SodaHead Brief: Are Americans Afraid Of Muhammad?

Edward Barrera 2010/05/12 19:49:53
Yes, everyone is afraid of criticizing Muhammad.
No, people are just more sensitive to the Muslim faith.

The U.S. is a country that holds free speech as one of its ideals. We are supposed to protect our opponents' right to criticize that which we might spend a lifetime in defending. But that seems to stop when it comes to the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

From the nearly complete media censorship in the U.S. of Muhammad cartoons a few years ago that ignited violence throughout Europe to the latest censorship by Comedy Central of a South Park episode that had Muhammad in a bear suit, we grow faint at disturbing Islamic sensibilities.

Fortunately, others are pushing the boundaries in free speech, though they too are under assault. Lars Vilks, a Swedish artist who angered Muslims by depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a dog, was assaulted while giving a university lecture about the limits of free speech and artistic freedom. In the video below, you can hear people shouting Allahu Akbar as others go after Vilks.

Of course, there is a U.S. connection. Vilks was the target of a murder plot involving Colleen LaRose, an American woman who dubbed herself "Jihad Jane," and who now faces life in prison.

Would you care to define equal rights?

I realize that Mohammad treated females the same, whether they were 6 years old or adults, either way he took them to bed.
Please explain eqaul rights in terms of honor killings. I do not recall a male ever killed in one of these Islamic sacraments.

I think we should develop swine spray (ala pepper spray or mace) made from the essence and body fluids from only the finest high quality porcine specimens. Enough of that on the market, in the form of personal defense spray, and any concern for muslim aggression in our day to day societal comings and goings would be reduced to a bare minimum.

It could be piped in and around public spaces the same as a fire suppression system. At the first indication of radical islamic activity in a particular area, the entire vicinity is thoroughly doused with pig spit, piss and blood.

I also think that rather than waste a lot of money on bomber aircraft and the expensive armaments to outfit them, we just build an air force of crop dusters and charge them with piggy fluid. Better than napalm when you're dealing with islamo-nuts.

The Soviets had an idea pretty similar to that. Good role models, eh?
Nothing like making it absolutely obvious that you're trying to wage a holy war. Yeah, that will totally make terrorists go away.

I will support this idea only if we can also develop a spray made from the finest homosexual semen and then go around spraying people from the Westboro Baptist Church with it.

    In other words, get bent.

Just because we are not in a war with Islamites, doesn't mean that they are not i a state of war with us.

I have muslim friends, most of them are pretty cool people. When I bring up this whole muhammed thing naturally they feel offended but most don't feel it should have to be censored. So if the majority of muslims who are non violent and non extremist tolerate it then who are we peddling to ? The extremists who want to take away our freedoms with threats of violence that's who.

It only takes a violent and radical minority to control the masses....ie. media, publicity, and general thought. However, in reality, thats all it ever took.

There are no extremists in islam; Islam is itself a religion of extremes. Those who are often incorrectly referred to as Islamic extremists are actually nothing but Islamic fundamentalists.
The Muslim desire to take away our freedoms is contained in and promoted by the teachings of the Qur'an.
The word "Islam" itself means submission - as in submission to Allah as a slave of Allah.

Slavery's in the bible too, we have to remember that these books were written during different times and meant to appeal to an entirely different society with different values than ours and use our logic and empathy to determine what to take to heart and what's inhumane. Christian nations for the most part have been secular and democratic for a much longer time than muslim nations many of whom still live under fundamentalist dictatorship and as a result it makes sense that our culture will reflect a bigger emphasis on tolerance. During the crusades it was essentially the same situation as now in reverse.

Are you the Mohammadan apologist of the day?

The only thing wrong with the Crusades is that they failed to drive the Mohammadans back to Mecca. The Christians just wanted to take back what they had lost, their Holy Land. The Muslims were the first to attack the Christians.

Islam is a totalitarian system much the same as Fascism or Communism,
Actually both those systems gave you more freedom than exists in an Islamic society governed by Sharia law. Islam seeks to control your life from cradle to grave. It even tells you how to go to the bathroom. Not even Hitler or Stalin attempted that type of control. Vicky above can tell you which foot goes first when entering and leaving the bathroom. I forget which one it is.

Islam is always under a fundamental dictatorship. The only question is who is the dictator? The Saudi royal family or the Mad Mullos of Iran. Neither one is good for the world.

Why don't you give up with the Bible bit, Yes there is a lot of stuff in it, but no one is carrying it around trying to gain control of the world as is done with Islam.

Excellent point, made me think for a good while.
Having thought it over I honestly don't think we can hold the Arab barbarians of the 600's or the "civilizations" of western Europe to an ethical standard in this because the Arabs essentially didn't do anything different from any other barbarians such as the franks (french) except succeed.

And no ones trying to take over the world with the Qur'an either. Specific countries with muslim populations maybe but nowhere outside of that. And their failing against their own muslim people because of their radicalism.

Hmm... It is a little insensitive to show negative depictions of muhammad, but I think they should have the right to do so anyways. I do think muslims are getting a bit too upset about it.

Americans should stop being so islamophobic. Do most Americans actually know enough about Islam to stay so many disrespectful things, most likely not.

The Muslims that we hear about on TV are a small sect of crazy people just as there are crazy fundamentalist Christians(i.e. KKK) and the crazies in all other religions in the world.

The muslims we hear about on TV are terrorists. How many are extremists?

    1 percent? 2 percent? 5 percent?

If we only assume 1 percent are fundamentalist extremists - That's 12 million. Half a percent? 6 million. A quarter of a percent? 3 million.

Doesn't seem like a small minority to me.

Muhammad was no prophet. He was a man that could not have enough wives. Study will show you that real prophets lived without luxuries and lived for the most part in the desert and the wilderness. They only went to the city of the city to speak to the King, or warn the people, but they never dwelled in the city.

I have no more care for Muslims than I do terrorists. Any religion that demands the murder of people who do not believe as they do is not a religion at all, but a murderous cult. They can kill and terrorize and bad mouth other faiths, yet someone does it to their faith and they immediately think murder is acceptable as payback.

What do you mean proof? Don't you know about the life of the Mahound?
He was a desert war lord. He participated in 87 battles, 34 being major battles. He was a pirate, which comes from raiding camel caravans.

    Jesus led no armies.
Jesus never commanded his armies to go out and conquer the world for him.
