SodaHead Brief: Are Americans Afraid Of Muhammad?

The U.S. is a country that holds free speech as one of its ideals. We are supposed to protect our opponents' right to criticize that which we might spend a lifetime in defending. But that seems to stop when it comes to the Muslim prophet Muhammad.
From the nearly complete media censorship in the U.S. of Muhammad cartoons a few years ago that ignited violence throughout Europe to the latest censorship by Comedy Central of a South Park episode that had Muhammad in a bear suit, we grow faint at disturbing Islamic sensibilities.
Fortunately, others are pushing the boundaries in free speech, though they too are under assault. Lars Vilks, a Swedish artist who angered Muslims by depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a dog, was assaulted while giving a university lecture about the limits of free speech and artistic freedom. In the video below, you can hear people shouting Allahu Akbar as others go after Vilks.
Of course, there is a U.S. connection. Vilks was the target of a murder plot involving Colleen LaRose, an American woman who dubbed herself "Jihad Jane," and who now faces life in prison.

The Berserker 2010/05/13 00:19:36I think...

But tons of people criticize Muhammud and Islam EVERY day. I'm surprised you haven't heard, there are so many on SH! One person even told me that they think all Muslims in the US should be forced to convert, and executed if they don't. :P
I pray to God that we can stem the tide.
Nov 2010 and Nov 2012 are very important dates in our history.
Whoever we're talking about, that's sad that they only put up with (whoever "us" is, sorry that was a bit vague) because of power...
Edit: I don't think people realized he was joking. Do you really believe he wrote 'necessssary' unintentionally?
I'm scared I can't make a P R O F I T!!
I cannot afford bodyguards and 24 hour protection like some in the public arena who criticize Islam or the prophet (vbuh)*.
Therefore, I hide behind my avatar because of the hate and violence amongst Muslims and the followers of the prophet (vbuh)*.
I prefer to keep my identity secret.
*(violence be upon him)
There's more, but if you don't get the idea, then why bother.

I know you may not agree with atheism, so please ignore the references to it, but if you're interested, you could click here:
http://www.ex-muslim.org.uk/
Then click the link named "Manifesto". It makes for a brilliant read. Unlike them, I believe it the job of all people in the West to do this, not just "non-believers, atheists, and ex-Muslims".
I do not shy away from being called a “practicing Christian” because I see it as perfectly good moral guideline for my life and my actions (I find that what I want to be and project is consistent with the actual teachings of Jesus Christ , not so much the dogma of churches that claim to be speaking for Christianity) ...having said that Islam offends me not as a “Christian” but as a human being , it opposes the things I feel are “right” and oppresses people/denigrates women / segregates and promotes hate in a way that I would oppose strongly with out ever mentioning religion of any kind.
I fight “Islam” not as a Christian but as a human being with concern for the future of all the children of man....
Precisely, and I think that is a common link we should be making in this case, unlike those of that particular group that are trying to appeal to exclusively atheists, ex-Muslims and non-believers. We should be working together on this, because there is no real disagreement between us. I'm a humanist, so I'm very glad to hear you say that your concern is simply that of a human.
Well, I was "bought up as a Christian". I still maintain that my family and many others within the religion are good people and, while they know I'm an atheist, I'm just as welcomed and accepted by them as I was before. I don't think I would classify myself anti-Christian at all, so I think we could get along, Franklin. It's not often that the non-religious and the religious can have a discussion regarding religion here on Sodahead that doesn't end up terribly.
to bad,get a freaking life and come out off the 9th cantury.....
