Southwest Calls Woman Out for Cleavage: Was the Airline Justified?

Airlines have a way of creeping into the news any time a passenger plays too much "Words With Friends" or allows his pants to sag a little too much. This week is no different. According to Jezebel, a woman was hassled on a 6 a.m. Southwest flight from Las Vegas to New York a few weeks ago because she was boasting too much boobage. You know... cleavage, baggage, breastage... She was showing too much of her twins. At least, that's what the airline said.

A woman going by the name Avital told Jezebel that she was told her outfit was "inappropriate" because it showed too much of her chest, but she didn't let that deter her. She boarded the plane anyway and, in her own words, "Lo and behold, the plane didn't fall out of the sky... My cleavage did not interfere with the plane's ability to function properly." Do you think Avital deserved to be called out by Southwest Airlines for having too much cleavage, or is her outfit perfectly acceptable?

Before I or anyone can choose not to look, to look away, etc., we are indirectly forced to see them in order to know to look away. Why do these women choose to show off their breasts anyway? To get men to gawk at them? To prove to themselves they can get men or people to look? for attention? Any suggestions as to why? The psychology of it?

Calling someone "white trash" is not what I call manners. The clothing depicted in the article isn't even what I call offensive in the least. What's she supposed to do? Shrink her boobs?

Did I call anyone white trash? No. I said, I'M NOT white trash. What she should've done was wear clothing that wasn't so revealing. She could've worn a t-shirt or something. It's hot here in Texas, too. That doesn't give me the right to walk around town without a shirt. That's just poor taste. You may not have manners or standards on how people should behave, but I do.

It comes down to : some women will do anything to get attention....the poor things. They get the wrong attention. Things? I was referring to being an object that is referred to as a "sex object".

Exactly! There are several kids around the airport there. Freedom is a mutual thing not an individual thing, and that's the biggest problem with our society today. Everyone is so damn self-absorbed that they're not concerned about the welfare of others.

She is wearing a dress that isn't all that revealing AND she is wearing a flannel shirt plus a scarf. She wasn't going shirtless. Also how does her outfit effect the welfare of anyone? The only way I could see that outfit effecting anyone's welfare is if she was attacking people with her breast. Also it isn't like she is wearing a hooker uniform....This likely wasn't an issue of passenger safety or the well beings of others, I'm guessing it was some low level ultra-conservative douche-bag airline employee(ultra-liberals are douche-bags as well.). I say low level employee because if it was anyone who actually wielded any power she wouldn't have boarded. If a person's outfit isn't outright obscene, they are well within their rights to wear said outfit, if people don't like it, they can simply avert their eyes....It is real simple.

Hey! All I'm saying is she should class it up a bit is all. It would be one thing if she was going to the beach, but she wasn't.

Relax brother....All I am saying is she was wearing a modest dress, hardly beach apparel, unless you're Amish. *cricket noises* Okay so that wasn't all that funny...*shrugs* She is dressed like an average looking college student walking to class. She isn't even showing all that much cleavage, she just has a larger than average bust. (beginning to wonder if we are even looking at the same img). I wasn't trying to attack you nor flaming you, I was simply joining the debate. Obviously we have VASTLY different opinions on what is considered appropriate clothing. No aggro on my end anyway.

Like I said, I am not trying to attack you...We just have differing opinions and are both trying to show the other why we believe SW airlines was out of line or the lady was out of line. I'm sure we doffer on a lot of things....I am curious about your avatar though. Are you a fan of comic books or just a really proud American? I myself love comic books/graphic novels...though after my time in the military and the state of our country, I am...not all that proud to be American...*shrugs* Frak this comment is long....Well til next time brother.

I'm a fan of comic books and a proud American. I'm also liberal. Actually, I'm a democratic socialist. While I agree Southwest Airlines may have overreacted, I still think she could've worn something less skimpy. That's the only point I'm trying to make.

Ah yes. The tired old "you're a teenager so you don't know what you're talking about" defense. Here I thought you were some "I've lived through the war, dammit" types, but nope. You're only in your 30s.

Teenagers I know are quite well-mannered, modest, and of good integrity. I don't think age has anything to with it except that there is so much immodesty going around, that it has become too well and easily accepted. That is why it is important that children on planes and in other places NOT be "exposed" to things like this. It should not become so easily accepted. I saw a mother and her little girl walking in their "2-piece" bathing suits on a major blvd. This street is known for having many sex offenders living along it (bus route). There is a lot more involved with immodesty than just freedom to be less clothed in front of others!

Look them up on google...THAT is Cleavage Kingdom. Many of the wenches are plus-sized too so they can't help having their corsetry push them up a lot.

And yet it's also based on a style of dress from the age of sensitive catholic/protestant dignity...funny how the world can really turn backwards.

Mel Marten is completely accurate here. There is so much cleavage to be found at faires, much more prominent than this woman on an airline had. I don't really consider on an airplane to be a public place, given all the security you need to go through and that you have to pay to be on board. Faires tend to be held in parks, and are open to the public. There are a lot of families that go to them. And although cleavage is more rampant and just more in general at faires, I don't hear complaints about it from patrons (unless someone's husband is staring at a wench for too long, lol). So I don't really understand why the airline would throw a fit over one woman with a low v-neckline who could probably use a more supportive bra. There are far worse things in the world.

them they can't go on a plane.

unfortunately no they are not in a position to say anything and yeah there has been much worse that I have seen. Skanks are everywhere I am afraid, bu You just have to ignore people like that anyway, when someone is showing everyone (the girls) what they have they have NO respect for theirselves and they want the negative attention, if you dress like a slut most likely your a slut... as they say if it walks like a duck, It's a duck Yall".....I actually feel sorry for her.

I don't think they were justified at all. Her outfit is slutty but that's no reason they should call her out. The airlines are not in any position to criticize ANYONE these days...
