "American Way" & its refreshing to see states taking the needed steps to protect its citizens.
I hope to see a domino efffect with ALL states passing the Health Care Freedom Act to stop Obama, Pelosi and Reid from slamming this down our throats.
Schools are run by the states which have state proficiciency testing. And if you decide to go to college the Federal Government doesnt tell you what college to go to.
Water, Sanitation, fire , emergency services are not mandated by the Government are they? that is on local level Government .
I suppose you could go live on a deserted island? I know there are times Id like to LOL....
When the Government mandates health care as it will . and Americans will have doctor/nurse shortages, We wont be in any better shape then as we are now ...The only thing they wanted this Health Care Bill passed for was they already bleed the Social Security dry using it as a slush fund , mismanaged the money million of Americans stuck into it and now they need a new slush fund.
You and I will pay into it for years before we can we actually get that " great health care " that some Americans think they are going to get. This is just a control freak issue. Not one thing in the Health Care Bill states that Federal government cant dip their sticky fingers into . And By God they will !~
