Since Yahweh started off as a tribal war God why do people consider him to be the God of the universe?
The God of the Bible (Yahweh) was originally a tribal storm God or God of the Atmosphere, he was morphed with another God (el) at a later date.

"es, an impressive evolution indeed. From a tribal God of one desert tribe to the God worshiped in every hemisphere. The great mythologist Campbell has more to say about this transmogrification: "On a primitive level there is no requirement, or even possibility, that a local tribal god should be regarded as lord of the entire world. Each group has simply its own lawgiver and patron; the rest of the world - if there is such a thing - can take care of itself, under its own gods; for each people is supposed to have a divine lawgiver and patron of its own. We call such thought monalatry. And accordingly, during the first long and terrible phase of the Israelite occupation of Canaan, Yahweh was conceived simply as a tribal god more powerful than the rest.

"The next epochal phase of the biblical development occurred when the god so regarded became identified with the god-creator of the universe. No nation of all those on earth but Israel could then claim to know and worship, or to be the concern of, this one true God of all

This enduring mythical deity is obviously a product of primitive consciousness. It is obviously not the God of the cosmos, because the God of the cosmos would not be preoccupied with one race on one planet. The sects which lovingly and fearfully adopted and pushed Him, though, would logically be preoccupied as such.

I so agree with cogs..... and to top it all off, people are to BLIND to see how NASTY most of the buy-bull is. Sell your Daughter as a sex-slave? It's allowed in the bible. Stone your kids to death for being disobedient? Allowed. Total subjugation of women? Allowed.

I see VERY little that's redeeming in the bible.

Well look at the laws of this so-called God. The creation of this God had no other purpose than a political move to grow the tribe and grab power. It's a repetitive condition in religions.

Gods stopped being used to explain things centuries ago and under one God the idea of fear and intimidation in the name of God could be used for power took hold.

I blame the Egyptians for introducing monotheism to that region and the Zoroastrians for bringing in that whole "one good god vs. one evil god forever" idea. Yahweh isn't even a terribly interesting god as gods go, the dude is pretty much just a full-time jerk whose worship inspired endless division and murder.

The Gnostic Christian idea about Yawheh being an evil usurper is pretty neat though.
