Since we live in a country... a country with military, police, emergency services, roads, etc... taxes are necessary. Having everyone pay high taxes is not good for the people in general. So... there are these things that are bad for us, fun, unnecessary - even detrimental to our health... Why not tax them higher? Those who cannot afford it can choose not to do it, those who can, help pay for the benefits of living in this country.

I think that sin taxes descriminate against a certain percentage of the population. I think that if the government would like to find a viable solution they should not descriminate against people or groups of people. They should tax eveyone the same, straight across the board, this means that the government should tax income the same unlike it does now that there is a cap on the amount of income that people are taxed on. They should also tax on all groceries, they are a necessity that all people need to live. Everyone buys groceries therefore there would not be any descrimination.

I think it's a bad idea, whoever said smoking and drinking was a sin, the bible said they shall not be a drunkard and if I remember right it says nothing about drinking so most people that rely on cigs and alcohol will just resort to getting it other ways, they won't quit

Its complete bs. Its bad enough that someone who enjoys beer and cigarettes has to pay dearly. A 3.49 pack of cigarettes is now 7.10. But yeah, that's fair... right? Lets tax condoms a little extra, and you know I really enjoy anchovies on my pizza. So lets throw an extra couple dollars tax on that stuff too.

Bad idea because in a down economy we need some good old fashioned sin to keep us from going off the deep end and if we can't afford it that means more crazies without a means of escape. Just kidding!

A person needs some kind of escape from everyday problems in order to relax. You have some people who take care of their obligations and then would like to have a means of relaxing from stress and taxes are a part of the stress. Now people who do not indulge in the sins that are taxable could care less if they are taxed or not.

I must answer your question with a question:

Do you think our Founding Fathers had intended to use taxation to regulate the behavior of a free people?
    .
Taxation is to raise revenue, but taxes are somehow more palatable if they are levied as a "sin tax" in hopes people will quit smoking, drink less, etc. For this reason, sin taxes are a bad idea.
. sin tax hopes people quit smoking drink reason sin taxes

That's why I have no problem with them keeping Marijuana illegal! Keep the governments greedy hands off of it! Actually I think they should just decriminalize it like some European countries.

Maybe, because smoker's aren't going to have any money left (they probably won't be tithing it, because they have to take out a second mortgage just to by a carton of cigarettes these days).

If we tax the churches that is a violation of the separation of church and state! That is the dumbest thing I've heard! That would make us like England and that's the exact oppisite of what America was founded on.

I know it's difficult to understand, but Acorn was only one of many groups hitting the pavement to draw in new voters. Soliciting people on the street to fill out forms doesn't always meet with success; sometimes their are bogus forms filled out. Since is is against the law to throw out these suspect forms, Acorn flagged them and sent them in.

Because they followed the letter of the law and flagged suspected voter registration fraud, trolls like you run around claiming they somehow committed voter fraud, which has to do with actually showing up at the voting booths two or three times.

Sorry to ruin your clever little jab.

Those were individuals who were too lazy to collect signatures, so they forged documents. It is hardly indicative of the organization as a whole.

But who decides what the "sins" are? They could get very extreme with this.
