INSANE: State Representative's Campaign Outs Her Own Son To Prove She's More Anti-Gay Than Her Opponent
Brett LoGiurato

A Colorado State Rep.'s
campaign has outed her own son as gay in an attempt to prove her opposition to gay marriage and civil unions is greater than her opponent, The Denver Post reports.

State Rep. Marsha Looper's campaign manager sent an email to her supporters over the weekend that heaped praise on the lawmaker for opposing civil unions even though her son is gay. That wasn't exactly a secret at the State Capitol, the Post reports, but Looper has never publicly said that.

"I'm very, very disappointed," Looper said, of the e-mail making its way among El Paso County voters. "These are are very intimate issues. I love my son. I always will. He has said, 'Mom, I want my privacy."

The Advocate reports that in the email, Looper's campaign manager wrote, "God is truly to be praised for Marsha Looper because she also has a homosexual son." She also wrote, "Praise God!" that Looper had recently voted against a bill that would have made civil unions legal in Colorado.

Looper is facing Rep. Amy Stephens in a June 26 primary after the two were redrawn into the same district. The Post reports that Looper "appeared supportive" to a civil unions bill last year, and has tried to walk back on that this year in an attempt to establish more credibility with social conservatives.

Stephens didn't provide any comment on the email.
