OAKLAND (KCBS) – Bay Area drivers could one day be tracked using a GPS-like device in their cars and taxed per miles driven -- a scenario which is part of a proposed long-range study aimed at finding ways to reduce traffic and pollution, while also raising revenues. States consider mileage tax via GPS. Should drivers be taxed for miles driven?

That would negatively influence tourism and would put more tax burden on workers. Gas and electricity are taxed, so the farther you drive the more you're taxed anyway. Besides I think that this mileage reader could pose a risk to the pump. It would be electric and the tiniest spark can explode those things. I'm sure there's a way to make that work.

actually with today's technology that would not be a problem. I am glad I don't own an American vehicle....since the bailout, I bet the government is already forcing the companies to work on something like this.

The Federal Gov't. already taxes us via a $0.245 tax per gallon of gas purchased. This is a way to double tax us once again. There are of course State & local taxes added to gas to the tune of $0.66 / gal. So as of right now, in some areas, there is almost $1.00 worth of tax on us / gal.

Not until the gas tax is revoked and made unconstitutional via a constitutional amendment.

But that won't happen. They'll implement this eventually. They need to replace the gas tax as more cars go off gas and as they get better gas mileage.

I would much rather use my personal vehicle than most public transportation. So I would likely pay the tax and continue to drive. But , where I live there is no public transportation , anyway.

Has anyone bothered to notice that the article cited is about what is being considered in only one area of the country (the San Francisco Bay Area), but the question says that States are considering doing it?

Is anyone else bothered by that?

Jesus. H. Christ. Btw - You can take that b.s. out about it being aimed at finding ways to reduce traffic and pollution and just leave "raising revenues" in there all by itself because THAT is the only thing they're interested in. My God. Idiots.

GPS can be uncalibrated or in error. It is better to tax the gas.

However, with the advent of electric/hybrids...in order to get to the diminishing road taxes, they will collect by state via GPS, eventually. (If in the state of origin, you are billed. If out of state, you pay the road tax in that state.)

All cars will come with an RF chip in the license plate, which also bills you on tolls.

In CA, they already have an RF device you place inside your windshield, so you can go through the express toll gates.

I did not say I condone this...but when it comes to states getting their money fix...they tend to follow the easy money.

PRoblem is states like CA waste all their money and keep taxing taxing taxing to keep up with their wasted spending.. So you get cities now turning to bankruptcy but the governor wants to keep increasing taxes... No wonder more and more companies are moving out of these states along with tax payers... It's no wonder they are bankrupt.. ridiculous taxes just keep pushing more and more people out...

Democratic Governors Nationwide are strait forward, need revenue, Raise Taxes, Republicans are not as strait forward, they need revenue, they create Fees.

Since you live in the State of, (oh do not share a state) I wonder what sacrifices YOU make to balance your state/national Budget? General Electric Pays nothing in Federal Taxes, Oil Companies pay little to nothing.

How about levying a Fee on every US Corporation that has jobs in Foreign, (even Communist China) countries? one employee (or independent Contractor, yea, lose That loophole) one tax.

Note: according to http://www.glassdoor.com/Sala... Hewlett Packard led by mrs get a million for eliminating US jobs NutMeg Whitless, is paying Communist Chinese Engineers and Project Managers an average of $60,858.50 a year! (388,118 Yuan) I think a LOT of American Engineers would be happy with those wages!

    According to: http://www.crn.com/news/mobil...

"HP, faced with challenges to several of its core businesses, is in the midst of a restructuring that will likely include layoffs. One audience member asked Whitman if she could provide a specific number for jobs she anticipates cutting.

"As we create the financial capacity to invest in R&D, in people and customer support, we have to look at how we spend money across HP," she responded...

However, Whitman said layoffs will not impact employees in HP's China-based operations. "There will be no workforce reduction in China on a broad scale at all. You will not see broad-based workforce reduction across any of our businesses," she said.".

Yes, Get rid of More American Jobs, but do not threaten Communist China! I will not Buy another HP product as long as Whitman is their CEO, and judging from her record, HP will be in the poorhouse from her managing, oops outsourcing history.

get rid of unions and reduce the size of government and maybe we wouldn't need to waste more money funding these wasted jobs. make it worth investing in this country vs sending more and more jobs overseas... We live in the highest corporate tax rates, so no wonder more and more jobs go over seas... I run my own business and I do everything I can to keep profits as high as possible.. It's the main reason to start a company.. With higher and higher costs, taxes, healthcare, the first place to cut is with employees.. One of the best parts of this economic downturn, has been the realization that I can still be profitable with less employees, be more efficient with the ones I do have and allow them to make more... Most of us all invest already in our states, its called state taxes and we already pay enough in this state of CA.. I've been looking at ways to move my business to NV, it just doesn't make sense to keep it in CA... Whitman would have been great for this state, but it's only going to get worse when comes NOv and the tax initiative doesn't pass...

you sir seem to be a total idiot!
Right, CEO pay has grown to 700% of worker wages, yet workers when adjusted for inflation have been flat since the 1960's
The only thing Whitless knows is how to destroy companies, that is why eBay asked her to resign.

Please do us all a favor and take your morally worthless ass to NV,

The money junkies in Washington D.C. want us to support their spending habits.

Thanks to the job killing "free trade" agreements that they signed, the average working resident in my county has to drive between 35 and 60 miles, one way to get to work.

You're correct in your statement, provided you drive a gas or diesel fueled vehicle. Anyone who drives an all-electric vehicle, for example, pays no fuel tax and, therefore, gets to use and put wear and tear on the roadway without paying for it at all. Is that fair? Anyone who drives a car that gets 40mpg pays half as much as someone who drives a car getting 20mpg for the same number of miles driven. Is that fair?

Let me make it clear, though: Charging for miles driven (measured via GPS or some other reliable method) would be acceptable to me ONLY with a coincident elimination of comparable taxes at the pump.
