Slain US ambassador Stevens a Courageous and Humble Envoy to Arabs: Should Media Show Pictures of Ambassador's Body?

Islamic supremacists murdered American Ambassador Chris Stevens in Benghazi, Libya. Ambassador Stevens risked his life to help the people of Libya form a better country, to protect their rights, to stabilize their nation, and generally improve their lives. They returned his kindness with murder and possibly torture before his death (according to recent reports.)

Pictures of Stevens' beaten and bloody body dragged by a Libya mob have circulated. It sickens me to see his body intentionally humiliated by the enemy of Western civilization. The alleged worshipers of the religion of peace brutally murdered him and want to use his corpse as propaganda in the war against our values. They want to intimidate us and undermine our values.

On the other hand, the media has the responsibility to show the truth. They have the job to inform -- not cast judgment or censor themselves too much. Showing the pictures helps Westerners know the evil that our enemy (the radical Islamic supremacists) possesses. It demonstrates the extreme measures they will use to defeat us. They do not want peace. They would not accept our surrender: only conversion to Islam or death. They seek to destroy, not build.

Should the news media show the pictures of Ambassador's Stevens' dead body? Does it help Western values? Does it hurt the dignity of Chris Stevens? The Stevens family? Does it undermine America's strength and aid the enemy?

Note: These Islamic supremacists don't represent all Muslims. We all know that. I shouldn't have to write it, but I know many Muslim sympathizers will rush to protect the good people/side of Islam before the Muslims themselves will condemn the evil radicals that murder in the name of their religion. With over 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, the good Muslims must fight the radical element. If the fringe amounted to only 1%, that would still amount to 16 million radicals.

WASHINGTONPOST.COM reports:
At the height of Libya’s civil war, Chris Stevens dashed off to the rebel stronghold of Benghazi by cargo boat to help shape an assortment of Libyan politicians and militias into the cohesive unit that would defeat Moammar Gadhafi. A year-and-a-half later, the 52-year-old ambassador died as Islamists attacked a U.S. Consulate in the same city.

except that it's none of our business; that man had his life stolen from him in a cruel and brutal fashion, and I don't think he'd want his death to bring out the lynch mob mentality that seems to lie dormant in many conservatives. beyond that, it is plain indecent and hurtful to his family to use his bloodied corpse as a pawn in political posturing. I was under the impression that we lived in a civilized society. I hope I'm not wrong about that.

Though I believe his dignity should be preserved, if at all possible, Americans need to know what really happened to him in his last moments of life and immediately after his death. These militants tortured him and mutilated his body. There are supposed to be pictures of what appear to be Steven's being raped. I've seen the picture with his pants down. If Americans KNEW what these alleged overzealous 'protestors' (as the Obama administration likes to refer to them as) actually did, they would be totally up in arms! But the MSM will NOT report any of that. I do NOT believe the CBS/AP report of 5 days ago that of Stevens had "severe asphyxia," apparently from smoke inhalation, causing stomach bleeding, but had no other injuries. (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-... The pictures show plenty of injuries! What a cover-up!

This ghastly event has nothing to do with the President's policies or practices. although i am extremely suspicious of how this stupid video went viral. I'm certain that Rove or the Kochs helped promote and bankroll it, knowing that cretins like you would blame the President. They know what a terrible candidate they have and are getting a mite desperate. People who live in a state-censored theocracy cannot comprehend the meaning and repercussions of freedom of speech.

Reporting by telling the story is different from showing gruesome pictures that humiliate his family & do not give him a dignified passing. The humiliation is exactly what these Muslims are wanting, & our left-wing liberal media plays right into their hands, again.

Too many Americans do not understand just how hostile and evil these people are.... a reminder is in order ... Ambassador Stevens was a man of goodness and kindness ... If using the raw pictures of what has been done to a man such as he... can you imagine what they are capable of doing to us... I do not believe Ambassadar Stevens would mind his pictures being used as a warning to those of us who think appeasement is the answer .. starting with our administration ...

I came dangerously close to getting my brains blown out in a remote location in Panama in 1968 by some junta punks. I would have wanted every American to know that happened to me. Full pictures on the front cover of Life magazine. I would have wanted justice. I hope America then would have not been been as chicken getting justice as America now seems to be. Right all wrongs. It is an American ideal.
Chicken diplomacy started after the Viet Nam war. Before anyone yells at me, please, please, please tell me you truly understand the way the North Vietnamese fought that war. It was beyond horrible. Ho Chi Minh and his generals were horrible...They killed politicians and teachers and their wives and their children in the night. If you didn't believe in the take over or were sympathetic to America or spoke out against these executions, you were executed. Not the way Americans fight. We learned. We were winning...until...We quit bombing the piss out of them before they stopped these executions...They "won." The world now knows how to beat us. Sustained, non-discriminatory terrorism.

If I were the family member, I would not want my loved-ones' half-naked, gruesome body projected all over the media as if that was all he was, a body. Humiliation is what these Muslims wanted when they paraded his body around like that. When we show these photos, we're just giving these evil people more of what they want. This has nothing at all to do with freedom of speech. I'm perfectly okay with the media showing the photos, if that kind of crap is all they can scrape together, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

No it doesn't have anything to do with freedom of speech. It has everything to do with freedom of the press.

This country is turning more and more like a police state every day because people are willing to give up their unalienable rights.

You stated, "No it doesn't have anything to do with freedom of speech."

Freedom of speech, press, assembly & religion are all listed in the First Amendment). Have you ever even read it? Your answer above seems to show a bit of ignorance on your part.

First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Now, where in the world did you see something I wrote that did not show respect for our military? Are you confusing me with someone else, maybe? My daughter, son-in-law, 3 nephews, & 1 niece are currently deployed overseas. Two of my 4 brothers, & 3 uncles, served in the military. My dad & two of his 7 brothers died as a result of the Korean War & WWII, respectively. My mother's twin brother died on a ship in the Pacific during WWII. I'm a Freedom Rider & member of the Tea Party, & a friend of several Navy Seal snipers. Why in the world would I insult the military? I'll wait for your answer (it better be a good one) ....

I feel the opposite from you. It's very much about preserving the dead man's dignity that we not show these photos. I couldn't care less if it's a cheap or expensive way of "inflaming hatred against Muslims". Unlike our current POTUS & his evil minions, I don't believe we should be cowering to the Muslim community, stomping out our own freedoms in order to keep poor Muslims from their having their sensitivities enraged. They couldn't care less about the sensitivities of Christians or Jews.

This is a hard question. I feel for the family and having the possibility of seeing the pictures themselves by accident. Assuming they didn’t want to see them that is. And having their peers commenting on the pictures around them might also be hard.

On the other hand, we as Americans need to be offended by this. We need to see what actually happens in their culture (at times).

Dragged through the streets? No... The Libyans carried him to the hospital, and the Libyans lost ten people defending him and the embassy. How dare you pread such misinformation to support your agendas of hate. Why are you all trying to make the Libyan people look all anti-American, and responsible for this incident?

I agree with this. For once, I actually think just maybe the media is right. Thus far, the stories all match up EXCEPT the one that was published by an unknown source on a blog. Why are we so willing to believe that those idiots are telling the truth? If the terrorists failed at their mission, which was to execute and torture Ambassador Stevens, do we believe they would admit it? It seems much more likely that they would claim victory even if it were invented.
