Southwest Calls Woman Out for Cleavage: Was the Airline Justified?

Airlines have a way of creeping into the news any time a passenger plays too much "Words With Friends" or allows his pants to sag a little too much. This week is no different. According to Jezebel, a woman was hassled on a 6 a.m. Southwest flight from Las Vegas to New York a few weeks ago because she was boasting too much boobage. You know... cleavage, baggage, breastage... She was showing too much of her twins. At least, that's what the airline said.

A woman going by the name Avital told Jezebel that she was told her outfit was "inappropriate" because it showed too much of her chest, but she didn't let that deter her. She boarded the plane anyway and, in her own words, "Lo and behold, the plane didn't fall out of the sky... My cleavage did not interfere with the plane's ability to function properly." Do you think Avital deserved to be called out by Southwest Airlines for having too much cleavage, or is her outfit perfectly acceptable?

I dont think the airline was justified at all. Now i would understand if she had pulled a Madonna and had a nip slip, but looking at her outfit, its not that bad, a girl that i went to high school with showed off more clevage in school.

I remember when Madonna was very popular. Many of us feared immodesty would escalate as young (and other) gals tried to copy her or to take advantage of also getting attention.

The airlines should ENCOURAGE cleavage - and maybe if they had female porn stars as TSA agents, people would actually WANT to go through security and be "patted down". I know I would !!

I REALLY DON'T WANT TO SIT NEXT TO ALL THAT! BUT UNLESS THE AIRLINES HAS A DRESS CODE PRINTED ON THE "PURCHASE AGREEMENT/TICKET," ...DON'T THINK THEY CAN MAKE A MEASUREMENT OF CLEAVAGE EXPOSURE FOR BOARDING.

Drooping pants, drooping decolletage... another sign of drooping (read DECLINING) morals. That aside, she can dress any way she wants, but I don't have to have in my face. Besides that, her outfit looks like she dressed in a hurry (drunk) and forgot her blouse.

Several Muslim "women" in full chadoor (is that the name and how it is spelled?) got out of a mini-van, disrobed to reveal they were men covered in weapons. They ran through a hotel shooting all male guests (boys and men) they could find.

They should keep their thoughts to themselves. Escpecially what someone decides to wear. Cleavage showing isn`t something new, or should a woman be made to feel ashamed of it. lol Medeival paintings of queens cleavage Medeival paintings of queens cleavage

We,in America are the prudes. Has anyone been to the beaches in Europe and in Greece? The women are mostly topless. No one is seen glaring at these women. There are people in their native lands of Africa that still are topless. Because of our Puritanical background in this country, we are still in most cases prudes. Remember when in the 1700's or even as late as the 1800's, a piano's legs were covered because it looked too sexy. You buy a ticket to fly somewhere - you shouldn't be told how to dress. Especially once seated, no one really sees you except the passenger next to you.

You have some credible points, but, that doesn't make it right. Two extremes are stated. One is totally over-doing the prudish part. The other extreme is the immodesty. I say let's go for a compromise! Let it all hang out in one's own home, the bathroom, the locker room, the doctor's office, the hospital! NOT in public!!!!

I'd rather the women keep their boobs to themselves! I don't mind knowing others' thoughts and opinions. I don't want to know their boob particulars. Sure, I can look away! BUT to know to look away, I have to first have seen them. I don't appreciate immodesty in anyone.

This is interesting. To a guy, this is not that much of a thing. To a woman, it is. Because women are their own culture in and of themselves.

This isn't cleavage... more like acreage... or expanse of flesh above the boob level. The woman on the airline had cleavage so vast if she inhaled the vacuum would have sucked the air out of the airplane. LOL.

I love breasts, but I love cleavage even more. When a pair of breasts are pressed together their power increases exponentially.

We allegedly live in a free society. That means sometimes putting up with other people expressing themselves in ways that offend us. Accept it. Seriously, learn how to tolerate other people.

What is really offensive about all of this is that there is nothing more natural in the entire world that the human body. We all have one. We as a people need to just grow up.

Seriously, I am worn out by people who get all worked up over what other people are doing. If you don't like seeing cleavage, then avert your eyes. If you don't want to hear profanity, stick your fingers in your ears. If you don't want your children to be exposed to other human beings, then don't reproduce.

I agree that as a private company, Southwest has the right to impose a dress code upon their passengers. However, I tried to find said dress code on Southwest.com and nada. SO, it appears to me that it is arbitrary and therefore unjustifiable. I find the fugly flannel shirt she's wearing more offensive than her muffin tops. I'd have no problem allowing my kids or grandkid sit next to her...

I really do not enjoy looking at another woman's breasts. I am not jealous, mine are more than ample. I just have learned to be more modest over the years. I used to bellydance and some of my bras/costumes were revealing, but that goes with the territory, they were not worn all over in busy, public places. Bathing suits are the same way. That is why they make "coverups" to put on over them.

It is not the place of the airlines to tell their customers how to dress. Some people are exhibitionists and love to expose the rest of us to their wares. I think some women do not think about what goes on in a man's mind when they see that. I had a husband that enlightened me. He was overly obsessed about showing nothing ever, but he had a good point. If you want every dirty old man, pervert, rapist, etc., drooling over you, go ahead, realize they are ogling you with bad thoughts in mind. But if you want to be more protective of yourself, some modesty is a safety net. Again, like I said, most women also do not want to have another woman's boobs in her face, especially if you are short.

Southwest Airlines is a private business. It has a right to establish any kind of standards it chooses as long as those standards are not illegal, racist, etc. If they feel this standard is in the best interest of their business and their customers, they have every right.

I saw a woman dressed magnificantly in elegant fur coat at an airport in Europe. She looked like a model, but perhaps not. In any case, her coat was short and the agent asked her something and as she leaned forward to see what it was he was referring too, the coat got shorter and lo, and behold, no underwear! I happened to be seating waiting for the flight announcements. I presume she got on board ok - but that was back in the 90's - maybe we have gotten "prudish" as the years go by? The airline could have just told her to throw something over her shoulders. Another airlines refused a passenger because of some words on her tee shirt. Agent at 1st a/p told her to cover it up, she did. When she landed to catch the connecting flt. home - that flt. captain told her she could not board because of the words on it, even though she did have the scarf over it. You probably heard about that - last month I think.
