The death photo of “Bloody Bill” Anderson. Already infamous due to his association with Quantrill’s Raiders and the raid on Lawrence, Kansas, following the breakup of the band, Anderson became the leader of one of the factions that emerged, and was quick to one up his former commander in reputation for butchery. He and his men were known to scalp their victims, alive or dead, and competed to see who could display the most tied to their saddle. At least part of his ruthlessness was due to the death of his sister, who had died while in custody of Union Forces in Kansas City when the ceiling of the prison collapsed. He would be killed during a skirmish with Union militiamen on October 26, 1864, and his body was put on display. Of particular note is the shirt he wears. The intricately embroidered shirt was a such a popular outfit for Confederate raiders that it quickly became known as a ‘guerilla shirt’.
