Southwest Calls Woman Out for Cleavage: Was the Airline Justified?

Airlines have a way of creeping into the news any time a passenger plays too much "Words With Friends" or allows his pants to sag a little too much. This week is no different. According to Jezebel, a woman was hassled on a 6 a.m. Southwest flight from Las Vegas to New York a few weeks ago because she was boasting too much boobage. You know... cleavage, baggage, breastage... She was showing too much of her twins. At least, that's what the airline said.

A woman going by the name Avital told Jezebel that she was told her outfit was "inappropriate" because it showed too much of her chest, but she didn't let that deter her. She boarded the plane anyway and, in her own words, "Lo and behold, the plane didn't fall out of the sky... My cleavage did not interfere with the plane's ability to function properly." Do you think Avital deserved to be called out by Southwest Airlines for having too much cleavage, or is her outfit perfectly acceptable?

I think I'd take issue with this one. If a woman HAS clevage that usually means that she has a bra on...which is a minimum requirement most of the time.

It's when they DON'T have cleavage that things get a little bit questionable. Some are just too small too ever raise an eyebrow, which is fine. Buuuuttt....When the old bags hang down past the knees or out in the isle....I can see them insisting that the woman reign them things in!

Southwest needs sensitivity training rEEEallly bad!

The airline shoud have given her a discount for helping men and some women not be so nervous about flying by distracting them with her lovely breasts. Just saying.

What she wore was not that bad and quite common, actually. Anyone that cannot handle see that much cleavage needs to get help. Jealousy and sexual repression are no reasons to punish the well endowed who like showing off some but not to an over the top degree. She showed no more than ample cleavage, not her nipples or anything. Sheesh.

As long as they are adequately covered it should not matter how big they are. In this case they were covered enough. If we are going to start discriminating against women on the basis of their breast sizes I suggest we start with women that show a hell of a lot more cleavage than that or who don't wear bras or nipple covers or anything knowing full well their nipples are showing through their thin tops.

It is wrong to offend others. Why should others have to be subjected to seeing too much of our bodies, if such offends them? It is right to be considerate of others when choosing what to wear. Don't everybody want to see all that. Word.

It is a shame that so many in the US are so offended by the human body. People need to realx a little bit. Just like with the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction. It was a breast people... how is that worth a million dollar fine. Did anyone die because of it? Was anyone hurt by it? No. What in the hell is the matter with all you people.

An airline is in business to serve the general public. While this woman certainly has other wardrobe issues, it is incumbent upon the airline to ensure ALL passengers are not forced to endure some idiots butt crack or too much flesh anywhere else. What happened to common sense when people would dress appropriately to go shopping or flying in public?

It is also incumbent upon airlines to make all customers feel comfortable and appreciated unless they do something that makes that impossible. This woman showing cleavage should not have made treating her right impossible since cleavage is something that people see all the time and what she showed was not over the top. No nipple exposure, no bra exposed, no almost falling out of her garment, no nipples showing her clothes, etc. The airline was way out of line and any customer bothered by her cleavage needed to grow up, learn to mind their own business, and not look at or focus on something that offends them.

If the woman was black or hispanic, do you really think anyone would have said anything?

How is boarding the aircraft any different than walking around the airport?

If any laws were violated, the police are always at the airport -- let them do their job. If no laws were violated -- take your seat and enjoy the flight.

And that's the problem. Few people today have brains. If I want to show off my ___, it shouldn't bother you -- just look the other way if you don't want to see it. In 1912 it would have never occurred to someone they shouldn't be exposing themselves in public -- today we let it all hang out and it's YOUR problem is you don't like it.

Depends on the woman, each woman should have different rules applied to her based on a scale of hotness...

    fat woman cleavage
    Cleavage Prohibited at All Times!

    cleavage
    Cleavage Allowed at All Costs!

You make an interesting point. I doubt anyone would question Giada no matter how much cleavage was showing.

Same thing if the passenger was black or hispanic. Nobody wants to deal with Al Sharpton and a rent-a-mob shouting allegations of racism.

    It is their business.

Lo and behold, a business' right to refuse to provide services.

Actually, yes. If they kick you off the plane, you are not eligible for a refund. This is why they give you ample warnings. It is up to them to refund your money at that point.

If they warn you and you don't like their attitude, you should be able to get a refund if you determine you do not wish to comply with their demand or demands. If they warn you, you ignore them, and they kick you off the plane, you should get nothing back. However, I am not convinced that airline has a policy prohibiting cleavage. I think the airline was being arbitrary and unfair.
  • Command... Anthony... 2012/07/08 02:28:44
    Commander Pyle
Sure, which is why you don't board the plane in the first place. Then again, you more than likely won't get your full refund depending on the purchased ticket.

As far as I know airlines don't have an official dress code that requires that women keep their breasts completely covered at all times. So, if they do something unreasonable like ban a woman dressed reasonably like she was they deserve to and probably will end up getting rightfully sued.
  • Command... Anthony... 2012/07/08 02:27:03
    Commander Pyle
Uhm, no. Their rules are subject to change at any given moment. They also have the right to decline services to whomever they view as causing a problem with other customers, whether realistic or not.
