Personally I believe the government is too big and bloated. If we can make it more efficient and effective based on the needs of the people and the Constitution, we should be okay.

I am in favor of a smarter government. Whether a government is big or small means very little to me if they're not performing the core functions of their mission well. Worry about competency first, and size second.

As a lib, prog... I'm happy to defend my big government option. It's an easy choice. although if anything conservatives are the real "big government" proponents since they historically want big government to decide who we can marry, what we can smoke and what a woman does with her girlie parts. Not to mention blank checks to military contractors, more people in prison, farm subsidies and corporate welfare.

But here's why I chose big government.

If you were to be born randomly in the world and you had a choice between a place with a big government and relatively high taxes or a place with small government and low or no taxes you'd be wise to pick the former. If you pick the latter, have fun starving or dying of malaria in a sub-saharan African or central American banana republic because that's most likely where you'll end up. Our government such as it is gives everyone a much better chance to succeed and reach their potential. Enjoy life liberty, pursuit of happiness and so on. Like conservatives ironically say, "Freedom ain't free."

Everybody says they want "smaller government" but few people really know what that means. If, for example we made child prostitution legal, that would be less government. I don't think anyone here is pro-child porn. The truth is it's n...

You View as a Lib/prob, you Prefer larger government, more regulation and services like health care to be provided by the government and a loose interpretation of the Constitution Government should tax more, spend more and provide more services (like health care). High-income earners should pay a larger percentage of their income as taxes. embryonic stem cell research. Oppose the right that everyone should be allowed to bear arms.

My view as a right winger" i Prefer smaller government, less regulation, most services to be provided by the private sector in a free market, and a literal interpretation of the Constitution.Government should tax less, spend less. Tax rate should not be higher for high-income earners.Cut taxes more on businesses to increase revenue, which builds economy support the right to bear arms, death penalty, and personal responsibility as an individual

First of all who's talking about a "loose interpretation of the constitution?" If anything liberals have a better understanding of the constitution --not the selectively read one conservatives have... where only the 2nd and 10th amendment matter and even those they (cough) ignore certain parts. I liken it to how Christians selectively read and "follow" the Bible.

Congress has the duty to tax and spend. It's in the enumerated powers. If you don't like it you can't say you're for the constitution. And if you make more income then you have benefited more from this society than someone who's made less -therefor you owe more back. It's called a progressive tax system --it's been around since ancient Greece and it works. Giving back creates more opportunities for the next people to come along and innovate and make more money. More people have a better life, can create more, buy more goods and services which trickles up and in the long run makes life better for the rich who had to pay a little more. I hope some day I have that "problem." I sure won't be whining about it like a little bitch.

When you cut their taxes it encourages them to put more in their Swiss bank accounts so the money just sits there and piles up creating no economic activity. If you don't believe me check the job growth under Clinton vs Bush. It's pretty obvious one plan worked and the other didn't.

When was the last time you heard Obama or any Democratic politician promote any law to "take away your right to bear arms?" I think it may have gone too far though, the NRA won't be happy until any nut-job can buy a machine gun at 7-11 with a grenade launcher attachment. The 2nd Amendment says, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." You wanna tell me what bubba carrying an assault rifle into a movie theater or bar has to do with a "well regulated militia?" be my guest. To use the 2nd Amendment as a reason for no gun regulation is ridiculous. The words "Well Regulated" are right in the amendment! See what I mean about "selective reading?"

Using education, the State has declared war on its people to change their behaviors, the noetic system, the economy, and society itself. It is only our sense of traditions and the glorious past and our belief it cannot happen in a country that still holds elections, that prevents our seeing that we are already dealing with totalitarinism. Except this time they hope to use education to stealthily create mindsets that will make gulags unnecessary.

Obama wants to take wealth from people using GOV power and redistribute that money to people who do not make as much.
Side note: I do not have a family income over 250K and I do not want a damn thing from the GOV.
Anyway, let's take away all the wealth from everyone and make everyone in the USA equal. Same car, same house, same amount of money in the bank.
The bottom line is that in 5 years some people will be better off and some people will be broke.
    The lesson is:
The GOV can never regulate things like people's motivation to succeed and the wise / poor decisions that some people make.
Even in Socialist societies their is disparity.
People need to start taking accountability for their own actions and stop making it sound like if they are not successful it is someone else's fault.
I guess that is hard though when, if you think this way, the guy you voted for keeps doing it.

Bigger government is an ambiguous statement. What constitutes a bigger government. or a smaller government? Smaller government is used for political propaganda by the right wing, but they never say what constitutes a smaller government plus the right wing administration always enlarges government when they hold office. Small government is just a label to make their minions crazy. But the minions never define what a smaller government is. Do they want a smaller government that we had when this country had 10 million people, compared to 311 million people that we have now?? The size government we do need is a government that is just big enough to defend us in case of war, and give us the services we need, no bigger or smaller than that!!!!

The federal government uses personal income tax receipts to provide two-thirds of welfare funds, while state and local governments provide one-third from state tax receipts. Economically speaking, welfare is categorized as transfer payments.

The largest transfer of payments (welfare) goes to Medicaid, food stamps (SNAP), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), housing vouchers, State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).

Medicaid spent the most on health care in 2011 - $228 billion for 49 million Americans. Food stamps or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) was the second largest expenditure in 2011 with $72 billion for 41 million Americans. This year, 43 million Americans are on food stamps thanks to our tanking economy under the leadership and guidance of the current administration. According to Michael Tanner, Director of Health and Welfare Studies at the Cato Institute, federal spending on welfare rose 375 percent since 1965. Total federal welfare spending rose from 2.19 to 6 percent of GDP.

It did amuse me how you left out some of the welfare. The welfare for the wealthy, and large conglomerates. Now I don't know if you did that on purpose, and was embarrassed to admit it, or you just don't feel like it is welfare when the rich get taxpayers money. One error you made was the S.S.I. Social security isn't welfare or an entitlement. It's an insurance program where employees, and employers pay into it. None of it comes out of the budget, and never has.

One reason for the rise in welfare is the rise in income inequality. The middle class workers have had there income level off in the last 32 years, while the wealthy income has gone up almost 300%. But I agree the recession has caused a lot of this rise in welfare, Where I differ with you that this recession can't all be laid at the feet of Obama. Economist said this was in the making for along time. I know this is sacrilegious to bring up W's part of this with the right wing, but it did happen before Obama came into office. So blame them both!!!!

Great spin job "Progressive" Obama Admits His Plan is Income Redistribution (Marxism) Oct 15, 2008

    http://www.ponderstorm.com/20...

More than a month ago I asked if Barack Obama’s “Robin Hood” tax plan would redistribute wealth. Based on the fact that only about 65% of Americans pay any income taxes but Obama was promising a “tax cut” to 95% of Americans I knew something was fishy. Because those numbers are mathematically impossible to compute I suspected he was calling an income redistribution scheme a “tax cut.”

My fear that such a scheme could be in the works went from speculation to reality when Obama answered a simple question from a business owner about taxes. We now have proof positive that Obama plans to take from the haves and give to the have nots. Watch Obama in his own words tell that he plans to “spread the wealth around” (about 4:45 into the video):

A large problem in government today is the increasing amount of government programs and agencies. This is where we get that national debt from. Most of these programs and agencies do nothing but eat your tax dollars up and you never get anything out of it. There are 457 federal agencies today. Many of these agencies do the same thing, if they even do anything at all. Under these 457 agencies there are even more agencies! Take for example the NIH or National Institutes of Health. Under this government agency there is 47 more agencies! Now if you take the 457 federal agencies and lets assume that each agency has 47 sub agencies like the NIH and you multiply those together you get 21, 479 agencies. On top of that there is even more agencies at the state level! Is this level of bureaucracy really needed? Should we really have to pay for these do-nothing agencies upon do-nothing agencies? Like the bridges, parking lots and sculpture parks mentioned before these agencies are eating away at the money in your pocket book. When you pay for a good such as food you are also paying for the regulations that some of these agencies impose, causing the price to raise. In a smaller government, these agencies would be drastically narrowed down and your taxes would be significantly lower.

So in the end what are the reasons for a smaller government? A smaller government puts more money in your pocket and lets you keep the money you earn, a smaller government lets you keep your privacy and keeps the government out of your life, a smaller government makes those in government work harder and a smaller government is in line with the very ideas of our founding fathers. The sole purpose of government should be to protect my inalienable freedoms listed in the Bill of Rights, not put limits on them like big government does. A smaller government leads to a more efficient government. A smaller government leads to a more free nation. We, as a nation, should be more personally responsible and accountable and with a gigantic government that is impossible. Big government is robbing you blind. I want the government out of my bedroom, out of my wallet and out of my life. One thing we must remember is that a government that is big enough to give you all you want is big enough to take it all away.

You can't know what all these government agencies do, and neither do I. So we don't know if all these agencies are necessary or not. This a big country, and the government needs to be big enough to create services for the public. You did leave out a couple of other reasons for why we have a large government. First is our defense budget. It has been going up faster then the rest of government agency budgets, much faster. It's heading toward a trillion dollars a year. That's unacceptable. Another reason is all the lobbyist something like 19000 roaming the capitol. These lobbyist are connected to to donors of congress men and women. So it isn't all the government agencies fault for a growing government!!
