The idiot who proposed this is Art, the poster of the question in the first place. He references an article about this idea being considered in the San Francisco Bay area (which, by the way, is an entire continent away from where you live in S. Carolina) then makes the false statement that states are considering using GPS to track our cars.

I read and listened to the CBS articles he referenced. According to those articles, the only entities even considering the question are local govt.s in the Bay Area. The only place the states are considering it is in Art's fevered imagination. Nowhere is there even a hint of a suggestion that the federal Gov't is involved.

Figures. He used false information to creat imaginary problems. Plain idiocy

Not only at the pump bu state sales tax for road maintenance . Here they were getting 1 percent but got another percent a couple years ago. We pay 7 percent sales tax and they get 2 percent HIWAY ROBBERY

we are already taxed for gas. did you know that even overseas the government taxes gas for the military for military vehicles and for personal vehicles? that is the ONLY tax we can't escape. we don't need to be double taxed for the same thing basically.

"...just another way to keep track of us..." If you have a cell phone that's less than 5 to 7 years old "they" can already track you with GPS technology. If your phone is so old that it doesn't have GPS capability "they" can still locate you by triangulation from two or three adjacent cell towers. Where and how are you gonna' hide? The fact that you posted the above comment means that you signed onto the internet and "they" can, at a minimum, locate you by the server you signed on through.

If "they" want to find you "they" will find you, GPS tracker on your car or not.

OHH yeah. So many don't realize this. They are or can track anyone by GPS. Even the new cars have installed GPS. So where you go big brother has his eye on you

It's not only being proposed by states but by the obama administration also.Call it whatever they want it's an invasion of privacy.We already pay a gas tax which in essence is a mileage tax.

It amazes me that the only acceptable forms of ingenuity allowed for these days in America are the highly imaginative ways that the various levels of Govenermnet can come up with ways to separate the American People from THEIR hard earned dollars and make THEM think that they OWE it to the Government or that the Government has a RIGHT to DO this....

Instead, we should re-examine the entire model of government ownership of streets and roads. Neighborhoods can form associations to take care of their streets. Merchants can form associations to take care of stretches of the thoroughfares that bring customers and suppliers to them. And the USA and the UK both have histories of private companies building, owning, and managing highways, or "Turnpikes."

The present model of taxes on motor fuels will serve for only a little while longer. Keep raising it, and people will demand more fuel efficiency.

A straight toll will be easy enough to collect on a highway. But the kind of road that offers direct access to residential, commercial, or industrial property will have to devolve to management by associations of the property owners.

Speaking of residential streets..in some cases if there are not enough houses to tax on that street they will not pave the street. I know. My first home was on an unpaved street and only 2 homes located on the street. That was 55 years ago. Still not paved but they pay taxes the same rate

The fuel tax in UK is so high, that is done already. The further you drive, the more diesel, therefore more taxes.

People who vote yes on this sort of thing are just idiots. They dont realise that when fuel goes up EVERYTHING goes up.

It really depends, with what our tax money is going to now, then NO. But, if that tax was going towards finding cheaper, cleaner energy sources, the small amount you would pay might actually pay off. Of course, we'd have to be able to trust our government first.
