Some real "Pearls of Wisdom" from Thomas Sowell
Random Thoughts

Random thoughts on the passing scene:
Even
squirrels know enough to store nuts, so that they will have something to
eat when food gets scarce. But the welfare state has spawned a whole
class of people who spend everything they get when times are good, and
look to others to provide for their food and other basic needs when
times turn bad.

The 14th Amendment to the Constitution prescribes
"equal protection of the laws" to all Americans. But what does that
mean, if the President of the United States can arbitrarily grant
waivers, so that A, B and C have to obey the laws but X, Y and Z do not
-- as with both ObamaCare and the immigration laws?

Two reports
came out in the same week. One was from the Pentagon, saying that, in
just a few years, Iran will be able to produce not only a nuclear bomb
but a missile capable of carrying it to the United States. The other
report said that the American Olympic team has uniforms made in China.
This latter report received far more attention, both in Congress and in
the media.

People who lament gridlock in Washington, and express
the pious hope that Democrats and Republicans would put aside their
partisan conflicts, and cooperate to help the economy recover,
implicitly assume that what the economy needs is more meddling by
politicians, which is what brought on economic disaster in the first
place. (Skeptics can read "The Housing Boom and Bust.")

Racism is
not dead, but it is on life support -- kept alive by politicians, race
hustlers and people who get a sense of superiority by denouncing others
as "racists."

One of the arguments for Medicare is that the
elderly don't want to be a burden to their children. Apparently it is
all right to be a burden to other people's children, who are paying
taxes.

Those who talk as if more people going to college is
automatically a Good Thing seldom show much interest in what actually
goes on at college -- including far less time spent by students studying
than in the past, and a proliferation of courses promoting a sense of
grievance, entitlement or advanced navel-gazing and breast-beating.

One
of the most dangerous trends of our times is making the truth socially
unacceptable, or even illegal, with "hate speech" laws. It is supposed
to be terrible, for example, to call an illegal alien an "illegal alien"
or to call an Islamic terrorist an "Islamic terrorist." When the media
refer to "undocumented" workers or to violence committed by "militants,"
who is kidding whom -- and why?

After the charismatic -- and
disastrous -- Woodrow Wilson presidency, the voters did not elect
another president in the next decade who could be considered the least
bit charismatic. Let us hope that history repeats itself.

For more
than two centuries, the U.S. military never had a public celebration of
anybody's sex life -- until the recent "gay pride" event under the
Obama administration. Here, as elsewhere, the gay political agenda is
not equality but privilege. [I have to give Dr. Sowell an "Amen" on this, it's what I've been saying for years!]

Franklin D. Roosevelt famously said,
"We have nothing to fear but fear itself." Then he proceeded to generate
fear among businesses for years on end, with both his anti-business
rhetoric and his anti-business policies. Barack Obama is repeating the
same approach and getting the same results -- namely, an agonizingly
slow economic recovery, as investors hang on to their money, instead of
risking it in a hostile political environment.

If we wake up some
morning and find some American cities in radioactive ruins, courtesy of a
nuclear Iran, nobody is going to care whether the president who lets
this happen is the first black president or the last WASP president.
But, in the meantime, many people will keep on voting for symbolism, as
if an election is a popularity contest, like choosing a college's
Homecoming Queen or Parade Marshal.

There seems to be something
"liberating" about ignorance -- especially when you don't even know
enough to realize how little you know. Thus an administration loaded
with people who have never run any business is gung-ho to tell
businesses what to do, as well as gung-ho to tell the medical profession
what to do, lenders whom to lend to, and the military how to fight
wars.

It's amazing the Donahue didn't learn a thing from this exchange and remains a dedicated "statist" today.
"When you put out a fire, what do you replace it with?"
Wow... a mouthful, that one.
Medicare is funded by payroll tax deductions for those who receive it. They did not steal that money and waste it. Republicans and Democrats did.
Iran is developing nuclear technology. We send several billion dollars in trade imbalance to our "most favored nation" China every day. They are arming our enemies.
We are in danger of another Islamic terrorist attack.
Who is allowing them to buy up all of the commercial property in this country ?
Thomas Sowell, like all other Republicans and Democrats, just addresses the obvious symptoms and not the root causes of our problems.
McWhiney addresses the settlement, heritage, herding, hospitality, pleasures, violence, morals, education, progress, worth and collision of Southern versus Northern cultures. His point is that the consequence of this culture is that what was learned by blacks and once released through Emancipation, is that what they knew how to continue living, and still continue to cling to yet today.

Even current language expressed today is rooted in the outlying areas of Ireland, Wales and Scotland by those who didn't want the oncoming imposition of southeastern British culture. They wanted to live as they chose and thus left to live in America's South where they were basically out on their own to continue living as they were accustomed. This is what blacks were exposed to and became accumstomed, now living in conflict with that culuture today. To change, required the personal discipline to pursure a higher education to step forward and outside of this clique of dependency to be responsible for oneself.
Prior to "free trade" agreements, those people in the average and lower levels could find jobs that would enable them to be middle class, support their families, support the lower class, and support the corporate elite.
The middle class has shrunk dramatically, the lower classes have expanded exponentially, and the corporate elite are getting more support than ever.
Something has to give and the middle class has nothing left to give.
What we must avoid is the increase of government jobs that already place a burden upon attempting to conduct business and reverse the government growth that Obama has burdened upon us.
Obviously, it's the beginning. We have to be worthy to others once again whom are willing to pay for the quality and reliability of our goods and services, and we must recognize to play this game, we've got to be competitive, and that includes labor, which means telling Unions they must recognize their burden, be willing to accept cuts in compensation and benefits or they can go look for jobs bulldozing vacated homes in Detroit.
Below are six ways that various economists and trade experts suggest that China is engaging in unfair trade practices:
1) China demands proprietary technology from non-Chinese firms. China recently announced a plan to force foreign manufacturers to hand over cutting-edge technology in exchange for access to the Chinese market. Under China’s so-called “indigenous innovation” program, foreign manufacturers that want access to vast swaths of China’s market are concerned they would have to enter joint ventures in which they are limited to minority stakesand share critical technologies.
2) China does little to prevent counterfeiting. China systematically ignores the manufacture and sale of counterfeit goodsof foreign products. Piracy in China costs U.S. firms billions of dollars per year in lost sales and forceU.S. manufacturers and content providers to spend money fighting Chinese piracy. 1) China demands proprietary technology from non-Chinese firms.
China’s widespread counterfeiting not only harms the business interests of foreign rights holders but also can pose a direct threat to the health and safety of consumers in the United States, China and elsewhere, from contaminated pharmaceuticals and deadly food products to substandard car parts and toxic toys.
3) China continues to support illegal subsidies for domestic industries. Despite its WTO membership, China continues to subsidize industries in direct contravention of global agreements. In December, the Obama administration initiated a WTO case contesting the subsidies China is providing to wind power firms. Wind power and other clean energy firmsare the industries of the future, and it is clear China has every intention of trying to subsidize its way to international leadership, instead of competing fairly with American firms.
4) China abets the dumping of underpriced goods. Hand in hand with its illegal subsidies, the Chinese government does nothing to prevent, and often encourages, the dumping of goods on U.S and other markets. Many Chinese exporters are state-owned enterprises whose predatory pricing practices are explicitly encouraged by government practices and policies. When caught, Chinese exporters simply find a way to circumvent those rules as well, devising schemes such ascreating bogus new companies to ship goods, falsely declaring the country of origin or mislabeling the product. The Chinese government is well aware of these schemes – exporters are not shy about advertising options on the internet – but willfully turns a blind eye.
5) China does not crack down on industrial espionage. Just this month, the U.S.government announced the prosecution of a Chinese national for stealing secrets from Dow Chemical at the behest of the Chinese government. Though China may deny it, it is hard to dispute the fact that they have certainly done little to discourage such activities. In fact, the Congressionally appointed U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, found last year that "the Chinese government has been a major beneficiary of technology acquired through industrial espionage." Much of the industrial espionage from China is done through cyber attacks.
6) Chinakeepsthe Yuan artificially weakby effectivelypeggingits currency to the dollar.. By manipulating currency exchange rates, countries can gain an unfair advantage over U.S. manufacturers by effectively lowering the price of their exports. This hurts U.S. manufacturers forced to compete at home with artificially cheap imports. Currency manipulation also imposes a direct cost on U.S. exports, making American goods sold in China more expensive and making it more difficult for U.S. exporters to compete with artificially cheap Chinese goods around the globe. This creates an unfair trade advantage, which ultimately harms manufacturers, workers, and farmers, and contributes significantly to the U.S. trade imbalance.
