Markeese Warner creates a petition against Six Flags because they rejected her application to work at the amusement park because her dreadlocks are considered, "extreme."

Markeese was looking for a summer job. She was simply going to work with foods no where near rides and was quote, disturbed to find out that I couldn’t work at Six Flags because of the texture of my hair.

Locks are predominantly worn by African-American, Caribbean and African people as an expression of how our hair grows naturally. My hair is important to me and part of who I am. I’ve had locks for about five years. Being disqualified as a potential employee because of my hair made me feel defeated; as my hair is representation of my personal growth through the years. It hurts to hear major employers like Six Flags call my natural hair and texture “extreme.” Unfortunately, throughout history, many people have demonized locks.
Markeese says on her petition site.

If you believe Markeese was treated wrongly by six flags click the link below and sign Markeese's petition.

She's working with food. Dreadlocks are stereotypically (only sometimes mistakenly) considered dirty hair. Also I know from working with food with two different girls with long dreads, that it's really hard to get a hairnet over it.....

what if a person who had blonde hair could not get a job, because people mistakenly think blondes are dumb. would that be fair or foul? i think blonde hair looks dirty and it conveys a message of dumbness.

I have known several people (friends even) with dreads and they stink and look dirty. I think I have honestly only seen a couple of people in my life who had dreads and kept them clean and neat looking but most of the time, they look like a rat's nest. IDK if the girl in the story hair is kept clean and neat or not and my opinion above was based on my personal experience with people who have them.

Foul as the facts are presented here. Fair if her hair is too long to be safe around moving machinery.

*That* girl? The one in the picture? But that hairstyle looks good on her. I could understand if they were unkempt, but I know what unkempt looks like, and that is not it.

I don't like dredlocks. They look just as silly on white people. In her picture, she looks like she's wearing curls. Which should be fine. Is this a current photo or are they using an old one like they did on Trayvon so she looks like a sweet young teenager? It grosses me out when I see debris in them. How can you get them clean?! Call me old andout of it.

There must be something else going on that we don't know about because what she's wearing is not dredlocks. It's ringlets. Big difference. Those people there hire and fire a lot of people. Maybe she was creepy or something? We just don't know all the details.

Depends on whether she has dredlocks. That's the issue of this poll, not race.

Last I went, there were actual black people working there, doing all kinds of jobs, all mixed in with a nice group of friendly young people. I don't think they have a rule against black people at Six Flags.

That's not really the same thing, is it? >.> Making assumptions about her intelligence based on her appearance =/= having a physical appearance that does not match up to cleanliness standards. At my work we do not allow piercings in because they may carry germs. This is the same concept.

Its just hair, if someone wants to work in a customer facing job then they have to follow the employer guidelines. Six Flags has a right to decide what they feel is appropriate for their corporate image, that goes along with piercings, tattoos, clothing, etc,...

what if, what if,... the discussion is not about blonds or hair color, it is about dreadlocks. Six Flags and many other places have codes of conduct that include appearance and like it or not, dreadlocks have a reputation of being nasty, greasy, unwashed, and full of bugs so instead of doing individual inspections, just NO dreadlocks. If her dreadlocks are so important then I'm sure there is a carwash somewhere that wouldn't mind. Besides she can take them out when she washes her hair, then put them back in after she gets off work.

An employer has the right to expect his employees to look a certain way while on the job.

No one has a right to a job.

    Fair.

I have had jobs that require me to have a certain length haircut. I CHOSE to take the job and I CHOSE to abide by their dress code which included short hair.

I do not have a right to force someone else to employ me, do you have that right?
